“You should definitely read this book... What really struck me in reading Beyond These Walls was that Tony Platt had very seriously and carefully considered the contributions of social movements—feminist, queer, disability, and labor.” —Angela Davis Beyond These Walls is an ambitious and far-ranging exploration that tracks the legacy of crime and imprisonment in the United States, from the historical roots of the American criminal justice system to our modern state of over-incarceration, and offers a bold vision for a new future. Author Tony Platt, a recognized authority in the field of criminal justice, challenges the way we think about how and why millions of people are tracked, arrested, incarcerated, catalogued, and regulated in the United States. Beyond These Walls traces the disturbing history of punishment and social control, revealing how the criminal justice system attempts to enforce and justify inequalities associated with class, race, gender, and sexuality. Prisons and police departments are central to this process, but other institutions – from immigration and welfare to educational and public health agencies – are equally complicit. Platt argues that international and national politics shape perceptions of danger and determine the policies of local criminal justice agencies, while private policing and global corporations are deeply and undemocratically involved in the business of homeland security. Finally, Beyond These Walls demonstrates why efforts to reform criminal justice agencies have often expanded rather than contracted the net of social control. Drawing upon a long tradition of popular resistance, Platt concludes with a strategic vision of what it will take to achieve justice for all in this era of authoritarian disorder.

"Beyond the walls is a battle cry that mobilizes . . . The walls that surround us, protect us, and embrace us can also inhibit movement, limit understanding, restrict engagement, and diminish our relevance in the wider world. I realized that my walls, and the walls of leaders everywhere, were not only the walls of current policy, practice, procedure, and assumption but also the walls of the past--safe, familiar, and secure. This recognition was just the first of several as we worked through a process to take ourselves and our organizations beyond the walls to new levels of performance and positive changes in the lives of people." --from the Introduction by Frances Hesselbein In Leading Beyond the Walls, twenty-nine great thinkers examine leaders adept at establishing partnerships, alliances, and networks both within and outside their organizations. They address the challenge of leading in an age when the old rules and conventional boundaries no longer exist. Peter F. Drucker, Stephen R. Covey, Peter M. Senge, Jim Collins, Noel Tichy, Regina E. Herzlinger, C.K. Prahalad, and Sally Helgesen are among those who explore new ways of building relationships, new approaches to strategy and marketing, new models of employee relations, and other innovations. Their essays herald a new world where success comes to those willing to move beyond the walls of tradition and inertia. To read the first chapter from this book, click here.

Joseph Palmisano explores the interreligious significance of empathy for Jewish-Christian understanding. Drawing on the writings of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907-1972) and Edith Stein (1891-1942), he develops a phenomenological category of empathy defined as a way of ''re-membering'' oneself with the religious other.

Happily ever after. That was what we were supposed to have. Pudding cups, sandy toes and a lifetime of making each and every one of our dreams come true-that is the future I'd promised her. I could see it in my dreams, hold it in my hands, but then I watched as all of our hopes and wishes suddenly slipped through my fingers like sand. I thought the worst was behind us, but what if we'd just delayed the inevitable? They say love can overcome any obstacle. But can it survive death? The breathtaking love story of Lailah and Jude concludes in Beyond These Walls.

Beyond the Walls of Separation is an essential and easy-to-read guidebook for chaplains and volunteers working in the context of prison, and for all those who are professionally or through family links related to those in prison. The book tells the story of what life behind bars is, and how inmates experience transformation through Christian faith: People at the crisis points of their life, where they are shattered, and where little is left of what made them, may experience life as fragile and as a transparent filter for the mysterious. Yet they also may experience God's life-giving presence. Love, expressed in forgiveness--against all odds, against all merits and previous experiences--lies at the root of many stories of transformation that emerge from prison. The book guides visitors to approach inmates without condescension, with an awareness of the social dimension of power and inequality, and with sensitivity to the suffering and alienation that individual prisoners experience. The many years of prison ministry in different cultural contexts and with inmates from all nations have taught the author that Christ does not need to be brought to prison through visitors, through evangelistic events, or through Christian outreach. He is already powerfully present in prison.

