Eiffel's Tower for Young People is a vivid, lively pageant of people and cultures meeting—and competing—on the world stage at the dawn of the modern era. The 1889 World's Fair was a worldwide event showcasing the cutting-edge cultural and technological accomplishments of the world's most powerful nations on the verge of a new century. France, with its long history of sophistication and cultivation and a new republican government, presented the Eiffel Tower, the world's tallest structure, crafted from eighteen thousand pieces of wrought iron and 2.5 million rivets, as a symbol of national pride and engineering superiority. The United States, with its brash, can-do spirit, full of pride in its frontier and its ingenuity, presented the rollicking Wild West show of Buffalo Bill Cody and Annie Oakley, and the marvelous new phonograph of Thomas Edison. With historical photos throughout, outsized personalities, squabbling artists, and a sprinkling of royalty, this dramatic history opens a window to a piece of the past that, in its passions and politics, is an unforgettable portrait of a unique moment in history.

The Eiffel Tower might not have been called the Eiffel Tower but the Bonickhausen Tower because its creator, Gustave Eiffel, was born Gustave Bonickhausen. It might not have been erected in Paris, since a first project had first been proposed to the city of Barcelona, which refused it, finding it both impractical and too expensive. Finally, the Eiffel Tower might not have existed at all. Although the project of Gustave Eiffel won the competition launched for the 1889 Universal Exhibition, which was to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution, the prospect of seeing a tower rising over three hundred meters high on the Champ de Mars unleashed fears and criticism.Claire Béchet's informative and entertaining essay evoking the quintessential symbol of modern France is complemented by Ronald W. Kenyon's astonishing photographs taken in directly below the Eiffel Tower. EIFFEL TOWER NIGHT will offer surprises and delights to both Parisians and visitors and will become a treasured and unique souvenir of the Lady of Iron.

It is always intriguing to hear or read what the thought process was of a particular image you like. Thus, here is my take on a group of photos I think photographers can use to learn a new technique, camera setting or mind-set for creating great images. Every picture does have a story behind it and that story along with the technical considerations to get what was desired can lead to others possibly being able to move forward with their own photographic endeavors. I myself learn more when I see an example of how to do something. As photographers, we are visual in nature and when putting the seeing alongside the how, why, and what circumstance can lead to an aha moment where you can then say “I get it. I want to go and try that for myself.” Highlights include: • Cloud Stacking • Star Trails • Fall Abstracts • Birds in Flight • Sunrise / Sunset tips and tricks • Subject position • Foreground / Background flow
