Several high-strength structures were produced by electroforming, for specific missile and aerospace applications. Several organizations have electroformed nickel with ultimate tensile strengths of 90,000 to 100,000 psi, or more. Tough (notch insensitive), 200,000-psi nickel was electroformed by one or two organizations, but additional information must be developed before such a high strength material can be electroformed consistently in a complexly shaped form. This state-ofthe-art report describes advantages and limitations of electroforming, summarizes available property data of materials, and discusses electroforming conditions that must be maintained for good control of structural properties.

The aim of this program was the investigation of possible fabrication of aluminum solar concentrators by electroforming. Since aluminum electroforming hitherto was only a laboratory scale process, the investigation was logically sub-divided into three major phases (l) determination of the basic soundness of the approach by evaluating the deposit properties from a laboratory cell; (2) scale-up of the process and build equipment to 30" diameter concentrator size; and, (3) electroform and test two 30" diameter concentrators.

The work performed, as described in this paper, has shown how by the Electroforming Process it is possible to: 1) manufacture thin shelled shapes with large re-entrant angles, and spherical shapes, to a high degree of accuracy; 2) manufacture thin shelled cylinders and cones to a high degree of accuracy and with exact duplication of specimens; 3) manufacture any specimen so that it requires no further finishing, thus eliminating stress concentrations from mechanically working the material. Electroforming is a technique used by jewellery makers as well as ceramicists and glass artists. It allows the manufacture of delicate and/or irregular shapes that would be difficult to achieve by other means, as well as repetition pieces (using moulds), which can also be difficult to make. For jewellery, electroforming means that relatively lightweight and delicate shapes can still be made rigid and strong, and that fastenings, etc., can be attached to difficult or irregular shapes. It also allows intricate details to be faithfully reproduced (coating a spider's web in gold to make jewellery, for example).
