The tale of the combat between the Storm-god and the Sea that began circulating in the early second millennium BCE was one of the most well-known ancient Near Eastern myths. Its widespread dissemination in distinct versions across disparate locations and time periods - Syria, Egypt, Anatolia, Ugarit, Mesopotamia, and Israel - calls for analysis of all the textual variants in order to determine its earliest form, geo-cultural origin, and transmission history. In undertaking this task, Noga Ayali-Darshan examines works such as the Astarte Papyrus, the Pisaisa Myth, the Songs of Hedammu and Ullikummi, the Baal Cycle, Enuma elis, and pertinent biblical texts. She interprets these and other related writings philologically according to their provenance and comparatively in the light of parallel texts. The examination of this story appearing in all the ancient Near Eastern cultures also calls for a discussion of the theology, literature, and history of these societies and the way they shaped the local versions of the myth.

When the wild geese migrate over the little pond with its pink flamingos and clipped grass, Skylar and the others watch with envy. They like their pond, but there is something elegant and brave about being a real wild goose. But they?ve never flown before, and besides, there?s never been a reason to go. Then a lost heron wants the pond geese to take him to Lost Pond, and Skylar thinks it?s time for this motley crew to spread their wings and try out the great blue yonder. Adventure awaits . . . but, as they?ll soon find out, so does great danger. At once charming and funny, full of friendship, hardship, and bravery, this is a beautifully told story about leaving home to experience the world. With delightful black-and-white illustrations, and hints of Charlotte?s Web and The Tale of Despereaux, this is a book in the tradition of fine children?s literature.

The fifth daughter in a patriarchal society, and an indigenous Bedouin in Israel, Amal came into this world fighting for her voice to be heard in a community that did not prize girls. At birth it was only her father who looked at her and said “I see hope in her face. I want to call her Amal [hope] in the hope that Allah will give us boys after her.” Five brothers were indeed to follow. Hope is a Woman’s Name is a rare look at Bedouin life from the even rarer perspective of a Bedouin girl. Amal challenged authority from birth, slowly learning where her community’s boundaries lay and how to navigate them. As a shepherd at the age of 6, Amal led her flock of sheep across the green mountains of Laqiya, her village in the Negev in southern Israel. Given such responsibility, though rarely recognition, Amal came to understand her community and forge her skills as a leader. Aged 13 and frustrated by the constraints put on her education as a girl, Amal set up literacy classes for the adult women in her village. She aimed to teach them not only how to read, but to value education itself: “I wanted them to taste an education so that they would never again deprive their daughters of one.” This was the beginning of a lifelong career initiating projects that would help create change for the Bedouin – a minority within Israel’s Palestinian minority – and for their women in particular. She established economic empowerment programmes for marginalized women, helped found an Arab-Jewish school, and created organizations to promote shared society. At every turn she had to face the challenges of tradition – as well as the prejudices of Israeli society – to create new possibilities that would allow women to empower themselves. Amal has learnt to embrace every aspect of her complicated identity – Bedouin, Arab, woman, Palestinian and Israeli citizen – to help create social change, build bridges with other communities and inspire hope. Hope is a Woman’s Name is an intimate portrayal of a little-known culture and its strengths, values, morals and boundaries. It is a rare and moving story.

Herein are 20 legends of Hawaii’s volcanoes and the demigods which occupy them. Many of these legends are about Pele who according to Polynesian myth lives in Kilauea. The story of Pele’s arrival and occupation of Kilauea can be found in the very first story, “AI-LAAU, THE FOREST EATER.” Ai-laau lived in the volcano spewing forth his fire from the great crater when Pele came to the seashore far below. On seeing Pele, Ai-laau was fearful and fled leaving the volcano to her, where until this day she digs and continues to release plumes of fire and rivers of lava. Herein you will find the legends of: Ai-Laau, The Forest Eater How Pele Came To Hawaii Pele And The Owl Ghost-God The Hills Of Pele Pele And The Chiefs Of Puna Pele's Tree Pele And Kaha-Wali Pele And Kama-Puaa Pele And The Snow-Goddess Genealogy Of The Pele Family Pele's Long Sleep Hopoe, The Dancing Stone Hiiaka's Battle With Demons How Hiiaka Found Wahine-Omao Hiiaka Catching A Ghost Hiiaka And The Seacoast Kupuas Lohiau The Annihilation Of Keoua's Army The Destruction Of Kamehameha's Fish Ponds Kapiolani And Pele We invite you to download and read this very topical edition of Legends Of Hawaii’s Volcanoes, the activity of which was just as important to the ancient, original inhabitants of Hawaii as they were to the second generation of Americans who have arrived on the islands in relatively recent times. Instead of wading through the scientific explanations for the recent volcanic activity, just maybe there is another, hitherto, unexplained reason for the eruptions, some of which also give an interesting perspective on Hawaiian history. =========== KEYWORDS/TAGS: fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, children’s stories, children’s stories, bygone era, fairydom, fairy land, classic stories, children’s bedtime stories, happy place, happiness, laughter, history, historical, Hawaii, Islands, , Pele, Hiiaka, lava, great, fire, Lohiau, beautiful, Kauai, crater, chief, goddess, forest, Kilauea, sister, power, water, volcano, journey, winds, spirit, Kama-puaa, dragons, Puna, pit, Hilo, smoke, Hopoe, clouds, fires, ferns, Kapiolani, struck, volcanic, islands, ancient, death, earth, fish, Wahine, omao, Kamehameha, lightning, mountains, Hawaiians, Pana-ewa, skirt, magic, waves, deep, leap, ocean, Kaha-wali, pig, stone, precipice, erupt, flowers, Poliahu, battle, anger, destroy, divine, river, flee, prophet, pour, native, Mauna, sleep, chant, holua, birds, evil, Na-maka-o-ka-hai, fire-goddess, dragon, Haumea, floods, lehua, king, surf, tabu, lover, ghost-gods, Oahu, Maui, Pau-o-palae, au-makuas, missionary, earthquake, sacrifice, Moo-lau, , canoe, Kane, west, kupuas, Keoua, Pii, Ku-waha-ilo, Lono-makua, Ai-laau, Kahuku, bones, Keaau, Kane-hoa-lani, Ka-moho-alii, whirlwind, traveller, guardians, Hiiaka

When a rusty metal chest is flung ashore in a storm, Magnus Fin decides to investigate. But he injures his hand on the strange box, and his sealskin starts to show through. His teacher realises that there's something very unusual about Magnus Fin -- and rumours start to spread. Deep in the ocean, the great sea god Neptune has problems of his own. Magnus Fin is the only one who can find out and restore order under the sea. But a young journalist is investigating the rumours about 'fish people'. Can Magnus Fin complete his mission before the selkie secret is revealed and his selkie family are forced to leave the bay forever?
