System Test and Diagnosis is the first book on test and diagnosis at the system level, defined as any aggregation of related elements that together form an entity of sufficient complexity for which it is impractical to treat all of the elements at the lowest level of detail. The ideas presented emphasize that it is possible to diagnose complex systems efficiently. Since the notion of system is hierarchical, these ideas are applicable to all levels. The philosophy is presented in the context of a model-based approach, using the information flow model, that focuses on the information provided by the tests rather than the functions embedded in the system. Detailed algorithms are offered for evaluating system testability, performing efficient diagnosis, verifying and validating the models, and constructing an architecture for system maintenance. Several advanced algorithms, not commonly available in existing diagnosis tools, are discussed, including reasoning with inexact or uncertain test data, breaking large problems into manageable smaller problems, diagnosing systems with time sensitive information and time dependent tests and learning from experience. The book is divided into three parts. This handbook provides an overview of major developments around diagnostic classification models (DCMs) with regard to modeling, estimation, model checking, scoring, and applications. It brings together not only the current state of the art, but also the theoretical background and models developed for diagnostic classification. The handbook also offers applications and special topics and practical guidelines how to plan and conduct research studies with the help of DCMs. Commonly used models in educational measurement and psychometrics typically assume a single latent trait or at best a small number of latent variables that are aimed at describing individual differences in observed behavior. While this allows simple rankings of test takers along one or a few dimensions, it does not provide a detailed picture of strengths and weaknesses when assessing complex cognitive skills. DCMs, on the other hand, allow the evaluation of test taker performance relative to a potentially large number of skill domains. Most diagnostic models provide a binary mastery/non-mastery classification for each of the assumed test taker attributes representing these skill domains. Attribute profiles can be used for formative decisions as well as for summative purposes, for example in a multiple cut-off procedure that requires mastery on at least a certain subset of skills. The number of DCMs discussed in the literature and applied to a variety of assessment data has been increasing over the past decades, and their appeal to researchers and practitioners alike continues to grow. These models have been used in English language assessment, international large scale assessments, and for feedback for practice exams in preparation of college admission testing, just to name a few. Nowadays, technology-based assessments provide increasingly rich data on a multitude of skills and allow collection of data with respect to multiple types of behaviors. Diagnostic models can be understood as an ideal match for these types of data collections to provide more in-depth information about test taker skills and behavioral tendencies.

The Practice of Organizational Diagnosis: Theory & Methods presents a new paradigm for examining the intergroup dynamics of organizations by combining the procedures of organizational diagnosis with the theory of embedded intergroup relations. In this volume, Alderfer explains the relevance of the paradigm concept for the present work, shows the importance of intergroup relations in the formative organization studies, reviews extant modes of organizational diagnosis, and demonstrates the limitations of interpersonal and intra-group theories. He then presents the five laws of embedded intergroup relations as a response to the problems associated with the earlier work. The unicist approach to diagnostics changed the paradigms of decision making. In the short and long run, the nature of a reality prevails over all Voluntaristic actions. The discovery of the nature of evolution set the bases for a structural change in diagnoses, including business diagnostics. Descriptive, static, causal and conceptual diagnoses define the level of possibilities depending on who is diagnosing. Unicist diagnostics is an approach used to diagnose and to prognose a reality based on the apprehension of its nature. The nature of a given reality defines the trends of that reality. In the short or long run the nature of a reality will prevail over voluntaristic drivers. Voluntaristic drivers can withhold evolution but cannot hinder it. This book is an introduction to the basics for diagnosing complex problems. Simple problems diagnoses do not require the knowledge of their structure to be secure. But complex problems cannot be solved unless their structure is known. Test and error, extreme analytics, empiric approaches and intuition are palliatives for diagnosing without knowing the structure of a fact. When problems are complex, a unicist reflection methodology is necessary to secure knowledge. Rational approaches cannot go beyond the limits of cause-effect relations. The most difficult part of unicist diagnoses is the definition of the context in which the problem is immersed. Diagnoses are secure when their conclusions have been tested. Both non-destructive and destructive tests are necessary to accept the validity of diagnoses. This book is an introduction to the unicist approach to diagnostics. Its application is universal. Its goal is not to provide specific knowledge todiagnose different types of problems, but to give an introduction to the structure of: "the nature of diagnostics."
