Gemmology is a text for students preparing for the Gemmological Association's Preliminary and Diploma examinations. The book is more expansive and up-to-date than the author's earlier book, Beginner's Guide to Gemmology. The book deals with the practical and theoretical sides of gemmology. Tracing the background and science of gemmology, the book covers the gem material, geological formation, and occurrence of gemstones on the earth. The composition of gemstones from the atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds comprising them is analyzed, and the relationship between chemical composition and durability of the stone is explained. The basics of crystallography is mentioned as a tool toward understanding gemmology after which cleavage, parting, and fracture are done. A gemstone's durability and hardness and how the latter influences engineering tests and the mining techniques are compared. An important test technique to identify unmounted stones is the measure of specific gravity using displacement measurement methods and hydrostatic methods. After more descriptive details are given in identification of gemstones, whether these are synthetic or simulants, through a comprehensive explanation of the materials found in these other gemstones, the fashioning, through shaping or polishing, of gemstones is explained. Emphasis is given on the critical angle in which light rays pass in different rock densities, and then the cutting styles, gemstone polishing, and grading are discussed. Students studying for the Gemmological Association's Preliminary and Diploma examinations, jewelers, lapidarists, and diamond cutters, as well as those engaged in the hobby of gemmology, will find this book helpful and full of information toward their endeavors and hobbies.

Beginner's Guide to Gemmology presents the profiles of the principal gem materials. This book discusses the interesting characteristics of gemstones as the growing consumer market jewelry resulted in increased sales of gem testing instruments. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the development of the science of gemmology. This text then explains the fundamental qualities necessary in a gem, including color, hardness, specific gravity, crystallography, refractive index, pleochroism, critical angle, luminescence, and absorption spectra. Other chapters consider the organic gem materials, including amber, ivory, coral, tortoiseshell, jet, ebony, and pearl. This book discusses as well the various methods used in the production of man-made gemstones and the commercial use in gem testing. The final chapter deals with the composition of synthetic gemstones. This book is a valuable resource for gemmologists and jewelers. Students who intend to become a qualified gemologist will also find this book extremely useful.

Until 1933, the refractometer and the microscope were the two principal tools in gem testing. Then B.W. Anderson introduced the hand spectroscope which quickly became the third vital instrument for the UK gemmologist. Anderson and his lifelong colleague, Payne, both of the world's first full-time gemmological laboratory, were the pioneers in recognizing the vast potential of the spectroscope, and The Spectroscope and Gemmology is the extensively edited, updated, and enlarged version of Anderson's original papers. The distinguished gemmologist R. Keith Mitchell undertook the editing and added of chapters on the Pye spectrophotometer and on lasers. He also reproduced new line drawings of spectra in three aspects to accommodate the prism instrument in both the British version and in that favored by American gemmologists, and in another version as seen through the diffraction grating instrument.

Gemstones is the first attempt in English to bring together the geological, mineralogical and gemmological developments that have taken place during the last thirty years. Though there have been many gemstone books published in that time, most have been concerned, understandably and rightly, with the science of gem testing and have covered that area very well. Details of the geological occurrence of many of the classic gemstones, and of nearly all those which have only recently been discovered, have been less adequately dealt with. Coverage has been restricted to a number of papers in a wide variety of geological and mineralogical journals. Gemstones hopes to get the balance right. In the preparation of the book all the journals and monographs in the field have been consulted so that the book should stand for some years as the authority to which gemmologists and others turn in the first instance. Ease of reference and depth of coverage make Gemstones both a reference book and a bench book. Acknow ledgements I am grateful to Brian Jackson of the Department of Geology, Royal Museums of Scotland who read the manuscript and painstakingly indicated places where amendment or alteration was needed. I am also grateful to the publishers of the books on which the line illustrations are based. The colour plates present in the book derive from a number of sources, which I would like to acknowledge as follows. Plates 1, 4-15 and 17 Crown copyright reserved.

Robert Webster’s highly regarded work, Practical Gemmology, first published in 1943, has been through six editions and numerous reprints and was long considered the standard work for those learning the theory and science of gemmology. This classic, on which professional gemmology courses were founded, has been entirely revised by DeeDee Cunningham to return it to its esteemed place among current gemmological education books. Re-written and expanded, this completely updated book includes new material on high-tech treatments and synthetic diamonds as well as instrumentation, theory, testing and gemstone properties. Its nineteen lessons each serve as individual lectures and it pays considerable attention to covering all the background information and theory necessary for understanding every concept central to gemmological theory. Although suitable for readers of all levels of understanding, Practical Gemmology is specifically tailored to provide the information and diagrams necessary for the successful completion of diploma examinations and is an invaluable tool for gemmology students.

'The Diamond Formula' offers the diamond industry and all interested parties a comprehensive text on synthetic diamonds, joining together the research, achievements, theories, experimental and analytical data by recognized experts in the field, while encompassing a gemmological interpretation. The book offers the average gemmologist, gemmological (or mineralogical) student, or interested party, a concise and easy to decipher overview of the synthesis of diamonds to date. Each of the elements and various topics have at some time been the subject of a lengthy and detailed text in their own right and references are used to ensure that the reader can follow up these leads. The text begins with the history of diamond synthesis, and the theories on which much of the early work was based, before discussing the principles on which the modern processes rely. The following chapters cover the advent of success, commercial applications, synthetic diamond products, producers, gemmological properties and identification of synthetic diamonds. The final section discusses briefly diamond synthesis by CVD and application for this technology. Comprehensive text for a wide market Easy to decipher overview of the synthesis of diamonds Detailed reference section for follow up work
