Two Hundred and Fifty Ways to Start an Essay about Captain Cook, No. 29: With a Non-argument that’s Actually an Argument. Captain Cook? It’s all so very complex. I’m going to sit on the fence. (Whose fence? On whose land? Dividing what from what? You only have a fence when you fear something or when you’re trying to keep something in. Or, as a renovation show on TV informed me, when you want to upgrade your street appeal.) Alice Te Punga Somerville employs her deep research and dark humour to skilfully channel her response to Cook’s global colonial legacy in this revealing and defiant BWB Text.

In early 1970's Bruce L. Cook, eldest son of David C. III, was given 16 typewritten pages by Earl Heindel. It was explained that he had acted as informal historian for the company and wanted his history to be given to a family member so it would not be lost. Now that Earl is gone and the main offices of the company have moved away from Elgin, Bruce wanted to make this history (and a few images) available to the many former employees and their families who retired and/or remained in Elgin. The text is supplemented with an index (including many employee names) and photos. Many current and former employees will enjoy Earl's treasure trove of memories.

Excerpt from More Recipes for Fifty A recipe, called to judgment, must answer three questions Is it practical? Is it economical? Is the result attractive? These questions have to be answered in the affirmative when the recipes are planned for small groups. The answers must be still more emphatic when cooking is done for half a hundred. The first book by Miss Smith has proved its rare value to the many dietitians and institution managers who have used it. The second carries the added merit of adjustment to our increased list of staples. Before the war, we were in a rut in our kitchens. We used wheat, meat, sugar, and fats thoughtlessly and monotonously. N ow, happily, cooking is lifted out of this dull routine. It has become a real adventure. On any new trail, however, we need a guide who has thoroughly explored the danger points and can guard us against them. Cooking in Other Women s Kitchens Enhanced Ebook

As African American women left the plantation economy behind, many entered domestic service in southern cities and towns. Cooking was one of the primary jobs they performed, feeding generations of white families and, in the process, profoundly shaping southern foodways and culture. In Cooking in Other Women's Kitchens: Domestic Workers in the South, 1865-1960, Rebecca Sharpless argues that, in the face of discrimination, long workdays, and low wages, African American cooks worked to assert measures of control over their own lives. As employment opportunities expanded in the twentieth century, most African American women chose to leave cooking for more lucrative and less oppressive manufacturing, clerical, or professional positions. Through letters, autobiography, and oral history, Sharpless evokes African American women's voices from slavery to the open economy, examining their lives at work and at home. The enhanced electronic version of the book includes twenty letters, photographs, first-person narratives, and other documents, each embedded in the text where it will be most meaningful. Featuring nearly 100 pages of new material, the enhanced e-book offers readers an intimate view into the lives of domestic workers, while also illuminating the journey a historian takes in uncovering these stories.

Late Classical Pottery from Ancient Corinth

In 1971, in the southwestern area of the Roman Forum of Corinth, a round-bottomed drainage channel was discovered filled with the largest deposit of pottery of the 4th century ever found in the city, as well as some coins, terracotta figurines, and metal and stone objects. This volume publishes the pottery and metal and stone objects, and includes a re-examination of the coins by Orestes Zervos. Some of the cooking ware has been subjected to neutron activation analysis, and a statistical analysis of all recovered pottery has been completed. The contents of Drain 1971-1 are important for the function of the Classical buildings in this part of Corinth, especially Buildings I and II, and for the chronology of the renovation program that included the construction of the South Stoa, which was probably not built before the last decade of the 4th century.
