Matthew's Jesus is typically described as the humble, compassionate messiah. This 2002 book argues that this is, however, only half the story. Matthew's theologically rich quotation of Isaiah 42.1–4, traditionally considered one of the four servant songs, underscores that manifest in Jesus' powerful message and deeds, particularly his healings and inclusion of the marginalized, is the justice that was thought to accompany the arrival of the kingdom of God. The study explores modifications to the text-form of the Isaianic citations, their relationship to the surrounding context, and the rhetorical force of the final form. It argues that the quotations are bi-referential, functioning on both a narrative and theological level, and also explores the issues surrounding the troublesome 'extraneous' content. It arrives at the conclusion that this citation was central to Matthew's understanding of Jesus' life and mission. All totalled, this study offers a refreshing exploration of Matthew's high, ethical Christology.

Witnessing is the essence and purpose of the church. The concept should hence be understood in its entirety. Jesus gave the church this all important calling at His ascension because it is the heartbeat of the Father. Sadly, most people and churches have not fully understood it, making the church ineffective in its fulfillment. Witnessing is a lot more than preaching from street to street, morning cries or even mega crusades. Though these are very important in witnessing, they are perhaps just a minute part of the process. This book aims to enunciate the concept of witnessing as a process that requires the right consciousness, attitude, and sacrifice and the role of the church, individuals and groups in effective witnessing. Our Master Jesus Christ is coming back very soon. Consequently, we need to employ all necessary techniques, and tactics to witness to this world for Him. As you read this book, I pray that God will birth in you a strong passion for souls and grant you understanding into this ultimate assignment of witnessing in Jesus Name. Amen.

Unbelief finds difficulties where faith bows with adoring reverence. As I write not for skeptics, but for those who truly know Christ whose sufferings and glories Isaiah foretold, I shall pay but slight attention to the objections of those unbelieving, natural men, albeit distinguished in the world of letters and in the Christless religious circles of the day. Many professing Christians pay little or no attention to the prophetic word, but in neglecting that which formed so large a part of the Holy Scriptures, they wrong their own souls and dishonor Him who gave His Word for our edification and comfort. The real value of prophecy is that it occupies us with a Person, not merely with events. That Person is our Lord Jesus Christ who came once to suffer and is coming again to reign. Of both these advents Isaiah treats, and that In a way more plain and full than do any of the other Old Testament seers.

Edited by David Platt, Daniel L. Akin, and Tony Merida, this new commentary series, projected to be 48 volumes, takes a Christ- centered approach to expositing each book of the Bible. Rather than a verse-by-verse approach, the authors have crafted chapters that explain and apply key passages in their assigned Bible books. Readers will learn to see Christ in all aspects of Scripture, and they will be encouraged by the devotional nature of each exposition. Projected contributors to the series include notable authors such as Russell D. Moore, Al Mohler, Matt Chandler, Francis Chan, Mark Dever, and others.

You are about to enter a vision-zone of heaven descending upon the earth unveiled before Isaiah, the first of the prophets, the prophet of Zion. The book of Isaiah is an enormous collection of prophecies described as “The Vision.” It is not simply a teaching or a historical record; it is the overarching vision of the heart of God revealed to His seer-prophet. This vision spans the ages and touches every nation on earth, becoming a collective overview of all that God has planned. The prophecies are vast and their grand themes are unrivaled in all of Scripture. With panoramic insight, Isaiah preaches about the virgin birth of Christ, the Bride of Christ, and the New Jerusalem. These prophecies also present a description of the cataclysmic judgments, the survival of a holy remnant emerging in Zion, and the canopy of glory that is coming to earth. The poetic message of Isaiah is one of victory, hope, comfort, and restoration of all things. Explore the vision of a man who saw the glory of God and spoke with burning lips, for true prophetic ministry flows from this “vision” until it grows into a burden.

"Jesus spent much time explaining to his disciples what was said in all the Scripture concerning himself (Luke 24:27) and yet many Christians find it difficult to relate the Old Testament to their own life situations, or neglect its original meaning in search of a direct personal or doctrinal application. Furthermore, debate continues about how to preach the Old Testament as Christian Scripture." "David Peterson provides a model for how to do this, rooted in biblical theology, and uses it to expound and apply an important group of chapters from the prophecy of Isaiah. In their original context, and through their use by New Testament writers, these chapters provide a framework for understanding God's purposes for the world, and the central role of the Messiah in their accomplishment."--BOOK JACKET.

Dr. Whitcomb's careful exposition of this crucial prophetic passage is a valuable tool for all students of the Bible.

The Struggle to Understand Isaiah as Christian Scripture

A key emphasis of Brevard Childs's distinguished career has been to show not only that the canon of Scripture comprises both Old and New Testaments but also that the concept of "canon" includes the way the Christian church continues to wrestle in every age with the meaning of its sacred texts. In this new volume Childs uses the book of Isaiah as a case study of the church's endeavor throughout history to understand its Scriptures. In each chapter Childs focuses on a different Christian age, using the work of key figures to illustrate the church's changing views of Isaiah. After looking at the Septuagint translation, Childs examines commentaries and tractates from the patristic, Reformation, and modern periods. His review shows that despite an enormous diversity in time, culture, nationality, and audience, these works nevertheless display a "family resemblance" in their theological understandings of this central Old Testament text. Childs also reveals how the church struggled to adapt to changing social and historical conditions, often by correcting or refining traditional methodologies, while at the same time maintaining a theological stance measured by faithfulness to Jesus Christ. In an important final chapter Childs draws out some implications of his work for modern debates over the role of Scripture in the life of the church. Of great value to scholars, ministers, and students, this book will also draw general readers into the exciting theological debate currently raging in the Christian church about the faithful interpretation of Scripture.

Evangelism, though an important part of witnessing, is not the only way to witness or preach. It is perhaps one of the least ways to witness. How a witness lives can affect lives and win souls for Christ. Consciously and correctly we have preached the right things, but unconsciously and unknowingly we have preached the wrong things. We have witnessed with our words but our daily actions sometimes contradict what we preach. For example a man who preaches to his neighbor in the day and beats his wife in the night to the hearing of his neighbors, is obviously not conscious of passive witnessing. A business woman who constantly quarrels with customers does not understand how her life style can be a tool for witnessing. Our preaching is not as powerful as our living so we have to be careful how we live. This is what I refer to as passive witnessing. Passive witnessing is witnessing with how you live. It is one of the most important ways of witnessing because the witness wins souls by how he lives his life and relates to others around him. Furthermore we will study three elements of passive witnessing to give us more understanding about this important tool: . LOVE; which motivates . CHANGE; which creates a message . SUCCESS; which creates mentorship.

Isaiah 53 is one of the clearest messianic messages of the Old Testament and is often quoted in the New Testament as a prophecy of what would happen to Jesus.
