Leaving behind her parents and siblings in Poland, teenager Dora Waldman crosses the Atlantic to the United States in 1914. She can't wait to fulfill her dreams in this great nation, but she's unprepared for the reality of an immigrant's life. Settling in the Lower East Side of New York City, Dora yearns to have an education, and she attends night courses at the Settlement House, a school designed specifically to help immigrants adjust to living in a new country. She learns how to sew, finds a job at a dress factory, and becomes an excellent seamstress. Dora's hardworking, positive attitude quickly earns her the respect of friends and co-workers. She progresses from the Settlement House to a successful career, encouraged by the love and support of her proxy parents, and the men who seek her hand in marriage. Relive the American era from 1914 to 1920, a time when women threw off the yoke of oppression and embraced their true potential. Full of warmth, humor, and loyalty, Determined Dora is an engaging story of one woman's resolve to overcome her obstacles and build a bright new future.

Crystallizing Chaos is a wryly comic tale of balancing academia with action and replacing footnotes with a sense of fun. A high-brow college student, Daniel Coventry, hopes to be a writer. He encounters the forgotten but immensely gifted pulp novelist Stephen Chidley, who wrote action-oriented novels by the dozens in a month apiece while living his adventures. He is also inspired by the novelists granddaughter Dora, who resides in Stephens home near Daniels dorm. Through Daniel, they become entangled with his best professor, Cynthia Schuler, an outspoken feminist and scholar. Cynthia also wrangles with her chauvinist, unfaithful husband and has fallen for her favorite student after many rounds of lovemaking in her office. Each of them confronts the fear of failure. Daniel is afraid of flunking if he cant complete a novel for his graduation. Stephen is afraid thathe abused his fabulous storytelling talents as a pulp writer who came close to greatness only in a single memorable novel. Dora is afraid of any loss of independence. Cynthia is afraid of failing Daniel and of losing him to Dora. Step by comic misstep, they confront their differences and the chasm that divides the ivory tower from popular culture. With a month remaining, they decide that only one solution will enable Daniel to begin his book and race to finish it in time forgraduation: Let him crystallize the chaos of their year-long battle in a way that blends the best of academia and action!

The Summer Wind is the second book in Monroe’s Lowcountry Summer trilogy, following the New York Times bestselling The Summer Girls. This series is a poignant and heartwarming story of three half-sisters and their grandmother, who is determined to help them rediscover their southern roots and family bonds. It’s midsummer and Eudora, nicknamed Dora, is staying at Sea Breeze, the family’s ancestral home on Sullivan’s Island. For years, Dora has played the role of the perfect wife and mother in a loveless marriage. Now her husband filed for divorce, her child is diagnosed with autism, and her house is on the market. Dora’s facade collapses under the weight of her grief and she suffers “broken heart syndrome.” Mamaw and the girls rally around Dora—but it’s up to Dora to heal herself as she spends the summer prowling the beach, discovering the secrets of the island and her heart. This is a summer of discovery for all the women of Sea Breeze. Carson returns from Florida to face life-changing decisions, Lucille confronts a health scare, and an unexpected visitor has Harper reconsidering her life’s direction. When tropical storm winds batter the island, the women must band together and weather the tempest—both the one outside their windows and the raging sea of emotions within each of them. They must learn again what it means to be a sister. It is up to Mamaw to keep the light burning at Sea Breeze to guide the girls through the lies, the threats, and the rocky waters of indecision to home.

In his lifetime the great American playwright Arthur Miller published two highly regarded collections of stories, I Don't Need You Any More (1967) and Homely Girl, a Life (1995). Shortly after his death in 2005 a final collection, Presence (2007), appeared. Now, all eighteen of these stories are gathered together in one volume for the first time, including the six from Presence, previously only published in the USA. In his plays Miller took on the big themes of the day, putting stories of the Depression, wartime deceit and the McCarthy era on stage with an energy and passion not seen before and rarely since. In these stories he turns his attention to smaller, more intimate themes, yet still brings to bear the profound insight, humanism, empathy and wit of his work for the theatre. Including the early, O. Henry Award-winning 'I Don't Need You Anymore', the original story of 'The Misfits' on which the film was based, and the beautiful late story ' Presence', this collection offers a fresh perspective on the great writer and his work, here informed by an unusual sensuality and delicacy. When Homely Girl, a Life was published in America the critic for the New York Times wrote of those three stories: 'The ability to sum up in clear, unequivocal prose the essence of emotion, a situation, a theme - characteristic of Mr Miller's best writing - makes the reader wish that these stories were longer, and that there were more of them.' At last there are.

From the acclaimed author of Best Intentions and Waiting to Surface comes a “taut and disturbing” (The New York Times) psychological thriller about a television news anchor whose idyllic life is shattered when her shadowed past comes back to haunt her. Laura Barrett has it all—a supportive husband, a beautiful baby daughter, and a career in television that has made her face familiar to millions. But there’s a shadow over Laura’s happiness. And when a man approaches her after she leaves work and calls her “Marta,” Laura knows that what she’s feared for so long has finally arrived. The postcard with the coffin on it confirms that her idyll is over. Marta was a teenager, growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, when she did something terrible one night in a run-down motel, and she’s been running from it ever since. For twenty years, Laura has been trying to erase Marta from her memory. Now a man from her past is confronting her, demanding answers. At first, Laura thinks she can control the situation. But suddenly, she’s facing every mother’s nightmare: her daughter is kidnapped. To get her baby back, Laura’s going to have to risk her marriage, her career, and her life, and finally face up to what happened that night so long ago. Gripping and suspenseful, The Last Good Night “ratchets up the tension and fully involves the reader in her heroine’s harrowing ordeal” (Publishers Weekly).

New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Weiner's newest novel tells the story of a young mother's move to a postcard-perfect Connecticut town and the secrets she uncovers there. For Kate Klein, a semi-accidental mother of three, suburbia's been full of unpleasant surprises. Her once-loving husband is hardly ever home. The supermommies on the playground routinely snub her. Her days are spent carpooling and enduring endless games of Candy Land, and at night, most of her orgasms are of the do-it-yourself variety. When a fellow mother is murdered, Kate finds that the unsolved mystery is one of the most interesting things to happen in Upchurch since her neighbors broke ground for a guesthouse and cracked their septic tank. Even though Kate's husband and the police chief warn her that crime-fighting's a job best left to professionals, she can't let it go. So Kate launches an unofficial investigation -- from 8:45 to 11:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, when her kids are in nursery school -- with the help of her hilarious best friend, carpet heiress Janie Segal, and Evan McKenna, a former flame she thought she'd left behind in New York City. As the search for the killer progresses, Kate is drawn deeper into the murdered woman's double life. She discovers the secrets and lies behind Upchurch's placid picket-fence facade -- and the choices and compromises all modern women make as they navigate between independence and obligation, small towns and big cities, being a mother and having a life of one's own. Engrossing, suspenseful, and laugh-out-loud funny, Goodnight Nobody is another unputdownable, timely tale; an insightful mystery with a great heart and a narrator you'll never forget.
