From Lexington and Gettysburg to Normandy and Iraq, wars have defined the United States. But after the guns fall silent, the army searches the lessons of past conflicts, developing the strategies, weapons, doctrines, and commanders that it hopes will guarantee future victory. Linn surveys the past assumptions--and errors--that underlie the army's many visions of warfare up to the present day.

Peer into the minds of eleven men and one woman, all Civil War reenactors, who were hypnotically regressed to the time of that war. From their lips, piece after piece of astonishing information unfolds: details about the historic period and vivid descriptions of battles, camp life, prisons, even their own deaths. The experiences bring to life the most dramatic period in American history. The author's quest to connect these memories to actual nineteenth-century people led her to cemeteries, battlefields, and historians such as Brian Pohanka, who also participated in the adventure. The book provides an overview of reincarnation research, a reader's orientation of Civil War terminology and eight pages of photographs. Updated version.

Excerpt from Echoes From the Battlefield or Southern Life During the War After a lapse of many years a retrospective mood possessed my thoughts, and for abrief period I was no longer a man but a boy full of life, and was once more playing with other children on the grounds of the old homestead, enjoying myself as only a healthy lad can; and while thus musing every scene in the grand but cruel panorama of war passed rapidly before my vision and tempted me so strongly that I could not resist the temptation to write and leave to my only child a true record of events as they occurred during that stormy period of our civil war. This is the only apology I can offer for this faulty little publication; but since it is finished, I now offer it to all who are willing to pass its imperfections by; and hope that some of its readers who were so fortunate as to escape the realities of war may by its perusal glean something of interest. And may some of the characters in it be found worthy of emulation. I have added some very beautiful poems by the best of authors, which will be found ex. The Battle of Echo CanyonBy: Roy Gonzalez In the turbulent years of the settling of the West, two great leaders are destined to meet in what is the most unique, unconventional battle of the old West. Indian Chief Eagle Beak, the great leader of a large band of Indians, crosses paths with the equally great well-known wagon train master, Chaseum Younger. Thus, the Battle of Echo Canyon is the inevitable outcome with many humorous actions taking place as the action continues. The Indians, trying vainly to save their territory, confront the wagon train settlers who are determined to do whatever it takes to reach their far away destination, California. Along with the settlers traveling to California are ten very lovely young women stars of stage and song and their equally lovely and young woman friend. As fate would have it, their presence proves to be very essential on the long trip and to the outcome of the battle. As the totally unpredictable, wacky encounters between the Indians and the Settlers continue, the convoluted manner of people, places, and things propels the saga to its very mysterious, exciting conclusion.
