I wrote this book to inform and entertain people about a most misunderstood profession. I wanted to convey the fact that I am not some superhuman or a supercool character out of a movie but just some guy trying to make a living in a hard and dangerous profession.

A RECIPE FOR HILARITY. A door whore in restaurant lingo, refers to the woman who greets you upon entering a dining establishment. However, Ivy Zingara is not just any bimbo smiling behind a podium; she is the brains and passion, the very heart and soul of Sentimento a four star fine-dining restaurant. Ivy, the protagonist, possessing no prior restaurant knowledge, dives into creating a restaurant as a total novice and experiences numerous obstacles from misogynistic fire and building inspectors to vacuous employees. She hires a lunatic chef and an eccentric staff of dipsomaniacs, yet still manages to create an incredibly successful dining venue that the glitterati of New Jersey love to frequent. The Door Whore is a glimpse into the comedy, drama and everyday insanity that goes on behind the scenes in every restaurant on a daily basis.

“Someday Mija, You’ll Learn the Difference Between a Whore and a Working Woman is a memoir that turns time on its head, circling through terror and joy with eloquence and becoming its own sacrament of resistance.” —Foreword Reviews, 5-star review At eighteen, Yvonne Martinez flees brutal domestic violence and is taken in by her dying grandmother . . . who used to be a sex worker. Before she dies, her grandmother reveals family secrets and shares her uncommon wisdom. “Someday, Mija,” she tells Yvonne, “you’ll learn the difference between a whore and a working woman.” She also shares disturbing facts about their family’s history—eventually leading Yvonne to discover that her grandmother was trafficked as a child in Depression-era Utah by her own mother, Yvonne’s great-grandmother, and that she was blamed for her own rape. In the years that follow her grandmother’s passing, Yvonne gets an education and starts a family. As she heals from her own abuse by her mother and stepfather, she becomes an advocate/labor activist. Grounded in her grandmother’s dictum not to whore herself out, she learns to fight for herself and teaches others to do the same—exposing sexual harassment in the labor unions where she works and fighting corruption. Intense but ultimately uplifting, Someday Mija, You’ll Learn the Difference Between a Whore and a Working Woman is a compelling memoir in essays of transforming transgenerational trauma into resilience and post-traumatic growth.

A Dictionary of Sexual Language and Imagery in Shakespearean and Stuart Literature

Providing an alphabetical listing of sexual language and locution in 16th and 17th-century English, this book draws especially on the more immediate literary modes: the theatre, broadside ballads, newsbooks and pamphlets. The aim is to assist the reader of Shakespearean and Stuart literature to identify metaphors and elucidate meanings; and more broadly, to chart, through illustrative quotation, shifting and recurrent linguistic patterns. Linguistic habit is closely bound up with the ideas and assumptions of a period, and the figurative language of sexuality across this period is highly illuminating of socio-cultural change as well as linguistic development. Thus the entries offer as much to those concerned with social history and the history of ideas as to the reader of Shakespeare or Dryden.

Seventy-five-year-old Jim Kane's 7X ranch is right in the middle of today's border trouble. The people who come looking for work are trouble, but not a deadly threat. To Kane, the drug traffickers and the unscrupulous "coyotes" who traffic in poor people are the deadly threats to the nation.

The setting is October 1879. The stage is New Georgetown, West Virginia. A mysterious figure by the name of 'The Maker' has entered this small community and, almost immediately upon doing so, started entering the minds of the townsfolk. Townsfolk who are as curious as The Maker himself. Like Dr Umbründ, the pint-sized physician with a prodigious capacity for sin; like the three sisters in the house on the hill - one stern, one wild, one mysterious; like the tavern's semi-mythical siren, 'The Bird', who plays spellbinding music from behind a black velvet curtain, and whom no patron has ever laid eyes on; like Odell, a youth with dreams and ambitions that his craven disposition will forever prevent him from seizing; and who has spent the entirety of his erstwhile existence under the crushing heel of Clay, New Georgetown's lead cad and chief alpha male. As we enter these characters' lives, and lightly tread our way through their brains, their bedrooms, their backstories and beyond, we will see what it is they all hope for and hide - and learn just why The Maker has chosen to meet them.
