Readers will find much to admire in the early life stories of leaders in business, government, and technology. From humble beginnings to the heights of fame, these men created opportunities for themselves and others, exerting their influence farther than they could have imagined. Writer Edwin Wildman delves into the biographies of men such as Philip Danforth Armour, the Chicago packing king; P.T. Barnum, the great showman; John M. Browning, the inventor of the machine gun; William L. Douglas, "the boy who pegged shoes and became governor"; Frank L. Woolworth, "the magician of the 5 and 10 cent store"; John Davison Rockefeller; and Adolf Zukor, the motion picture magnate. Wildman also profiles inventors such as Thomas Edison, George Eastman, Alexander Graham Bell, Charles Goodyear, Cyrus Hall McCormick, Isaac Merritt Singer, George Westinghouse, and the Wright brothers. Wildman wrote of these remarkable leaders and their fascinating lives, "They did not live joyless lives; they found pleasure in their work, because they loved their work and hoped to get on in the world."EDWIN WILDMAN was a journalist who covered the Philippines. He also wrote the books Reconstructing America -- Our Next Big Job and Aguinaldo, A Narrative of Filipino Aspirations.

A well-researched, informative book in which Robert Sobel, the noted financial historian, explores the lives and careers of nine representative innovators in business during the last 200 years, men frequently overlooked by contemporary social and political historians: Francis Cabot Lowell, John Wanamaker, Cyrus McCormick, James Hill, James Duke, Theodore Vail, Marcus Loew, Donald Douglas, and Royal Little. Each one was selected to illustrate a different aspect of American business tradition. All share the ability to grasp opportunity and to oppose conventional wisdom when necessary, both of which contributed to the fabric of modern corporate life. In the aggregate they created new organizational traditions that were imitated throughout the Western world. Book jacket.

In this title, first published in 1987, the author discusses the economic and industrial circumstances in Britain under which profit-sharing and co-partnership came into being. He explores the merits and drawbacks of the system as both advocates and opponents saw them, the motivations of employers in introducing profit-sharing schemes, and the implementing of such notable schemes as that of Lever Brothers, a multinational corporation based in Britain. The author also assesses the role of profit-sharing and co-partnership in the development of modern management practices and industrial relations.

Iron and Steel in the German Inflation 1916 1923

This study explains how businessmen in the German iron and steel industry managed their enterprises, dealt with their customers, and acted in their relations with state and society during a period of war, revolution, and economic crisis. Because this industry occupied a central position in Germany during the inflation, the author's investigation illuminates certain crucial aspects of the Weimar Republic that have hitherto been relatively unexplored. The author explains how heavy industry—and particularly the iron and steel industry-successfully took advantage of shortages of raw materials and of inflation to gain the upper hand over customers in the manufacturing industries. He notes that it proved able to resist government and consumer efforts to change and control policies affecting heavy industry and, finally, to lead the counterattack against labor's greatest gain in the Revolution of 1918, the eight-hour day. Although the importance of iron and steel to the German economy declined in relation to that of more advanced sectors of the economy, its highly concentrated character, able leadership, and importance to the war and reconstruction efforts gave it advantages in reconstituting its power within the business community and the Weimar state. Originally published in 1977. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
