A bestseller in 1945, this book has been out of print for over thirty years Like Wescott’s extraordinary novella The Pilgrim Hawk (which Susan Sontag described in The New Yorker as belonging “among the treasures of 20th-century American literature”), Apartment in Athens concerns an unusual triangular relationship. In this story about a Greek couple in Nazi-occupied Athens who must share their living quarters with a German officer, Wescott stages an intense and unsettling drama of accommodation and rejection, resistance and compulsion—an account of political oppression and spiritual struggle that is also a parable about the costs of closeted identity.

Jewish Studies Athens. BUT BE CAREFUL THAT I DONT SOMEHOW DECEIVE YOU UNINTENTIONALLY (!!! ???) BY PROFFERRING AN ILLEGITIMATE ACCOUNTING OF THE CHILD/TOKOU. [Republic 507a] ************************************************************************************* Jerusalem. A Note from the Tanna Kamma: The laws regarding the release from vows hover in the air (having no Scriptural support). The laws of Shabbat; of the Festival Offerings; and acts of trespass; are like mountains suspended by a hair; for there are but scant Scriptural foundation for them but there are numerous halakhot for them. Civil cases; Temple services; the regulations concerning purity and contamination; and the forbidden sexual relations; all of these have true and firm Scriptural support. AND IT IS THESE {the ones with true and firm Scriptural support) WHICH ARE THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE TORAH [The last Paragraph of Chapter One of the Hagigah Mishna; found at 10a-i of the Art Scroll rendition (with some modifications). The passage is orchestrated by the Tanna Kamma.]

Professor Howard J. Wiarda, a leading academic expert on foreign policy, comparative politics, and international affairs, is the author of more than eighty books. Wiarda has traveled to many of the world's most troubled and exciting places. Now, in the more personal accounts of his global travels, he recalls his foreign research adventures, the countries visited, and the people he met and interviewed along the way. Wiarda's new four-volume set, "Exploring the World: Adventures of a Global Traveler," details his travels and foreign adventures since 2006. In these travel books, he tells the stories that lie behind the research, offers his impressions of the countries and regions he has explored, and considers how and why some have been successful and others not. Volume I in this new series tells the story of Wiarda's 2010 circumnavigation of the globe. Volume II focuses on Europe and the continued importance of European regionalism-despite the bumper stickers advertising "Europe Whole and Free." Volume III deals with Latin America and questions whether the region is really as democratic as we would like it to be. Volume IV provides Wiarda's analysis of Asia's economic miracles while also recounting his recent visits to the Persian Gulf and his assessment of modernization and development in the Islamic world. Insightful and entertaining, Wiarda's travel narratives offer commentary on important and interesting sites all over the world.

Throughout the twentieth century, the ancient city of Athens underwent a massive transformation into simple sets of apartment blocks, or polykatoikia. Today, these multifamily residential units define the city's landscape from center to periphery and house a majority of Greece's population. Yet specific circumstances and cultural patterns set Athens's transformation apart from the arrival of architectural modernity in other countries, and what has emerged in Athens is a distinctly Greek variety of modern urban development. The Public-Private House examines Athens's urban character and the apparently unlimited adaptability of polykatoikia. In the first part of the book, a photoessay offers an overall impression of Athens and its signature housing structure. The second part of the book investigates historic developments, the genuinely democratic process of urban planning in the city, and comparisons with Le Corbusier's Dom-ino system, as well as exogenous factors, such as crucial social aspects and the impact of Athens's strict building code. The concluding third part provides an illustrated analysis of Athens's most notable examples of polykatoikia and of current developments in Greece contributing to the building type's decline.

Cinema is a truly global phenomenon and screenwriters who limit their ambitions to Hollywood can unnecessarily limit their careers. This book, loaded with information on every page, provides the practical know-how for breaking into the global marketplace. It is the first book to offer specific advice on writing for screens large and small, around the world from Hollywood to New Zealand, from Europe to Russia, and for alternative American markets including Native American, regional, and experimental. The book provides valuable insider information, such as * Twenty-five percent of German television is written by Hollywood writers. Screenwriters just need to know how to reach that market. * Many countries, including those in the European Union, have script development money available—to both foreign and local talent--from government-sponsored film funds. * The Web's influence on the film industry has been profound, and here you can find out how to network through the Web. The book also lists the key Web addresses for writers. Andrew Horton, author of two acclaimed books on screenwriting, includes personal essays by accomplished screenwriters from around the world and offers insightful case studies of several films and television scripts, among them My Big Fat Greek Wedding; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; and The Sopranos. Full of endless enthusiasm for great films and great scripts, this book will be an essential resource for both aspiring writers and accomplished writers hoping to expand their horizons, improve their skills, and increase their chances for success. Includes an interview with Terry Gilliam and contributions from Bernard Gordon, writer for The Day of the Triffids and The Thin Red Line; Lew Hunter, Chair of Screenwriting at UCLA; Karen Hall, writer/producer for Judging Amy and M*A*S*H; and other screenwriters

The author describes how at the age of 20 she emigrates to one of the Greek islands, where she is employed by local families. She cleans apartments, looks after the elderly and during the tourist season gains the trust of Stavros, who reveals the secret tricks of shops - how to cheat the tax office and tourists with souvenirs. It turns out that other entrepreneurs act similarly... The girl learns the Greek traditions, customs and the fact that the island lives by its own laws created by natives centuries ago and no state official who has come here has been able to change it. It is as if no system or state jurisdiction could reach this place? The author describes the islanders and their philosophy of life, as if behind the ''curtain'', when the last tourist has left and they are again left among ''their own''. To preserve the privacy of the inhabitants and the anonymity of the island, its name has been changed.
