Small acidic protein a-lactalbumin, one of the major protein components of milk, is one of the most extensively investigated Ca2+-binding proteins, which does not belong to the EF-hand family of calcium-binding proteins. It serves as a model for studies of the mechanisms of protein stability, folding and unfolding. a-Lactalbumin acts as a regulatory subunit of galactosyltransferase in lactose synthase, which catalyses the synthesis of lactose from UDP-galactose and glucose. It represents a classical example of molten globule state at acidic pH and in its apo-form at elevated temperatures. Three-dimensional structures of several ?-lactalbumins are determined. The protein possesses a single strong Ca2+-binding site, which binds Mg2+, Mn2+, Na+, and K+ as well, and several distinct Zn2+-binding sites. The binding of cations to the Ca2+-site increases protein stability against action of heat, various denaturing agents and proteases, while the binding of Zn2+ to the Ca2+-saturated protein decreases its stability and causes its aggregation. ?-Lactalbumin interacts with membranes, proteins, peptides and low molecular weight substrates and products. These interactions are modulated by the binding of metal cations to a-lactalbumin. a-Lactalbumin forms amyloid fibrils at low pH values and some folding variants of a-lactalbumin demonstrate bactericidal activity and some of them cause apoptosis of tumour cells. Thus, ?-lactalbumin is a metal binding protein, the function of which depends on its environment: it takes part in lactose synthesis in the mammary gland and could be important for lowering the incidence of cancer and various infections in breast-fed children.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being sinful and worthless and 10 being absolutely perfect and righteous, how do you rate yourself, really? On that same scale, how does God rate you? The Alpha Series is a systematic study of all that God has done to make you a 10 and a course on how you can begin to see yourself the way God sees you. Knowing what God thinks about us gives us a choice in what we are going to believe about ourselves. Believing what God says he made us to be allows us the hope we need to cope with life. The joyful, confident expectation about our own future gives us the liberty to care about others. The Alpha Series may be used as a counseling model, a discipleship course, a faith based recovery tool, and a training curriculum. Along with the companion workbook it is suitable as basic curricula for all types of study groups and recovery programs.

This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the development, pharmacology, efficacy, and safety of the currently available TNF-alpha inhibitors. It is the first volume that summarizes this material for all available TNF-alpha inhibitors. Elevated levels of TNF-alpha have been demonstrated in Crohn's disease, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, suggesting a role for TNF-alpha in their pathogenesis. The most recent preclinical and clinical data is presented in this book.

The business world swarms with alpha males—powerhouses who take charge, produce astonishing results, and bring enormous value to their organizations. But many alphas also leave a path of destruction in their wake. Competitive, belligerent, and impatient, these hard-charging leaders can run roughshod over colleagues and employees, to the detriment of their careers and the bottom line. In Alpha Male Syndrome, Kate Ludeman and Eddie Erlandson build on their Harvard Business Review article “Coaching the Alpha Male”—sounding a wake-up call to all alphas and the companies they work for. The authors show alphas how to leverage their unique strengths while confronting their destructive “flip side risks.” They describe the distinguishing dynamics of the alpha male syndrome and identify four breeds: commanders, executors, strategists, and visionaries. By understanding each type’s nuances, alphas can transform themselves into more effective leaders. And those who work with alphas can transform nightmare work groups into collaborative dream teams. Exercises, checklists, and tips enable readers to harness the enormous power of the alpha personality while minimizing the downsides of alpha behavior.

This major contribution to modern syntactic theory elaborates a principles-and-parameters framework in which the differences and similarities among languages with respect to WH-questions can be captured. Move &α is part of an overall program, initiated by Noam Chomsky, to create a global theory in which the entire transformational component can be reduced to a single process, Move &α. Lasnik and Saito are concerned particularly with bounding requirements on movement (Subjacency) and proper government requirements on traces (The Empty Category Principle). The first two chapters present and extend the ideas proposed in the author's earlier article, "On the Nature of Proper Government." Included are detailed discussions of &γ-marking, the general rule Affect &α, and the definition of proper government, particularly as these relate to WH constructions. The next two chapters propose a modification of Chomsky's Barriers Theory on the basis of a close examination of topicalization and examine the consequences of the modified theory. The discussion extends to restrictions on possible antecedent governors and the implications for quantifier raising and NP-movement of these restrictions. Consequences for Superiority are also considered, and a modified version of this condition is proposed, as is an extension of Chomsky's Uniformity Condition. The final chapter takes up further theoretical issues and alternative approaches.Howard Lasnik is Professor and Mamoru Saito is Associate Professor, both at the University of Connecticut.

ALPHA MALE: Who They Are, How They Think, What They Want; How To Attract, Meet, Marry & Train One. In hundreds of hours of interviews Alpha Males tell in their own words exactly what attracts them to a woman, who they pursue, how they feel about the women they sleep with, what they think about women at work. You can even make an Alpha Male fall in love, propose marriage (these skills can actually be learned) and with training become a great husband. [Warning! this book is NOT politically correct; it does not agree with common thinking today re: hook-ups, dating, marriage.] Some of what Alpha Males themselves say about women, sex, and finding someone to love and commit to may astound you.

Interferon alpha-2 is a genetically engineered, highly purified pharmaceutical agent that has undergone extensive phase I and phase II clinical study in more than 1000 patients. The material has biological activity by intravenous, intramus cular and subcutaneous routes. Clinical toxicity principally involves the 'influen za like' syndrome previously seen with native interferons. Other important toxi cities include anorexia, hepatitis, confusion and myelosuppression. Tolerable doses in multiple schedules and routes of administration have been determined. Phase II clinical trials with multiple routes and schedules of administration have been performed. Significant clinical activity has been found in non Hodgkin's lymphomas (both low grade and high grade), refractory and relapsing multiple myeloma, hairy cell leukemia, Kaposi's sarcoma, with suggestions of activity in Hodgkin's disease, renal cell carcinoma, and melanoma. The studies performed to date have for the most part involved small numbers of heavily pre-treated patients. Large-scale clinical trials in some of these disea ses are now warranted in populations of patients with as little bulk disease and prior treatment as is feasible for each tumour type. This is particularly the case in . Hodgkin's disease and subcategories of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. Alterna tely, interferon alpha-2 might be used to maintain remissions induced by other modalities (i. e. , in NHL, multiple myeloma, ovarian cancer). In some advanced disease settings, combinations of interferon alpha-2 with chemotherapeutic agents should now be investigated.
