Revolutionary Cuba today faces challenges and perils greater than at any time since the defeat of the US-backed 'Bay of Pigs' invasion in 1961. The Soviet Union, Cuba's main ally, is both weakened and divided, the Sandinistas are now in opposition, and remaining Communist governments are everywhere in crisis. These developments have combined with Cuba's domestic problems to place the revolution under threat. In this thorough but critical study, Janette Habel shows that, despite great achievements in public health and education, a malaise has developed in Cuban society. Detailing the arbitrary limits set upon popular participation and the absence of a properly functioning socialist democracy, she reveals a dangerous ossification of Cuba's once innovative and radical order, and a growing alienation of youth. This scrupulous account of the perils facing the Cuban revolution never forgets the appalling external pressures under which this small state labours. But it insists that only a bold new policy of revolutionary democracy offers the prospect of conserving--and building upon--the gains of the revolution.

Most books on the Cuban Missile Crisis tell the story using the memoirs of those who advised President Kennedy as he struggled to avoid World War III. This book is the only known personal account of the lead photographic reconnaissance squadron's scouting dangerous low-level operations, flying the supersonic RF-8A Crusader, during the classified Operation Blue Moon. Captain Ecker was the commanding officer of US Navy Light Photographic Squadron 62 (VFP-62, otherwise known as "Fightin' Photo†?) during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a team created for reconnaissance and aerial photography, and consulted on the movie Thirteen Days, which included dramatic scenes of his first mission over Cuba on October 23, 1962. Blue Moon over Cuba is an authoritative and complete account of the low-level reconnaissance that might be said to have helped JFK avert nuclear Armageddon.

Beyond the throngs of tourists streaming through Central Havana's broad Prado Avenue, and outside the yoke of Castro's 43-year-old Revolutionary program, there exists a parallel Cuba - a separate evolution of a people struggling to survive. With personal stories that depict a people torn between following the directives of their government and finding a way to better their lot, journalist Ben Corbett gives us the daily life of many considered outlaws by Castro's regime. But are they outlaws or rather ingenious survivors of what many Cubans consider to be a forty-year mistake, a tangle of contradictions that has resulted in a strange hybrid of American-style capitalism and a homegrown black market economy. At a time when Cuba walks precariously on the ledge between socialism and capitalism, This Is Cuba gets to the heart of this so-called outlaw culture, taking readers into the living rooms, rooftops, parks, and city streets to hear stories of frustration, hope, and survival. Updated with a new preface.

Cuba is more than just an exploration of culture, tourism and people. It's actually an excellent place to visit when it comes to historical significance from past to present, for generations to come. For instance, Cuban society is rich in influences, although Cuban customs greatly vary which is dependent on certain cultural influences. This country is in fact located in the stunning Caribbean that comprises the mainland of Cuba called Isla de la Juventud, along with other archipelagos.Havana is actually the capital of Cuba, and is known to be the largest city. On the nearby islands, you will see the Caicos Islands, Turks, and Bahamas on the northeastern part while the US is seen from the northern part of Cuba. Haiti is on the southeastern part, Jamaica and Cayman Islands on the south, and Mexico to the west. The country was also dwelled in by Amerindian clans prior to Christopher Columbus' landing in 1492. Yet, Cuba continued to serve as a settlement for Spaniards until the onset of 1898's Spanish American war. Consequently, it achieved "nominal independence" as a US colony in the year 1902. The flimsy state suffered radical politics as well as social conflict despite the efforts of the people to strengthen their democratic system. Hence, Cuba was run by Fulgencio Batista's dictatorship in 1952. Up to date, with the increasing popularity of this tourist destination in the beautiful island of the Caribbean, Cuba strives to offer a great relaxation and a vacation paradise to those who want to fulfill an ultimate escapade with the entire family. For people who love to explore the beauty of the Caribbean peninsula, this is the best place to visit for an unforgettable holiday experience.
