Excerpt from Book Review Digest The practice, inaugurated last year, of issuing the annual cumulation of the book review digest in February. Instead of in December may now be said to be established. The valuable reviews in the monthly periodicals do not, however, all appear in time to be included even under this new arrangement. Where additional criticisms of 1915 books are deemed of' sufficient importance, they will be entered in the 1916 Digest. This year has seen a change in the editorial staff. Miss Clara E. Fanning, under whose editorship the Digest has been published since 1905, left in September to take a position in the Minneapolis Public Library, and Miss Margaret Jackson, formerly with The Century Company and the New York Public Library, assumed editorial charge at that date. The descriptive notes for September were written by Justina Leavitt Wilson, who has also contributed occasional notes to other numbers during the year. The Dewey classification numbers, a new feature of the 1915 Digest, have been assigned by Miss Corinne Bacon, editor of the forthcoming Standard Catalog. Miss Bacon is one of the advisory committee appointed by the with the cordial approval of Mr. Dewey, to' make recommendations for the expansion of the Dewey classification. The Digest and the Standard Catalog will, therefore, have the benefit of the recommendations of this advisory boar d. Book Review Digest is an essential library tool that brings together book reviews on a wide range of topics, from a variety of sources. Unlike reviews on book-sale sites and the open Internet, many of the reviews are serious, academic works. This invaluable resource for literary and biographical research is essential for readers' advisory and collection development. It provides excerpts from, and citations to, reviews of adult and juvenile fiction and non-fiction. It also includes descriptive summaries of the books. Virtually every book has at least one substantial review excerpt, and most have at least two.

Astrid Lindgren, author of the famed Pippi Longstocking novels, is perhaps one of the most significant children's authors of the last half of the twentieth century. In this collection contributors consider films, music, and picturebooks relating to Lindgren, in addition to the author's reception internationally. Touching on everything from the Astrid Lindgren theme park at Vimmerby, Sweden to the hidden folk songs in Lindgren's works to the use of nostalgia in film adaptations of Lindgren's novels, this collection offers an important international and intermedial portrait of Lindgren research today.

Since World War II Americans’ attitudes towards shyness have changed. The women’s movement and the sexual revolution raised questions about communication, self-expression, intimacy, and personality, leading to new concerns about shyness. At the same time, the growth of psychotherapy and the mental health industry brought shyness to the attention of professionals who began to regard it as an illness in need of a cure. But what is shyness? How is it related to gender, race, and class identities? And what does its stigmatization say about our culture? In Shrinking Violets and Caspar Milquetoasts, Patricia McDaniel tells the story of shyness. Using popular self-help books and magazine articles she shows how prevailing attitudes toward shyness frequently work to disempower women. She draws on evidence as diverse as 1950s views of shyness as a womanly virtue to contemporary views of shyness as a barrier to intimacy to highlight how cultural standards governing shyness reproduce and maintain power differences between and among women and men.