There have been a number of important points in the history of Derry over the past two centuries when great changes in the life and character of the community were brought about or seemed to come within the realms of possibility. This work was written in 1965 as a thesis for Maynooth College when great changes were in the air and one of the reasons for writing was to demonstrate that profound change was possible. On the other hand there have been remarkable continuities in Derry’s history and many of the social institutions and features of life described in Derry at the middle of the 19th century were still very much in evidence at my time of writing. The overcrowded Bogside of the 1840s was again the most densely populated urban area in Western Europe in 1965. The second hand clothes sellers and the pawnbrokers were still there. Emigration remained a major feature of the Derry scene as the rising population in the city could not find local employment and many young people had to go elsewhere to find work. The railway network that Derry people had built with such determination in the mid 19th century, was about to be dismantled. It was not evident that any great new road building program would substitute for this loss. Cross channel passenger steamer services had been abandoned and the days of the boats carrying cattle and provisions from Derry port were numbered. The city had been largely cut off from its hinterland in Donegal. The shirt industry that in the mid 19th century had been the savior of women thrown out of work by the decline of the linen industry, had stood the test of time and still dominated the industrial scene in Derry in 1965. But the industry was facing increasing competition and within a short space of time was to be radically reorganised and many were to lose their jobs. While some of the worst legacies of the 19th century still remained and some of the most important creations of that period were under threat, new developments in the mid 20th century gave reason for optimism. A new educational surge was taking place, as new opportunities were opened up in secondary and grammar schools. The welfare state was also transforming the provision of health services and instituting a regime of social security that starkly contrasted with the retrograde early Victorian Poor Law reforms. The arrival of Dupont in the city opened the prospect of further beneficial industrial employment and gave a new and different impetus to the port. Above all, a new spirit of self improvement, enterprise and willingness to work together to remove obstacles to development was abroad in the city that seemed to promise a brighter future. Unfortunately this was not to be. This thesis is being published at a time of great hope for Derry and for Northern Ireland as a result of the political transformations that have lately taken place. Its message that, given the right framework, great social and economic changes can be effected by individual and collective determination and effort may still be relevant at the present time.

Good pastoral leadership is not a "by the numbers" proposition. It is a matter of heart and soul, of devoting the whole self to the vision God gives for the congregation in which one serves. Yet neither is it purely intuitive; it requires hard, careful thinking about the directions and details of the path down which God calls. When Adam Hamilton became pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, its membership consisted of himself and his family. Ten years later the church averages between five and six thousand worshipers per weekend. Throughout this remarkable period, Hamilton learned many serious lessons about both the broad visions and the specific details of pastoral leadership. Bringing a depth of analytical skills often lacking in visionary leaders, in this book he goes beyond simply telling the story of Church of the Resurrection. He shares the questions that he learned to ask about the largely unchurched population to which Church of the Resurrection has reached out. Further, he demonstrates what he learned by listening to the answers to these questions, and how doing so has made possible a number of strategically crucial decisions the church has made. One of those crucial decisions was to make more traditional forms of worship and praise the center of the congregation's life. The result is that the example of Church of the Resurrection offers pastors and church leaders (especially those in mainline denominations) the realization that they need not completely change their liturgical and theological identity in order to reach out to the unchurched. Drawing on his own experience, as well as the detailed research on the characteristics of highly successful congregations he undertook during a sabbatical leave, Hamilton offers pastors and other church leaders solid, substantive thinking on steps that congregations can take to become centers of vibrant outreach and mission. On July 4, 1987 the definitive Welcome Home events for the Vietnam veterans took place in Washington DC, aired on HBO, and included a vast number of celebrities/musical entertainers in a 5-hour+ extravaganza that Congress declared as the official Welcome Home day for the vets. The event raised consciousness about vet issues and also millions of dollars for vet causes through the associated 501(c)(3) foundation, Welcome Home, Inc. As benefit concerts go, wrote the New York Post, 'Welcome Home' was a more unified and successful event, in terms of both its music and its message, than such well-intentioned spiritual brethren as 'Live Aid' and 'Farm Aid'. Beyond The Wall covers the origins and making of the events, while capturing the essence of the Baby Boom generation and the history that marked their lives. Since my mother was the Welcome Home founder and exec producer, this work is also a very personal family tale and labor of love.

Dolores Cross got a wake-up call, literally and figuratively, at 2:00 one morning, from a man asking who she was and where she was. As she glanced at the electronic bracelet around her ankle, she made a decision to answer the question of who she was. Not just to her caller, but to all people who have given themselves to a cause, only to be accused of a crime. This timely and inspiring memoir emerged from a respected educational administrators harrowing year under house arrest. Crosss ordeal became a personal journey to find new understanding, new strength, and hope. To sustain herself, she drew upon the lessons of memories, taught by her roots, her ancestors, her family, and her personal heroes, in the face of injustice, betrayal, and relentless prosecution. In Beyond the Wall, Cross examines the external forces that pulled her down into a darkness far from everything she believed in and had accomplished. To weather the storm, she reflected on the life experiences that had motivated her to accept the presidency of a financially fragile college and the arduous climb from the abyss that followed her resignation.
