Cargo Handling and the Modern Port covers various concerns in the handling of goods in a contemporary port. The book also details the functions of ports, along with the impact of the silent revolutions that took place in the major ports around the world. The text first covers the port itself, such as its functions, the types of port managements, and administration. Next, the book discusses the basics of operating a port, and then proceeds to tackling port labor. Chapter 4 details the various changes that took place in the major ports throughout the world after 1945. The next series of chapters deals with various concerns in cargo, such as unit load, containers, and bulk cargos. The last chapter of the text discusses the ports of the future. The book will be of great use to individuals involved in logistics, forwarding, and ship transportation industries.

This is particularly for the benefit of shore-based personnel who often do not get the opportunity to see first-hand how the cargoes they are working on are handled and moved. The book covers: • Ship types and the parts of ships relating to the handling and stowage of cargo • The cargoes themselves (including many bulk cargoes and heavy lifts) • Dedicated terminals and their equipment and accessories • Cranes • Container types • Port equipment, such as forklift trucks and accessories • Other handling equipment. There are about 800 terms and definitions, including over 200 new or expanded terms since the second edition.

Freighters of the 1950s and '60s - with masts, booms & hatches - were the last of their generation. It was the end of an era, just before the massive transition to faster, more efficient containerized shipping and on larger and larger vessels. These were 'working ships', but many would be retired prematurely and finish-up under flags of convenience, for virtually unknown owners, before going off to the scrappers in the 1970s and '80s. For some ships, their life's work was cut and their decommissioning was quick. In this new book, William Miller remembers the likes of Cunard, Holland America & United States Lines on the North Atlantic, Moore McCormack Lines to South America, Farrell Lines to Africa and P&O out East.
