During the lifetime of Frederick Chopin (1810 – 1849), the Waltz became very popular, both as a dance and as saloon music. No worthy middle-class home could afford to be without the piano and the Waltz was the perfect piece for the pretty daughter or wife to play. The dance was intimate and one cannot help to reflect how uneasy mothers and fathers were, watching their daughter in familiarly arms of a stranger. The grace sweeps and close body carriage in which the freedom is returned to the females. Chopin himself had poured scorn on the Waltz, writing home from Vienna. “They actually call Waltzes works”. And so eventually did he as the businessman he was. His own Waltzes undoubtedly reached their finest flowering in Paris but he first discovered the form in Warsaw. He took special pains over the structure and continuity and the organic principle of developing variations lies in one way or the other behind most of them.

The Chopin nocturnes constitute 21 short pieces for solo piano written by Frédéric Chopin between 1827 and 1846. They are generally considered among the finest short solo works for the instrument and hold an important place in contemporary concert repertoire. Although Chopin did not invent the nocturne, he popularized and expanded on it, building on the form developed by Irish composer John Field. The nocturnes numbered 1 to 18 were published during his life, in twos or threes, in the order of composition. Numbers 19 and 20 were actually written first, prior to Chopin's departure from Poland, but published posthumously. Number 20 was not originally entitled "nocturne" at all, but since publication in 1870 as such, is generally included with publications and recordings of the set. 3 Nocturnes, Op 9 3 Nocturnes, Op 15 2 Nocturnes, Op 27 2 Nocturnes, Op 32 2 Nocturnes, Op 37 2 Nocturnes, Op 48 2 Nocturnes, Op 55 2 Nocturnes, Op 62

Chopin's 24 Preludes, Op. 28, are a set of short pieces for the piano, one in each of the twenty-four keys, originally published in 1839. Chopin wrote them between 1835 and 1839, partly at Valldemossa, Majorca, where he spent the winter of 1838–39 and where he had fled with George Sand and her children to escape the damp Paris weather. In Majorca, Chopin had a copy of Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, and as in each of Bach's two sets of preludes and fugues, his Op. 28 set comprises a complete cycle of the major and minor keys, albeit with a different ordering. The autograph manuscript, which Chopin carefully prepared for publication, carries a dedication to the German pianist and composer Joseph Christoph Kessler. The French edition was dedicated to the piano-maker and publisher Camille Pleyel, who had commissioned the work for 2,000 francs (equivalent to nearly $30,000 in present day).

Frédéric Chopin's four ballades are one-movement pieces for solo piano, composed between 1831 and 1842. They are some of the most challenging pieces in the standard piano repertoire. The term "ballade" was associated with an old French verse-form used for grand and rhetorical subjects, but may also have connotations of the Medieval heroic ballad, which was sung and danced. There are dramatic and dance-like elements in Chopin's use of the genre, and he may be said to be a pioneer of the ballade as an abstract musical form. The four ballades are said to have been inspired by poet Adam Mickiewicz. The exact inspiration for each individual ballade, however, is unclear and disputed.

nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; This book contains 98 works of the great Polish composer Frederic Chopin. It is the first of 3 volumes of the complete works of his and is comprised mainly of scans of pre 1923 sheet music by various music publishers containing original copyright references. Overall it's a warts and all (although we have cleaned up and digitally enhanced as much as possible) reproduction of some very old manuscripts so there are some minor printing imperfections owing to the age and quality of these original manuscripts. There are also some recent 2018 editions type-set and copyright by Ironpower Publishing. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; We have endeavored to put together in three volumes the most complete collection of Chopin's sheet music available. Contained within this first volume are 4 Ballades, 27 Etudes, 21 Nocturnes, 27 Preludes, and 19 Waltzes which highlight the brilliance of Chopin. With Elsner, composition studies began with the polonaise, but it was immediately followed by rondos and variations (Tomaszewski) The rondo appeared in the Chopin oeuvre as an autonomous work on five occasions, in his youthful years in Warsaw and subsequently in his early Parisian period (1833). It is this musical form that carries the opus number 1: the Rondo in C minor, by the fifteen-year-old Fryderyk, written and published in 1825. So the rondos composed by Chopin are on the one hand testimony to the young composer acquainting himself with one of the basic classical forms (the rondo of the Viennese Classics: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and their imitators), but on the other hand a way of composing in the dazzling and then fashionable style brillant, which for the young pianist Fryderyk was a matter of considerable importance. Rondo in C, Op 1 Rondo a la Mazur, Op 5 Introduction and Rondo, Op 16

Impromptus An impromptu is a short piece of instrumental music that is reminiscient of an improvisation. This means that these works exhibit a certain character of spontaneity. The music shifts from one idea to another without any necessary calculation or caution. These properties give rise to a certain air of carefree latitude, the musical consequences of which are exquisite. Impromptu No. 1 in A-flat Major, Op. 29 Impromptu No. 2 in F-sharp Major, Op. 36 Impromptu No. 3 in G-flat Major, Op. 51 Impromptu No. 4 in C-sharp Minor, Op. 66 — “Fantaisie-Impromptu”

"In all my life I have never again been able to find such a beautiful melody." -Chopin, on Op. 10, No. 3 Chopin's Études are the foundation of a new system of technical piano playing that was radical and revolutionary the first time they appeared. They are some of the most challenging and evocative pieces of all the works in concert piano repertoire. Because of this, the music remains popular and often performed in both concert and private stages.[1] Some are so popular they have been given nicknames; arguably the most popular of all is Op. 10, No. 3, sometimes identified by the names "Tristesse" (Sadness) or "Farewell" (L'Adieu), as well as the Revolutionary Étude (Op. 10, No. 12). Although no nicknames are of Chopin's original creation, they create interesting pretext and encourage the imagination to fabricate epic works embodied by these studies.

Most of Frédéric Chopin's polonaises were written for solo piano. He wrote his first polonaise in 1817, when he was 7; his last was the Polonaise- Fantaisie of 1846, three years before his death. Among the best known polonaises are the "Military" Polonaise in A, Op. 40, No. 1, and the "Heroic" or "Drum" Polonaise in A♭, Op. 53. There is also the Andante spianato et grande polonaise brillante in E♭, Op.22, for piano and orchestra, which also exists in a solo piano version; and the Introduction and Polonaise brillante in C major, Op. 3, for cello and piano. Chopin wrote at least 23 polonaises for piano solo. Of these: 7, including the Polonaise-Fantaisie, were published in his lifetime 3 were published posthumously with opus numbers 6 were published posthumously without opus numbers at least 7 are lost. 2 Polonaises, Op 26 2 Polonaises, Op 40 Polonaise, Op 44 Polonaise, Op 53 Polonaise-Fantaisie, Op 61 3 Polonaises, Op 71

"How will gravity array itself, if wit is already cloaked so darkly?", asked Robert Schumann in his review of Chopin's Scherzo in B minor, Op. 20. His astonishment is easily understood, since the name "scherzo" (It.) literally means "joke", whereas Chopin's scherzos are almost never humorous or light-hearted. Quite the contrary: the four expansive one-movement works to which Chopin gave the title scherzo are marked with a drama and form which were unprecedented in the genre. They are given here in chronological order: Scherzo in B minor, Op. 20, published in 1835 (date of composition difficult to establish precisely) Scherzo in B flat minor, Op. 31, completed 1837 and published the same year Scherzo in C sharp minor, Op. 39, composed 1839, published the following year Scherzo in E major, Op. 54, composed 1842-1843, published 1843
