Tales of upheaval and confusion, longing and love in the aftermath of the Kobe earthquake. For the characters in after the quake, the Kobe earthquake is an echo from a past they buried long ago. Satsuki has spent thirty years hating one man: did her desire for revenge cause the earthquake? Miyake left his family in Kobe to make midnight bonfires on a beach hundreds of miles away. Fourteen-year-old Sala has nightmares that the Earthquake Man is trying to stuff her inside a little box. Katagiri returns home to find a giant frog in his apartment on a mission to save Tokyo from a massive burrowing worm. 'When he gets angry, he causes earthquakes,' says Frog. 'And right now he is very, very angry. 'In a dance with the delights of Murakami's imagination we experience the limitless possibilities of fiction. With these stories Murakami expands our hearts and minds yet again' The Times

We're in the land of loss, but not lamentation. Jackson's characters love and laugh, dance and argue in a way that honors their bittersweet survival. Tender emotions are much harder to achieve onstage than pathological ones; it's a pleasure to see goodne The exiles whose tales of displacement are related here may be embodied by actors, but you often feel that it's the people they are portraying who are demanding the courtesy of your attention. How can you turn away? This aura of fraught intimacy has been

The inspiration for the ... After ... is taken from the short story collection After the Quake, by Japanese author Haruki Murakami. The stories were written in response to Japan's 1995 Kobe earthquake, and each story is affected peripherally by the disaster. Translator Jay Rubin says of the collection, "The central characters in After the Quake live far from the physical devastation, which they witness only on TV or in the papers, but for each of them the massive destruction unleashed by the earth itself becomes a turning point in their lives. They are forced to confront an emptiness they have borne inside them for years." Murakami's work made me consider the concept of life and death and the purpose of our life. The rapid swings of a seismograph's ink pen reflect a mysterious shaking force that rocks the earth with uncertain changes. I want to commemorate the children who passed away during the earthquakes that happened in many places recently.

On March 11, 2011 the fourth strongest earthquake in recorded history struck Japan. Within thirty minutes a monstrous tsunami pounded her northeastern shores, reducing towns to splinters and leaving 20,000 loved ones dead or missing. Two days later, fifty miles from my family and my home, the reactors at the Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant began to explode. For the sake and safety of my two young sons there was no decision to be made. Just get them away from Fukushima. For myself, the choice was much less clear. How can I run away when so people, right down the road, are in such dire need - of food, of shelter, of the helping, caring hands of another human being? The urgency of the moment made it impossible to do both - and left me feeling capable of neither. In circumstances beyond anyone's imagination those around me quietly endured. From the eerie calm after the shaking stopped and through countless aftershocks, in the face and the aftermath of a 30-foot wall of water, in the infancy of a disaster no one could yet fathom my adoptive neighbors went to task with calm determination and immutable grace, allowing me to begin to truly understand the resilience of the Japanese spirit. And understand, for better or for worse, just what kind of man I've become. This book is dedicated to the memory of those lost and the courage of the affected who remain.

Making Sense of Japanese

Making Sense of Japanese is the fruit of one foolhardy American's thirty-year struggle to learn and teach the Language of the Infinite. Previously known as Gone Fishin', this book has brought Jay Rubin more feedback than any of his literary translations or scholarly tomes, "even if," he says, "you discount the hate mail from spin-casters and the stray gill-netter." To convey his conviction that "the Japanese language is not vague," Rubin has dared to explain how some of the most challenging Japanese grammatical forms work in terms of everyday English. Reached recently at a recuperative center in the hills north of Kyoto, Rubin declared, "I'm still pretty sure that Japanese is not vague. Or at least, it's not as vague as it used to be. Probably." The notorious "subjectless sentence" of Japanese comes under close scrutiny in Part One. A sentence can't be a sentence without a subject, so even in cases where the subject seems to be lost or hiding, the author provides the tools to help you find it. Some attention is paid as well to the rest of the sentence, known technically to grammarians as "the rest of the sentence." Part Two tackles a number of expressions that have baffled students of Japanese over the decades, and concludes with Rubin's patented technique of analyzing upside-down Japanese sentences right-side up, which, he claims, is "far more restful" than the traditional way, inside-out. "The scholar," according to the great Japanese novelist Soseki Natsume, is "one who specializes in making the comprehensible incomprehensible." Despite his best scholarly efforts, Rubin seems to have done just the opposite. Previously published in the Power Japanese series under the same title and originally as Gone Fishin' in the same series.

Shortly before the Loma Prieta earthquake devastated areas of Northern California in 1989, Risa Palm and her associates had surveyed 2,500 homeowners in the area about their perception of risk from earthquakes. After the quake they surveyed the homeowners again and found that their perception of risk had increased but that most respondents were fatalistic and continued to ignore self-protective measures; those who personally experienced damage were more likely to buy insurance. A rare opportunity to analyze behavior change directly before and after a natural disaster, this survey has implications for policy makers, insurance officials, and those concerned with risk management.
