This book is intended for all who are committed to human wellbeing and who want to make our world fairer, safer and more fulfilling for everyone, especially those who are "last." It argues that to do better we need to know better. It provides evidence that what we believe we know in international development is often distorted or unbalanced by errors, myths, biases and blind spots. Undue weight has been attached to standardized methodologies such as randomized control trials, systematic reviews, and competitive bidding: these are shown to have huge transaction costs which are rarely if ever recognized in their enormity. Robert Chambers contrasts a Newtonian paradigm in which the world is seen and understood as controllable with a paradigm of complexity which recognizes that the real world of social processes and power relations is messy and unpredictable. To confront the challenges of complex and emergent realities requires a revolutionary new professionalism. This is underpinned by a new combination of canons of rigor expressed through eclectic methodological pluralism and participatory approaches which reverse and transform power relations. Promising developments include rapid innovations in participatory ICTs, participatory statistics, and the Reality Check Approach with its up-to-date and rigorously grounded insights. Fundamental to the new professionalism, in every country and context, are reflexivity, facilitation, groundtruthing, and personal mindsets, behavior, attitudes, empathy and love. Robert Chambers surveys the past world of international development, and his own past views, with an honest and critical eye, and then launches into the world of complexity with a buoyant enthusiasm. He draws on almost six decades of experience in varied roles in Africa, South Asia and elsewhere as practitioner, trainer, manager, teacher, evaluator and field researcher, also working in UNHCR and the Ford Foundation. He is a Research Associate and Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, his base for many years. Can We Know Better? is essential reading for researchers and students of development, for policy makers and evaluators, and for all those working towards the better world of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Buddha & Shakespeare recounts, in one of the more dramatic narratives that you will likely ever come across, the epic nature of both Love and War. Each of which befalls us, most often unexpectedly. It is the story, then, of our being-human, as told through the lives of two princes who come to find themselves caught up in the throes of battles that seem to have found them, as much or more than they have found those battles. One prince from the East: Siddhartha, Guatama, the Buddha-to-be. The other prince from the West: Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, heir to Elsinore. Both of these young men-children of royalty-find themselves transformed at the hands of a breath-stealing revelation. Siddhartha encounters suffering for the first time. Hamlet's world is devastated by a King's passing-and the news from his father's ghost that he has been the victim of a murderous conspiracy. Something is afoul. Something is not quite right in each of their worlds any longer. We know that this one thing holds for both princes: that the worlds these young men had once inhabited will be home for them no more. That everything they had ever known up to the moment of revelation has just been radically transformed in relation to a knowledge of things that neither of them has ever had before. How this all plays out unfolds in the pages of Buddha & Shakespeare. That nothing will be the same again. That everything has changed. That this is the exact same moment of revelation that confronts each and every one of us at some point in our lives: the impossibility of our ever going back; or pretending that we don't know what we know, and haven't seen what we have in moments of excruciating clarity.

Jesus calls Himself -the Way, - and calls to us, -Follow me.- But today it can seem this call is drowned out in a din of competing voices, or twisted by half-truths, or simply forgotten by once faithful followers. Is this call, this Way, still relevant? And what does keeping to it now look like? Keeping to the Way means joining the resistance by signing up to be a person of self-discipline and self-control, fleeing temptation, and choosing to develop in character. It means fueling the rebellion against this world and its mold by refusing to conform, subverting godless philosophies, and escaping society's gravitational pull. It means advancing the revolution of Christ by spreading His good news, righting injustices, and filling this world with love and truth one heart and mind at a time. The Way of Jesus is a good and true and beautiful, humble and wise, ancient Way that provides a sure path for us today. The invitation to follow that Way is for everyone, everywhere, every day.

