Er ist mit Nora Barnacle liiert und sie haben einen kleinen Sohn "Giorgio." Sie leben in Italien in einer engen Wohnung. Weil seine Frau arbeitet, muss James Joyce beim Haushalt und Babysitting helfen. Er arbeitet auch als Sprachlehrer. Ihm fehlt die Zeit fur seine literarische Arbeit. Er kann mit der Verantwortung, die er fur das Kind tragt, nicht lesen und schreiben. Diese Situation erinnert an die Wehklage Little Chandlers, wahrend er mit dem schreienden Baby im Arm ein Gedicht lesen mochte, aber er es nicht schafft. Die Hauptfigur Little Chandler" ist ein ordentlicher, bescheidener und kultivierter Mann aus mittelkleinburgerlicher Schicht in Dublin, 32 Jahre alt, ruhig und sehr schuchtern. Er arbeitet als ein Buroangestellter und ist mit "Annie" verheiratet und sie haben einen kleinen Sohn. Im Folgenden wird dieses Thema anhand der Kurzgeschichte „A little Cloud“ aufgezeigt und erläutert. In dieser Geschichte manifestiert sich das Thema der Lähmung an dem Protagonisten Thomas Chandler. Ihm gegenübergestellt wird die Figur Ignatius Gallaher, der dieser Paralyse nicht anheim gefallen ist, und in diesem Sinne Chandlers Gegenspieler ist. Des weiteren wird erklärt, was „Irische Paralyse“ bedeutet und woher sie kommt, wobei historische Gesichtspunkte einbezogen werden. Dabei wird auch der Frage auf den Grund gegangen, warum Joyce die Paralyse zu einem Hauptthema seiner Kurzgeschichten in Dubliners gemacht hat und wie er sie selbst sieht. „A little Cloud“ wurde im Jahre 1906 als eine der letzen Geschichten aus James Joyce’ Kurzgeschichtensammlung Dubliners fertig gestellt, also nachdem Joyce 1904 Dublin und Irland verlassen hatte. „A little Cloud“ steht an achter Stelle der Kurzgeschichten und bildet damit innerhalb von Dubliners den ersten Text aus dem Bereich maturity. James Joyce hat in dieser Kurzgeschichte die „Irische Paralyse“ zum Hauptthema gemacht, wofür sich im Text zahlreiche Belegen finden lassen, vor allem an der Hauptperson Thomas Chandler und in seinen Äußerungen und Gedanken. In „A little Cloud“ trifft die Hauptperson Thomas Chandler nach längerer Zeit wieder auf seinen alten Freund Ignatius Gallaher. Die Erzählung ist in drei Teile geteilt.
