‘A Moment of War’ is the magnificent conclusion to Laurie Lee’s autobiographical trilogy begun in ‘Cider with Rosie’ and ‘As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning’. It was December 1937 when the young Laurie Lee crossed the Pyrenees and walked into the bitter winter of the Spanish Civil War. With great vividness and poignancy, Lee portrays the brave defeat of youthful idealism in Auden’s ‘low dishonest decade’. Writing in the Literary Review, John Sweeney praised the memoir as, ‘A great, heart-stopping narrative of one young Englishman’s part in the war in Spain ... crafted by a poet, stamping an indelible image of the boredom, random cruelty and stupidity of war’

PrologueWhat does it mean to move on? I live in a place known as Bastion, a large walled city, built on top of a mountain. Not many people probably know that this place exists, nor do they even care. We live isolated from the rest of the world, but whether it's through choice or not, I am not sure. We are the keepers of an artifact known only as 'The Book', which was left by the cities original leader who died a long time ago. The town governed amongst his disciples now. They all control an individual guild and district of their own given to them by him, and together they run the city as a sort of council through the rules left in The Book. Many have come to call them the Seven Guild Leaders. At a certain age you can join one of the guilds, and for me, that age was three years ago. Even still, I haven't exactly had much to do with myself, not after she died. All I have done with myself is wander throughout the Rose district... one of the seven in Bastion. The place I was born, and a place I despise. I'm the only family I have left. I don't know why I am still going anymore... but, perhaps all I need is a purpose. Something to do. Perhaps it is time I joined a guild myself.

Unlike other regions around the world, several Latin American countries have managed to reduce income inequality over the last decade. Higher growth rates and growing employment, but also innovative wage policies and social programs, have contributed to reducing poverty and narrow income disparities. Yet, despite this progress, nation-states in the region demonstrate little capacity to substantially change their patterns of deeply rooted inequalities. Focusing on the limits and challenges of redistributive policies in Latin America, this volume synthesizes and updates the discussion of inequality in the region, introducing the perspective of global and transnational interdependencies. The book explores the extent to which redistributive policies have been interlinked with the provision and quality of public goods as well as with structural changes of the productive sector. Inspired by structuralist and neostructuralist thinking of Latin American economists, such as Raúl Prebisch and Celso Furtado, authors question the redistributive impact of the interplay of recent macroeconomic, fiscal and social policies, particularly under left and center-left administrations committed to greater equality. Bringing together experts in social, fiscal and macroeconomic policies to investigate the interdependent and global character of inequalities, this book will appeal to scholars of sociology, economics, development and politics with interests in Latin America, inequality and public policy.

The America that seems to be disappearing before our very eyes is, George Lipsitz argues, actually the cumulative creation of yesterday's struggles over identity, culture, and power. At a critical moment, this book offers a richly textured historical perspective on where our notions of national knowledge have come from and where they may lead. Showing how American studies has been shaped by the social movements of the 1930s, 1960s, and 1980s, Lipsitz identifies the ways in which the globalization of commerce and culture are producing radically new understandings of politics, performance, consumption, knowledge, and nostalgia.
