During the muscle car wars of the 1960s, Holley carburetors emerged as the carbs to have because of their easy-to-tune design, abundance of parts, and wide range of sizes. The legendary Double Pumper, the universal 600-cfm 1850 models, the Dominator, and now the Avenger have stood the test of time and are the leading carburetors in the high-performance engine market. To many enthusiasts, the operation, components, and rebuilding procedures remain a mystery. Yet, many carburetors need to be rebuilt and properly set up for a particular engine package. Veteran engine building expert and automotive author Mike Mavrigian guides you through each important stage of the rebuilding process, so you have the best operating carburetor for a particular engine and application. In addition, he explains carb identification as well as idle, mid-range and high-speed circuit operation, specialty tools, and available parts. You often need to replace gaskets, worn parts, and jets for the prevailing weather/altitude conditions or a different engine setup. Mavrigian details how to select parts then disassemble, assemble, and calibrate all of the major Holley carburetors. In an easy-to-follow step-by-step format, he shows you each critical stage for cleaning sensitive components and installing parts, including idle screws, idle air jets, primary/secondary main jets, accelerator pumps, emulsion tubes, and float bowls. He also includes the techniques for getting all of the details right so you have a smooth-running engine. Holley carburetor owners need a rebuilding guide for understanding, disassembling, selecting parts, and reassembling their carbs, so the carb then delivers exceptional acceleration, quick response, and superior fuel economy. With Holley Carburetors: How to Rebuild you can get the carb set up and performing at its best. And, if desired, you can move to advanced levels of tuning and modifying these carbs. If you're looking for the one complete book that helps you quickly and expertly rebuild your Holley and get back on the road, this book is a vital addition to your performance library.

An intimate yet frank biography of Gore Vidal, one of the most accomplished, visible and controversial American novelists and cultural figures of the past century. The product of thirty years of friendship and conversation, Jay Parini's biography probes behind the glittering surface of Vidal's colourful life to reveal the complex emotional and sexual truth underlying his celebrity-strewn life. But there is plenty of glittering surface as well - a virtual Who's Who of the American Century, from Eleanor Roosevelt on down. The life of Gore Vidal was an amazingly full one; a life of colourful incident, famous people and lasting achievements that calls out for careful evocation and examination. Through Jay Parini's eyes and words comes an accessible, entertaining story that puts the life and times of one of the great American figures of the post-war era into context, that introduces the author to a generation who didn't know him before and looks behind-the-scenes at the man and his work in frank ways never possible before his death. Parini, provided with unique access to Vidal's life and his papers, excavates buried skeletons, but never loses sight of his deep respect for Vidal and his astounding gifts.

The Takao class of Japanese heavy cruisers was approved in the 1927–31 building programme, and the 'Takao' was the first of four vessels launched between May 1930 and April 1931. These were genuinely aggressive ships, being fast, heavily armed with both guns and torpedos, and well-protected. They saw much action in the Pacific War between 1941 and 1945, but 'Takao', having survived a torpedo attack during the Leyte Gulf battle preliminaries, was sunk by a British midget submarine in Singapore Harbour. The ‘Anatomy of the Ship’ series aims to provide the finest documentation of individual ships and ship types ever published. What makes the series unique is a complete set of superbly executed line drawings, both the conventional type of plan as well as explanatory views, with fully descriptive keys. These are supported by technical details and a record of the ship’s service history.

Art Evans was a sports car racer in the 1950s on the West Coast who raced against, and became close friends with, Carroll Shelby. Their intense competition on the track became a lifelong friendship off the track. He and Shelby collaborated on many business projects over the years, including books, marketing projects, projects for the Shelby Foundation, and so on. In his later years, Shelby loved the books about his cars and similar topics, but his eyesight was failing to the point where he had difficulty reading, and really preferred the books that were heavy with photos. It was from that realization that Shelby and Evans decided to work on one last book together. They both combed through the Shelby archives and selected Shelby's favorite images from his racing career. That is almost the entirety of this book. It is packed with photos selected by Shelby himself, and the captions are quotes from Shelby's commentary on the action in the photo, as well as his memories. Unfortunately, Carroll Shelby passed away before the book was fully completed, but Evans, following Shelby's instructions, carried this final project through to completion. Filled with images that have never been seen in print, as well as images not published since the 1950s and 1960s, this final work from Shelby is a personally curated collection by the legend himself. If you are a sports car racing fan, Ford fan, Shelby fan, or any combination of the three, this book is a perfect addition to your automotive library.
