Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) has long been marginalised as a failed Victorian Romantic whose writings on Japan were poetic but inconsequential; as a person, he emerges as a one-dimensional neurotic. In this new study, based on a wealth of hitherto unpublished sources, as well as a fresh reading of Hearn's writings, Paul Murray reveals a multi-faceted character of considerable depth, intelligence and literary skill. This is a book, therefore, that will appeal on many levels. The story of Hearn's life makes fascinating reading; his fantastic journey took him from conception outside marriage on a Greek island to a protected upbringing in Dublin; from a Gothic education in England to Cincinnati in the United States where, as Paddy Hearn, he established himself as a journalist of the macabre par excellence. In New Orleans, in the 1860s, he transformed himself into Lafcadio Hearn, litterateur and a man of the South. Finally after two years in the West Indies, he spent the last fourteen years of his life in Japan - arriving in 'the land of the gods' in the spring of 1890. Although it was always to be an ambiguous relationship with his adopted country, Hearn gave to the world some of the most valuable and enduring insights into Japanese society and culture that continue to stand the test of time. For students of the Anglo-Irish tradition, a little explored strand of Hearn's heritage, this book is also essential reading, providing substantial insights into Hearn's mastery of the literary horror genre. Equally, students of Japan will want to understand, for the first time, the make-up and motivation of one of its greatest ever Western interpreters.

In this memoir, Holland E. Bynam, a retired US Army colonel and educational administrator, looks back at a life defined by beating the odds. In a series of vignettes, he recalls both those who helped him and those who failed to assist him in making his world and that of those around him richer. While his approach to telling his story may be unconventional-at times he answers the questions of fictional interviewers to enliven his story-it allows him to convey a full orchard of anecdotes, insights, truths, ideals, and present day concerns. Bynam's story is from the soul of a gifted man. It looks back at his early, military, and later educational experiences; and to his efforts in changing lives for the better. He also shares his thoughts on topics such as educational reform, the essence of Christianity, the deadliest sins, tips for success, the struggle in the Middle East, and more. "An Incredible Journey" shares excitement, insights, and secrets; seeks to energize you to chase your own dreams; and encourages debates and conversations at numerous venues.

Lafcadio Hearn's life was a fantastic journey that took him from conception outside of marriage on a Greek island to a protected upbringing in Ireland; from a Gothic education in England to Cincinnati, where as Paddy Hearn, he established himself as a journalist of the macabre "par excellence." Moving on to New Orleans in the 1860s he transformed himself into Lafcadio Hearn, "litterateur" and a man of the South. Then after two years in the West Indies, he finally reached Japan in the spring of 1890 where he spent the last fourteen years of his life and did the work for which he is now known. Although it was to always be an ambiguous relationship with his adopted country, Hearn gave to the world some of the most valuable and enduring insights into Japan which have ever appeared and which continue to stand the test of time. Through his many articles and several books, he remains one of the foremost interpreters of Japan to the West. In Paul Murray, Hearn is provided with not just with an informed and able biographer, but with one whose experiences parallel his subject's quite closely and thus give him an exceptional understanding of the extraordinary lives that Hearn lived. Murray is an Irishman, a diplomat who has served both in North America and especially in Japan. He thus uniquely brings out the Irishness of Hearn and the nature of his life: a transient observer rather than rooted participant. "Hearn carried the burden of the Wandering Irishman to the furthest extremes, dropping and picking up identities as a long distance trucker does loads." This engaging work tells a story of great intrinsic interest. It has much for those intrigued by the life and culture of Japan andalso for the many students of the Anglo-Irish literary tradition. ." . . a book that goes beyond scholarly diligence and careful research across three continents to become also a humane and oddly hopeful story for our times." --"Catholic Herald"
