Through a series of true personal stories, experiences, and insights, Beyond Failure takes you on an emotionally filled journey from difficult beginnings, through reflections, to face your own setbacks, your own failures, and travel beyond to the realization that your own potential can be achieved and surpassed. Connie Lynne has painstakingly documented and dissected her encounters with failure, extracting the hidden lessons creating an invaluable resource regarding mistakes, setbacks and insecurities. Most of us wish we could improve things about ourselves. However, change is difficult, especially if we don't know what we want to change. Beyond Failure is a self-help reflection of possibilities filled with concise and thought-provoking, down to earth true stories and dissections about the universal affliction we call failure. From the Author: I have FELT LIKE A FAILURE most of my life. Even as a child, like many children, I felt alone in my humiliation. I didn't want to accept what, deep down, I knew to be true: That I was flawed. What exactly was I doing that kept me locked in my shameful prison? I needed to know, what I did not know. And thus, began my transformational journey. As I stumbled forward, my ignorance combined with my false assumptions and self-doubt prolonged my painful pursuit. I used the light of truth to guide me, however, this proved to be a challenge, as I will elaborate on throughout these pages. The reflection of light had to come from within me not from outside of me. I was scared. This was a new reality. My light was barely visible. I began questioning my self-imposed labels, transformation followed. What appeared to be my largest stumbling blocks were, in fact, my future stepping stones. Within the rubble of my failures I found what I was seeking. Failure was not what I thought! My journey brought me to a crossroads. I found myself at a junction where I could either continue in my futility, or change my paradigm. In my weakness, overwhelmed by the burden of my failures, I gave up. In the depths of my despair, shrouded in darkness, I surrendered. No longer could I pretend to know what I did not know. Everything around me, everything in my experience, was a reflection of what I had been focusing on. I had been the author of my own predicament. I had mistakenly smothered my own success. Freedom from failure lay before me. Liberated, I embraced my vulnerability and a miracle began to unfold. Within Beyond Failure are some of the more memorable lessons, insights, and understandings I have gained through close examination of my own personal setbacks.

In setting foot on stage, every performer risks the possiblity of failure. Indeed, the very performance of any human action is inextricable from its potential not to succeed. This inherent potential has become a key critical trope in contemporary theatre, performance studies, and scholarship around visual cultures. Beyond Failure explores what it means for our understanding not just of theatrical practice but of human social and cultural activity more broadly. The essays in this volume tackle contemporary debates around the theory and poetics of failure, suggesting that in the absence of success can be found a defiance and hopefulness that points to new ways of knowing and being in the world. Beyond Failure offers a unique and engaging approach for students and practitioners interested not only in the impact of failure on the stage, but what it means for wider social and cultural debates.

This book offers a new framework for the analysis of teaching and learning in the creative arts. It provides teachers with a vocabulary to describe what they teach and how they do this within the creative arts. Teaching and learning in this field, with its focus on the personal characteristics of the student and its insistence on intangible qualities like talent and creativity, has long resisted traditional models of pedagogy. In the brave new world of high-stakes assessment and examination-driven outcomes across the education system, this resistance has proven to be a severe weakness and driven creative arts teachers further into the margins. Instead of accepting this relegation teachers of creative arts must set out to capture the distinctiveness of their pedagogy. This book will allow teachers to transcend the opaque metaphors that proliferate in the creative arts, and instead to argue for the robustness and rigour of their practice.

Auxiliary Signal Design for Failure Detection

Many industries, such as transportation and manufacturing, use control systems to insure that parameters such as temperature or altitude behave in a desirable way over time. For example, pilots need assurance that the plane they are flying will maintain a particular heading. An integral part of control systems is a mechanism for failure detection to insure safety and reliability. This book offers an alternative failure detection approach that addresses two of the fundamental problems in the safe and efficient operation of modern control systems: failure detection--deciding when a failure has occurred--and model identification--deciding which kind of failure has occurred. Much of the work in both categories has been based on statistical methods and under the assumption that a given system was monitored passively. Campbell and Nikoukhah's book proposes an "active" multimodel approach. It calls for applying an auxiliary signal that will affect the output so that it can be used to easily determine if there has been a failure and what type of failure it is. This auxiliary signal must be kept small, and often brief in duration, in order not to interfere with system performance and to ensure timely detection of the failure. The approach is robust and uses tools from robust control theory. Unlike some approaches, it is applicable to complex systems. The authors present the theory in a rigorous and intuitive manner and provide practical algorithms for implementation of the procedures.

On March 17 1989, the Civic Tower of Pavia collapsed without apparently any warning sign, killing four people. After an experimental and analytical investigation lasted nine months, the collapse cause was found in a progressive damage dating back many years and due mainly to the heavy dead load put on top of the existing medieval tower when realising a massive bell-tower in granite. Other case histories have been collected as the collapse of the St. Marco bell-tower in Venice in 1902, of the Sancta Maria Magdalena bell-tower in 1992 in Dusseldorf, the damages of the bell-tower of the Monza Cathedral and of the Torrazzo in Cremona. Later on, in 1996 the collapse of the Noto Cathedral showed that similar progressive damages can take place in pillars of churches and cathedrals. The experimental research aimed to show the reliability of this interpretation went on and it is still continuing since 1989 and it is described in the book. After a careful interpretation of the experimental results, also based on experiences from rock mechanics and concrete, the modelling of the phenomenon for massive structures as creep behaviour of masonry was implemented. The book has the scope of helping architects and engineers to deal with the continuous damage of heavy structures and, to understand the signs of the phenomenon while proposing some modelling, but also to give guidelines for the on site investigation, monitoring and repairing of the damaged structures.
