Arthur Kinnaird was the First Lord of Football, the most influential figure in England football in the Victorian era. He won the FA Cup five times, played for Scotland and - as Lord Kinnaird - was President of the Football Association for 33 years. His extraordinary life and his contribution to the formative years of football is told by sports historian Andy Mitchell. Kinnaird was an outstanding sportsman, who oversaw football's growth from its primitive and muddied beginnings in the 1860s through to the professional era of the 20th century when stadia were packed with thousands of fans. This book reveals his role in stories such as the birth of international football, the epic FA Cup victories with Wanderers and Old Etonians, his clashes with Darwen and Blackburn Rovers, and his selection to represent Scotland. This new edition updates and revises Arthur Kinnaird's biography which was first published in 2011. It contains new information and new images, bringing his story up to date. Andy Mitchell runs a sports history website and has written several books including First Elevens: the Birth of International Football and 1824, The World's First Foot-Ball Club. He has worked as a researcher for the FIFA World Football Museum, was a consultant to the Netflix mini-series 'The English Game' which dramatised Arthur Kinnaird's involvement in the FA Cup and football's transition from amateur pastime to professional sport.

Delve into an absorbing world of ox-bladder balls, baggy-kneed knickerbockers and outstanding moustaches, and read remarkable tales of the first ever cup final, the invention of the shinpad, the evolution of dribbling, the first own goal and a seemingly-invincible penalty-taking elephant. Other entries cover the foundation of the Football Association, the development of the Laws of the Game and the origins of football’s most popular clubs. Packed with stories, profiles and lists, this is an indispensable guide to the colourful and unusual world of 19th century football.

Arthur Kinnaird was football's first superstar. Described as 'without exception, the best player of the day', he played in nine FA Cup Finals (a record to this day), selected Scotland's first international team, and was President of the Football Association for 33 years. He was such a dominant figure that he was presented with the FA Cup in gratitude. His extraordinary life is revealed for the first time by sports historian Andy Mitchell, who has researched not just Kinnaird's crucial contribution to the formative years of football but a great deal more: he was an outstanding sportsman, a tennis blue, swimming champion, track athlete, canoeist, and even played competitive cricket in his fifties. He was a high profile figure in late Victorian society, energetic and enlightened, known as 'the busiest man in London'. A fervent evangelical, he spent his nights in the slums, teaching destitute children to read and write, and devoted much of his banking fortune to charities and religious missions. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the early development of Britain's most popular sport, and how one man led football from parkland pastime to national obsession.

The world's most popular sport, soccer, has long been celebrated as “the beautiful game” for its artistry and aesthetic appeal. Picturing the Beautiful Game: A History of Soccer in Visual Culture and Art is the first collection to examine the rich visual culture of soccer, including the fine arts, design, and mass media. Covering a range of topics related to the game's imagery, this volume investigates the ways soccer has been promoted, commemorated, and contested in visual terms. Throughout various mediums and formats-including illustrated newspapers, modern posters, and contemporary artworks-soccer has come to represent issues relating to identity, politics, and globalization. As the contributors to this collection suggest, these representations of the game reflect society and soccer's place in our collective imagination. Perspectives from a range of fields including art history, sociology, sport history, and media studies enrich the volume, affording a multifaceted visual history of the beautiful game.
