Diagnosis and Management of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a unique, multi-authored compendium of information regarding the complexities of clinical and genetic diagnosis, natural history, and management of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)—the most common and important of the genetic cardiovascular diseases—as well as related issues impacting the health of trained athletes. Edited by Dr. Barry J. Maron, a world authority on HCM, and with major contributions from all of the international experts in this field, this book provides a single comprehensive source of information concerning HCM. Recent advances in the field are discussed, including the importance of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, the use of implantable defibrillators for the prevention of sudden death in young people, definition of the genetic basis for HCM and its role in clinical diagnosis and risk stratification, the development of more precise strategies for assessing the level of risk for sudden death among all patients with HCM, and the evolution of invasive interventions for heart failure symptoms, such as surgical management and its alternatives (alcohol septal ablation and dual-chamber pacing). Key Features: Contributions from all experts in the field, representing diverse viewpoints regarding this heterogeneous disease and related issues in athletes Information to dispel misunderstandings regarding issues associated with HCM and cardiovascular disease in athletes The only comprehensive source of information available on the topic

The book predominantly explores the psychic histories of patients who display their transgenerational conflicts/trauma through forensic acts. It establishes the need to consider the details of patient history in understanding the patient within both the therapeutic encounter and the treatment team milieu. There are many themes of contemporary interest including gang murders, sibling jealousy, fatal eating disorder, personality disorder, and the effects of exclusion and marginalization within group and community dynamics and the global prevalence of mass murder. The author describes the collapse into dyadic thinking and enactment that prevails when the third perspective, classically represented by the father within the Oedipal dynamic, is excluded or absent. Providing detailed case studies he shows how seemingly meaningless explosions of violence or perversion are attempts to master early experiences of trauma and/or exclusion, often passed down unconsciously through the generations. Using the theories of Matte Blanco and notions of the 'critical date' the chapters give unique insight into the timing and triggers of crimes, however apparently random.

The sixteen chapters in this book form a Festschrift in honour of Henry Chakava, the distinguished Kenyan publisher. With a Forward by Tanzanian publisher Walter Bgoya , his long-time collaborator in furthering the causes of independent African publishing, the topics cover the full range of issues in which he has been central over more than forty years. His notable achievements include the first local buy-out of a British multinational publishing house, being one of the founders of African Books Collective and the African Publishers' Network, and participation in international counsels such as the Bellagio Publishing Network. Amongst the contributors are prominent Kenyan authors Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Simon Gikandi and Micere Githae Mugo; Kenyan colleagues from the book trade world; close collaborators in Uganda and Nigeria, and some international colleagues. The greatest range of the contributors are from within Africa. There are subject specific chapters on such issues as training, copyright, publishing in the digital age, and an overview of publishing at Codesria including the vexed issue of marginalisation of African language publishing.

New advances in proteomics, driven largely by developments in mass spectrometry, continue to reveal the complexity and diversity of pathogenic mechanisms among microbes that underpin infectious diseases. Therefore a new era in medical microbiology is demanding a rapid transition from current procedures to high throughput analytical systems for the diagnosis of microbial pathogens. This book covers the broad microbiological applications of proteomics and mass spectrometry. It is divided into six sections that follow the general progression in which most microbiology laboratories are approaching the subject –Transition, Tools, Preparation, Profiling by Patterns, Target Proteins, and Data Analysis.
