All Nancy ever wanted was a family—and a boyfriend; a century-old cookbook could bring her both in Caroline B. Cooney’s classic tale of family, friendship, and romance Whenever I see a good-looking boy I am impressed first and embarrassed second. . . . I start blushing as if I had written down a dozen wild fantasies about him in a diary and he had just read it . . . Sixteen-year-old Nancy Nearing lives with her mother in Virginia and daydreams about having a big family. One day, at a flea market, her mom finds a cookbook written in 1915. It turns out to be about several generations of Nearings. In the small North Carolina town of their ancestors, Nancy uncovers layer after layer of fascinating family history. But it’s a heart-stoppingly handsome tour guide who catches her attention. Nick is a high school junior who lives with his father. Their single parents aren’t all they have in common; Nick and Nancy spend hours exploring their mutual family genealogy. Suddenly, Nancy’s life is full of relatives she never knew she had. But Nick is the one she really cares about—in fact, she might be falling in love. Can she get him to see her as more than a friend?

Dr. BBQ says, "Barbecue's not just for summer anymore!" Ray Lampe is a crusader for the barbecue lifestyle and he's encouraging people in the snow-belt to shovel out the grill and smoker in winter while high fivin' his sun belt fans. Dr. BBQ's new book is a twelve month celebration of barbecue as Ray considers seasonal cuisine, tells readers how to be a wintertime barbecue chef and talks about how to celebrate a family event "barbecue style". With over 200 hundred recipes, Ray's menus center around holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas as well as Groundhog Day (a cold climate menu, if he sees his shadow, and a tropical one, if he doesn't), the opening of the Daytona 500, Elvis's Birthday and more. It's another finger lickin' book, hot off the grill from the king of 'cue, Dr. BBQ. "Lampe's voice is knowledgeable and saucy; he includes histories of each of the featured holidays, and his hilarious comments make the book fun to read."--Publishers Weekly

It includes over 250 delicious, time-tested recipes from places like the U Drop Inn, the Covered Wagon Trading Post, the Pig Hip, and the Bungalow Inn. It is also a nostalgic recreation of the Route 66 of the past, with stories from the waitresses and cooks who poured the coffee and baked the pie. Published in 1874 in Leavenworth, Kansas, during the post-Civil War charity cookbook boom, The Kansas Home Cook-Book is a fascinating, genuine example of how women during this time were able to express their political influence through sales of cookbook collections. Besides the fund-raising that the cookbook provided, this culinary collection showcases the cooking talents of local women, what was common fare during the time period, and the local community opinions and prejudices. Each recipe is individually attributed and adds to the personal tone of the collection, which includes recipes with a Midwestern influence, such as Mrs. Elvira Burr’s Strawberry Short Cake, Prairie Chicken and Buckwheat Griddle Cakes, and Mrs. C. Foster’s Breakfast Rolls. With its special historical context and authentic local recipes, The Kansas Home Cook-Book is regional book in its origins, but it has modern-day appeal throughout the country. This edition of The Kansas Home Cook-Book was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the society is a research library documenting the lives of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection comprises approximately 1,100 volumes.
