The Fw 200 Condor first made an appearance over Norway in April 1940, flying with the unit that eventually become synonymous with it – Kampfgeschwader 40. As the war in the west progressed, and German forces advanced, French airfields opened up, allowing the Condor to fly around the UK and out into the Atlantic, where it rapidly established itself as one of the key menaces to Allied shipping. Able to attack shipping directly, or able to guide U-Boats to their prey the Condor scored its first major success when it crippled the liner Empress of Great Britain. But the tables were to turn on the 'Scourge of the Atlantic' as mechanical failures induced by their harsh operating environment and changes in Allied tactics began to take a toll. Vulnerable to aerial attack, the deployment of Allied carriers and their associated fighters combined with the introduction of more loing range maritime patrol aircraft exposed the Condor's deficiencies. Packed with rare first-hand accounts, profile artwork and photographs, this is the history of one of the unsung types to take to the skies during World War 2.

This is a study of aircraft from World War II. The book is part of a 12-volume series, which covers the production and operation of aircraft worldwide. Each volume is devoted to essays on aircraft types, their development and option, systems and equipment. As well as outlining developments, each article seeks to explain why progress was in a particular direction, emphasizing the political, strategic or economic factors that dictated that development. Moving from the general to the specific, graphs and tabular data relating to typical or significant aircraft or allied subjects are provided in each section. The series concentrates on the development of aircraft from the viewpoint of their technical development, the effect of technical development on the use of aircraft, and the effect of their usage on technical development. Contributors to this title include: E.R. Hooton, Derek Wood, Alfred Price, M.J.F. Bowyer, Group Captain Peter Hearn, Norman Friedman, Elfan Ap Rees, Les Coombes, Andrew Nahum, Captain Eric Brown and John Golley.

From the team that published the 'Famous Russian Aircraft' series comes Soviet Air Power in World War 2, the authoritative guide to all of the aircraft flown by the Soviet Air Force during the conflict. As well as exploring in-depth the individual aircraft types, this book also takes a closer look at the Soviet Air Force's structure and aircraft fleet. Included are all of the unit insignia of Soviet air armies, divisions and regiments, as well as the varied artwork and camouflage schemes used on individual aircraft. An extensive selection of unseen photographs and colour side views of all the aircraft types that operated in the immediate pre-war years and in World War 2 are featured, including many British and American aircraft flown by the Soviet Air Force and Soviet Naval Aviation. The book also reveals information about the Soviet Air Force commanders and famous aces of the period; the aces' aircraft and their personal insignia are illustrated, as well as the combat operations they flew against the Axis air forces between 1941 and 1945. Written by an acknowledged expert in Soviet and Russian military aviation, and illustrated with photographs, profiles and detailed line drawings, this guide to the Soviet Air Force in World War 2 will be of interest not only to aviation and military history enthusiasts but to modellers of this period.
