In this study, first published in 1979, Professor Bradbrook adopts an historic approach to comedy as a social form, showing its beginnings in medieval drama, its development in various settings, the evolution of different 'kinds' or genres, and the Shakesperean synthesis. The critical comedy which emerged at the turn of the sixteenth century is associated with Ben Jonson, and he and Shakespeare are contrasted, whilst such figures round them as Lyly, Peele, Greene and Nashe in Elizabethan times, and Dekker, Heywood, Marston, Middleton, Day, Chapman and Fletcher from the Jacobean period, are related to each other.

Originally published between 1909 and 1917 under the name "Harvard Classics," this stupendous 51-volume set-a collection of the greatest writings from literature, philosophy, history, and mythology-was assembled by American academic CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT (1834-1926), Harvard University's longest-serving president. Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf. Volume XLVI features four of the masterpiece tragedies by the greatest playwright in the English language-WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (1564-1616)'s Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth, and The Tempest, all written between 1599 and 1611. Also included in this volume is Edward the Second, a 1592 drama of court intrigue, by CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE (1564-1593), who greatly influenced Shakespeare's writing and who-some speculate-may actually have penned the plays credited to Shakespeare after faking his own death and taking on an assumed name.

Although a two-volume work on Elizabethan-era drama, only the first volume is included in this Anthology as it directly relates to Shakespeare and Marlowe. Marlowe's "Edward the Second" is the first piece, followed by four of Shakespeare's greatest works to provide a basis for comparison.

This book considers the influence that sixteenth-century and early seventeenth-century mathematical thinking exerted on the writing and production of popular drama between about 1587 and 1603. It concentrates upon six plays by five early modern dramatists: Tamburlaine, Part 1 (1587) and Tamburlaine, Part 2 (1587) by Christopher Marlowe; Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay (1589) by Robert Greene; Old Fortunatus (1599) by Thomas Dekker; Hamlet (1600) by William Shakespeare; and The Tragedy of Hoffman (1603) by Henry Chettle. Each chapter analyses how the terms, concepts, and implications of contemporary mathematics impacted upon these plays’ vocabularies, forms, and aesthetic and dramaturgical effects and affects.