Anyone who serves teenagers today knows that more and more young people are eager to make a difference in the world. When students participate in short-term missions, service, and justice causes, parents and youth leaders hope these experiences will lead to real transformation. But research shows that our efforts don’t always stick. If we truly want short-term work to translate into long-term change, leaders and students must spend more time before, during, and after service projects preparing for and processing their experiences. The sessions in this leader’s guide will help you create experiences that stick—both for the students you take and the communities you serve. This guidebook offers a host of practical and field-tested exercises for each phase of your experience, whether it’s a half-day local service project or a two-week trip overseas. Participants will engage in hands-on experiences to gain new insights about themselves, their relationship with God, their teammates, and the world we’re called to love and serve. Each of these steps is a catalyst in helping students apply what they have learned in the field to their own lives back at home. Also included are ideas to help get parents and the whole church engaged in service together. A companion student journal is also available to boost the potential for personal application throughout the journey.

With horses, we don't get a “do-over button,” as much as we'd sometimes like one. We have to live with the choices we make, even when–looking back–we know there might have been a better way to communicate, a different way to teach a new lesson, or another means to reach the desired end. In this smart, honest book chock full of valuable takeaways, gold medalist and renowned rider and coach Denny Emerson uses stories of the standout horses from his own riding career, which spans almost 70 years, to detail some of the things he wishes he'd known “then” that he knows now. With a candid willingness to share mistakes he's made over the years and clearly articulated ideas on how others can avoid them, he commits himself and those reading to finding more conscientious ways to ride, train, and work with horses. From basics like aids and equipment to more specialized subjects, such as rider fitness, emotional control, and how to determine what success with your horse really means, riders of all skill levels can gain valuable, hard-won knowledge from his bite-size lessons in life and horsemanship. Perhaps most importantly, Emerson insists that it is never, ever too late to change–for the good of the horse and for the good of oneself.

Most economists believe capitalism is a compromise with selfish human nature. As Adam Smith put it, "It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest." Capitalism works better than socialism, according to this thinking, only because we are not kind and generous enough to make socialism work. If we were saints, we would be socialists. In Why Not Capitalism?, Jason Brennan attacks this widely held belief, arguing that capitalism would remain the best system even if we were morally perfect. Even in an ideal world, private property and free markets would be the best way to promote mutual cooperation, social justice, harmony, and prosperity. Socialists seek to capture the moral high ground by showing that ideal socialism is morally superior to realistic capitalism. But, Brennan responds, ideal capitalism is superior to ideal socialism, and so capitalism beats socialism at every level. Clearly, engagingly, and at times provocatively written, Why Not Capitalism? will cause readers of all political persuasions to re-evaluate where they stand vis-à-vis economic priorities and systems—as they exist now and as they might be improved in the future.

…In this book, Keeping it Real in an Unreal World, Michael Jean Nystrom-Schut examines the reality of illusion (or the illusion of reality?). He talks about how we can come to pursue our best efforts at finding something that resembles a path through the foggy haze of an earth-dwellers life, and the fuzzy twists and turns and convolutions of existence. If our voyage is one of expectation, our reality will become just that. Its a perceptual thing; how we each perceive it is a highly individual matter. If you keep an open mind, Michael's promise is that rewards will come out of your enthusiastic reading participation. Dont assume you know anything whatsoever about real life; it goes better for us when we think of it like that. In reality, each day we start out new, and each new day presents itself with an entirely new set of illusions. In sorting out the illusions, we have the chance to make things happen in our lives. The book is presented in five sections. To begin with, in Section One the whole matter of reality and illusion is examined. The next section talks about the individual self, and what reality means to him. The third section explores reality close to home, in the lives of our mind, and with our friends and family. Section Four moves into the outer world, where a global view of reality is addressed. Finally, in the last section (Five), Michael takes on the great and perennial metaphysical questions, doing his best to apply the human notions of God and Universe to the world of the thinking self. Michael admits he is only sharing thoughts on how he narrowly see things. You will hopefully have your own spin on reality, different from everyone else in the world. Keeping it real comes in many shapes, sizes and colors. Each of us looks at it uniquely, and what you are about to experience in this book is merely one tiny sliver of reality perspective. When you are finished reading the book, it is Michael's hope that you will have given more consideration to the matter of whats real and not real for yourself. And that you will take valuable living information from it. Reality. Its a funny thing. How we negotiate our way through it goes a long ways towards whether we adapt or fail in our experiences and encounters with life. Enjoy your journey, both through the book, and through life!
