Winner of the National Outdoor Book Award Grand Prize Winner, Banff Mountain Book Festival "Forever on the Mountain grips even non-climbers with its harrowing scenes of thorny relationships tested by extraordinary circumstances." —Washington Post In 1967, seven young men, members of a twelve-man expedition led by twenty-four-year-old Joe Wilcox, were stranded at 20,000 feet on Alaska’s Mount McKinley in a vicious Arctic storm. Ten days passed while the storm raged, yet no rescue was mounted. All seven perished in what remains the most tragic expedition in American climbing history. Revisiting the event in the tradition of Norman Maclean’s Young Men and Fire, James M. Tabor uncovers elements of controversy, finger-pointing, and cover-up that make this disaster unlike any other.

“Mountain,” Baldwin said, “is the book I had to write if I was ever going to write anything else.” Go Tell It On The Mountain, first published in 1953, is Baldwin's first major work, a novel that has established itself as an American classic. With lyrical precision, psychological directness, resonating symbolic power, and a rage that is at once unrelenting and compassionate, Baldwin chronicles a fourteen-year-old boy’s discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a storefront Pentecostal church in Harlem one Saturday in March of 1935. Baldwin’s rendering of his protagonist’s spiritual, sexual, and moral struggle of self-invention opened new possibilities in the American language and in the way Americans understand themselves.

Between 1893 and 1920 the U.S. government attempted to transform Kiowa children by immersing them in the forced assimilation program that lay at the heart of that era's Indian policy. Committed to civilizing Indians according to Anglo-American standards of conduct, the Indian Service effected the government's vision of a new Indian race that would be white in every way except skin color. Reservation boarding schools represented an especially important component in that assimilationist campaign. The Rainy Mountain School, on the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Reservation in western Oklahoma, provides an example of how theory and reality collided in a remote corner of the American West. Rainy Mountain's history reveals much about the form and function of the Indian policy and its consequences for the Kiowa children who attended the school. In To Change Them Forever Clyde Ellis combines a survey of changing government policy with a discussion of response and accommodation by the Kiowa people. Unwilling to surrender their identity, Kiowas nonetheless accepted the adaptations required by the schools and survived the attempt to change them into something they did not wish to become. Rainy Mountain became a focal point for Kiowa society.

Suddenly they're in charge of testing a "robo baby" designed to show teens how hard parenting really is. Will playing house lead to the real thing? "I think we should give the 'robo babies' . . . a test drive." Catherine, a leading member of the Carson school board, nodded her approval at Mandy. Mandy hid a smile and grasped at the thread of hope. As both a social worker and a survivor of a harsh upbringing as an unwanted child, she wanted the robo-baby program to have a chance. "My suggestion is that the baby simulator be put to the test in a real family setting," Catherine continued. "Once that's completed, we can use the findings to make an informed decision." Reverend John Thomas leaned forward. "And exactly who would you suggest do this testing, Catherine? All the board members, having already experienced the dubious joys of parenthood, would know what to expect. Thus making us the guinea pigs would prove nothing. And I'd like to go on record as saying that until the board makes a decision, I strongly object to bringing anyone in from the outside." "Exactly, John." Catherine smiled sweetly and turned back to Mandy and the hunky Carson High principal Lucas Michaels. "That's why we need a couple who can keep this discreetly confidential and who have no parenting experience. The obvious choices for the test are Ms. James and Mr. Michaels." The Day That Changed Forever

The events surrounding Christ's Passion really happened, and the people who experienced those events were real people, just like us--individuals with their own histories, preconceptions, desires, and ambitions. In The Day That Changed Forever, Dr. Tim Roehl tells the stories of those events and people, using a combination of rigorous biblical scholarship and what he calls "sanctified imagination." What must Barabbas have been thinking when he was set free so that an innocent man could die in his place? What went through the mind of Simon of Cyrene when he was drafted by Roman soldiers to carry Jesus' cross? What led Annas, a religious leader, to use his influence to condemn Jesus to death? Sometimes a story can become so familiar that it begins to lose its power to startle and amaze its audience--it can be tempting for Christians to think they "know" the story of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection while forgetting to be changed by it. The unique viewpoints of the people at the cross, imagined with compelling realism in The Day That Changed Forever, will bring fresh perspective to the familiar events and awaken in readers a newfound passion for the old, old story.

How to find companies with high long-term value by understanding key trends Warren Buffett once said that his favorite holding period for a stock is “forever.” Now James Altucher shows how to find “forever” stocks—ones you can safely buy and hold for at least twenty years. These companies will profit from broad demographic trends and can ride out any short-term market fluctuations. For instance, Altucher says it’s smart to invest in: Obesity: 33 billion dollars are spent each year on services for the obese Dirty Water: Developing countries are finding it much harder to deliver clean water to their growing populations, and companies that sell clean water treatment technologies will thrive Luxury: The rich are recession-proof, and the stocks of luxury producers make a great hedge against any slowdown in the global economy The Forever Portfolio shows investors how to build a strong, consistent, long-term portfolio, diversified enough to withstand the various cycles of the market.
