Seed radiation sources have the ability to increase longitudinal coherence, decrease saturation lengths, and improve performance of tapering, polarization control and other FEL features. Typically, seeding schemes start with a simple sinusoidal modulation, which is manipulated to provide bunching at a high harmonic of the original wavelength. In this paper, we consider seeding from sawtooth modulations. The sawtooth creates a clean phase space structure, providing a maximal bunching factor without the need for an FEL interaction. While a pure sawtooth modulation is a theoretical construct, it is possible to approach the waveform by combining two or more of the composite wavelengths. We give examples of sawtooth seeding for HGHG, EEHG and other schemes, and note that the sawtooth modulation may aid in suppression of the microbunching instability.

Energetic electromagnetic radiation finds frequent uses in science (e. g. , for expe riments in nuclear and elementary - particle physics), in technology (for materials testing), and in medicine (for medical X-rays). The most common method of genera ting such radiation is via the process of "bremsstrahlung" (a German term coined by A. Sommerfeld, meaning "braking radiation") in which a beam of electrons is direc ted into matter (e. g. , a metal target), losing energy during its collisions with the atoms and releasing this energy in the form of emitted radiation. The character of such radiation may be drastically changed by the use of a tar get with periodic structure (most commonly, a crystal target). The coherent waves emitted from individual crystal atoms interfere with each other, monochromatizing and polarizing the radiation and often increasing its intensity manifold, thereby creating a powerful radiation source of high quality for purposes of scientific and technical applications. This is true both for the well - established "coherent bremsstrahlung" process in which the interfering radiation is emitted while the electrons cross a succession of crystal planes, as well as for the more recently discovered process of "channeling radiation" (generating radiation of even higher intensity, but lower energy) in which the radiation is emitted while the electrons propagate along a crystal plane, or a crystal axis, in an oscillatory fashion.

Extreme ultraviolet radiation, also referred to as soft X-rays or XUV, offers very special optical properties. The X-UV refractive index of matter is such that normal reflection cannot take place on polished surfaces whereas beam transmission through one micrometer of almost all materials reduces to zero. Therefore, it has long been a difficult task to imagine and to implement devices designed for complex optics experiments in this wavelength range. Thanks to new sources of coherent radiation - XUV-lasers and High Order Harmonics - the use of XUV radiation, for interferometry, holography, diffractive optics, non-linear radiation-matter interaction, time-resolved study of fast and ultrafast phenomena and many other applications, including medical sciences, is ubiquitous.

Generation and Use of Coherent Transition Radiation from Short Electron Bunches

When accelerated, an electron bunch emits coherent radiation at wavelength longer than or comparable to the bunch length. The coherent radiation intensity scales with the square of the number of electron per bunch and its radiation spectrum is determined by the Fourier Transform of the electron bunch distribution squared. At the SUNSHINE (Stanford University Short Intense Electron Source) facility, electron bunches can be generated as short as[sigma][sub z]= 36[micro]m (120 femtosecond duration) and such bunches can emit coherent radiation in the far-infrared. Since a typical number for the electron population in a bunch is 10[sup 8]-10[sup 9], the coherent radiation intensity is much higher than that of incoherent radiation as well as that of a conventional far-infrared radiation source. This concentrates on coherent transition and diffraction radiation from short electron bunches as a potential high intensity far-infrared radiation source and for sub-picosecond electron bunch length measurements. Coherent transition radiation generated from a 25 MeV beam at a vacuum-metal interface is characterized. Such a high intensity radiation source allows far-infrared spectroscopy to be conducted conveniently with a Michelson interferometer and a room temperature detector. Measurements of the refractive index of silicon are described to demonstrate the possibilities of far-infrared spectroscopy using coherent transition radiation Coherent diffraction radiation, which is closely related to coherent transition radiation, can be considered as another potential FIR radiation source. Since the perturbation by the radiation generation to the electron beam is relatively small, it has the advantage of being a nondestructive radiation source.
