Often hidden on the back roads and byways of the Granite State, country stores are an essential and beloved part of the state's character. Developed from trading posts as travelers settled throughout the state, they are recognizable for their vast array of merchandise and a fragrant blend of tobacco, spices and coffee. The country store became the center of the community, where residents could play checkers, mail letters, attend town meetings and shop. They are still fixtures in many towns today, including the Brick Country Store in Bath, considered to be the oldest in the United States, dating back to 1790; Fadden's General Store and Sugarhouse in North Woodstock, which produces award-winning maple syrup; and the Old Country Store in Moultonborough, which had its beginnings as a tavern. Historian Bruce D. Heald, PhD, chronicles New Hampshire's historic country stores and the keepers behind these unique local landmarks.

The ultimate New England store, whose catalog reaches millions of people, presents the store's first cookbook bringing us back to simpler days. The Vermont Country Store Cookbook captures both the essence of the iconic store and the soul of the Vermont way of life: a self-reliant, rich life in the slow lane. Through recipes, yarns, archival photos, and sumptuous visuals, it tells the story of five generations of Orton storekeepers, while featuring fresh-from-the-farm cooking that imbues the cuisine of the present with the best of the past. Approximately 120 updated and original family recipes evoke memories, conveying all the hominess of the catalogue, but also appeal to the modern tastes of contemporary cooks. The book also features sidebars of Vermont history and more than 200 photographs, both black-and-white archival and four-color photographs, the latter taken especially for the book.

Our lives are all drawn together as an infinite series of intersecting stories, paths that cross, divide, and double back again. Sometimes the foundations from where they begin can enslave our minds or set them free, with the only difference between destinies tied to how we see the world around us. Two runaways cross paths in a Tennessee bus station with only one ticket between them. Who has the better reason to leave town? A middle-aged man in Illinois eyes the daily grind of a young basketball player who never boards the school bus. Does he have the wherewithal to turn this life around? A family sees looters racing toward their home as they escape an Oregon wildfire. Does it matter what the thieves steal before it all burns? These and 47 more stories make up a debut collection of shorts, with each one or several easily read within a single sitting. Many of these stories have already been expanded for inclusion in a second collection and several are being considered for longer intersecting works.

This new edition of Bruce Hunt's popular guide reveals the real, old-time Florida still to be found on the back roads of the Sunshine state in little towns that lure you in with their quaintness and keep you there for a spell with their friendly occupants. The towns featured all have a population of less than 10,000. The author revisited all the towns in the book for this update. He chatted with the inhabitants to get the inside story on how things have changed—and how they haven't. He introduces each town's history, museums, galleries, antiques shops, local eateries, and anything else he could find, including fishing holes and unusual and endearing local characters. This travelogue and guidebook lets you experience the flavor of Florida's back-road burgs and provides directions, addresses, phone numbers, and websites. Illustrated with the authors photographs. Includes maps.
