This book argues that the two most influential theories on modern human behavior, cultural determinism and evolutionary psychology, are quite inadequate. Cultural deterministic theories deny personal experience and too often fall prey to anthropocentric bias. Most evolutionary psychologists argue that humans are shaped to fit our ancestral past, effectively freezing us in time. Evolution in the Here and Now looks to new factors like social learning and adaptation to explain the idiosyncrasies of human behavior in a more complete and nuanced way. Evolutionary psychologist Nigel Barber shows that human behavior is uniquely crafted by the surrounding environment in underappreciated and surprising ways. For example, commerce and agriculture can be interpreted as adaptive alternatives to hunting and gathering. Irrigated farming was a response to land scarcity, which ultimately permitted the rise of early cities. This cross-discliplinary approach unites the missing ingredients that have for so long impeded our understanding of our own species and its variation across cultures. Evolution in the Here and Now is a bold step forward in the evolutionary understanding of human behavior that marries our biology with our history in ways that have never been attempted before.

"Tom McIver has provided us with a splendid bestiary of anti-evolution ideas... It is a fascinating work, and well worth its cost, either for a chuckle or, on those unpleasant occasions, to face up to a nightmare on the rampage."--Euan G. Nisbet, Nature.

Outlines of Cosmic Philosophy Based on the Doctrines of Evolution with Criticisms on the Positive Philosophy

"The present work is based upon lectures given at Harvard University in the autumn of 1869 and spring of 1871. At the outset these lectures were designed to include only a criticism of the Positive Philosophy, or Positivism, but I have enlarged the course to make it include a somewhat complete outline-sketch of the new philosophy based on the Doctrine of Evolution. The extravagant claim of Positivism to stand for the whole of attainable scientific philosophy is, I trust, finally disposed of of when it is shown that a system of philosophy has been constructed, out of purely scientific materials and by the employment of scientific methods, which opposes a direct negative to every one of the theorems of which Positivism is made up.; I call this system Cosmic Philosophy"--Preface. Three individuals left footprints in East Africa 3.7 million years ago. Walking upright on human feet, they had crossed a threshold in the long path of their evolution from vertebrates, mammals and primates to enter and dominate a new world. They were not alone. Others, related and descended in ways not entirely clear, spread out, flourished and disappeared; some became the people of today. Although we know a great deal of the story and new information is arriving ever more rapidly, there is still more to be learned about where, when and how our ancestors became us. We do know that we arrived not because we were inevitable, but by luck and happenstance along the way. And we know there were other kinds of humans who co-existed with each other and who might be here today but are not. Now updated and revised to reflect the latest findings and their implications, renowned anthropologist, author, and educator, William Howells draws together here the latest from all today's sciences to tell the fascinating stories of our evolution.

So, We're Still Here. Now What? takes you beyond the end of the Mayan calendar and into the predicted New Era, helping you rearrange your life so you can shift more easily with the ongoing changes that lie ahead. The book delves deeply into the hidden principles behind effective shamanic practices that were used long ago to steward people through times of change, and it teaches you how to use these principles to navigate through today's disruptions. You learn how to be supported by the laws of nature and the universe and how to uncover the true power of your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies. The concepts Wiyaka offers have been field tested in her thirty years of private practice as a shamanic practitioner. This is a solid reference volume that belongs in every serious seeker's private collection.
