Richard Serra's use of industrial materials such as steel, the unadorned grace and totemic authority of his works, and his continued renewal of themes of balance and spatial volume have redefined the possibilities of sculpture. This major publication catalogues all of Serra's sculpture of the last thirteen years, and presents an invaluable resource for students of 20th century art. Published on the occasion of Serra's exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the book presents extensive photographic documentation of Serra's site-specific sculpture, as well as important critical text and an interview with the artist. The physical and visual weight of Serra's work anchors space as well as form, using gravity, mass and volume as integral components. His art calls attention to the tectonic power and purity of form itself, and to its capacity to make space coherent.

This visually exciting book presenting a selection of signature works by European and American artists of the postwar generations, is drawn from the UBS Art Collection, one of the richest and most varied holdings of international contemporary art in the United States. The Collection was begun in 1970 by Donald B. Marron, UBS's American Chairman, a Vice Chairman and former President of the Museum, and a Trustee of the Museum since 1975. This unique publication accompanies an exhibition of 74 of these outstanding works of art, including 44 works that were a gift to the Museum in 2002. The works reproduced here include paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, and mixed-media works by a wide and varied array of important artists, including Joseph Beuys, Chuck Close, Jasper Johns, Anselm Kiefer, Brice Marden, Robert Rauschenberg, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, and others. In addition, Ann Temkin, Curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture, has interviewed 11 of these artists for the book, producing illuminating conversations about how they work, the origins of their ideas, and other topics. The artists interviewed include Vija Celmins, Damien Hirst, Susan Rothenberg, Ed Ruscha, Robert Ryman and Lorna Simpson. Finally, the book also contains an interview with Donald B. Marron by Glenn Lowry, Director of The Museum of Modern Art.

"Western's Outdoor Sculpture Collection is not only significant for its history and the individual artists' works, but also for the scope of the public and private partnerships which, over time, have achieved a balance in the controversy of "public art" versus "art in public places." This book documents outdoor art on a university campus and the changes in context at every turn of new campus construction. It has a unique perspective in that it gives equal voice to the art historian and to the artist. Not only do the artists describe their inspirations and experiences on campus, they also interject their strong opinions on the issue of creating art for the larger public."--BOOK JACKET.
