A scientific exploration into humanity’s obsession with the afterlife and quest for immortality from the bestselling author and skeptic Michael Shermer In his most ambitious work yet, Shermer sets out to discover what drives humans’ belief in life after death, focusing on recent scientific attempts to achieve immortality along with utopian attempts to create heaven on earth. For millennia, religions have concocted numerous manifestations of heaven and the afterlife, and though no one has ever returned from such a place to report what it is really like—or that it even exists—today science and technology are being used to try to make it happen in our lifetime. From radical life extension to cryonic suspension to mind uploading, Shermer considers how realistic these attempts are from a proper skeptical perspective. Heavens on Earth concludes with an uplifting paean to purpose and progress and how we can live well in the here-and-now, whether or not there is a hereafter.

The Heavens on Earth explores the place of the observatory in nineteenth-century science and culture. Astronomy was a core pursuit for observatories, but usually not the only one. It belonged to a larger group of “observatory sciences” that also included geodesy, meteorology, geomagnetism, and even parts of physics and statistics. These pursuits coexisted in the nineteenth-century observatory; this collection surveys them as a coherent whole. Broadening the focus beyond the solitary astronomer at his telescope, it illuminates the observatory’s importance to technological, military, political, and colonial undertakings, as well as in advancing and popularizing the mathematical, physical, and cosmological sciences. The contributors examine “observatory techniques” developed and used not only in connection with observatories but also by instrument makers in their workshops, navy officers on ships, civil engineers in the field, and many others. These techniques included the calibration and coordination of precision instruments for making observations and taking measurements; methods of data acquisition and tabulation; and the production of maps, drawings, and photographs, as well as numerical, textual, and visual representations of the heavens and the earth. They also encompassed the social management of personnel within observatories, the coordination of international scientific collaborations, and interactions with dignitaries and the public. The state observatory occupied a particularly privileged place in the life of the city. With their imposing architecture and ancient traditions, state observatories served representative purposes for their patrons, whether as symbols of a monarch’s enlightened power, a nation’s industrial and scientific excellence, or republican progressive values. Focusing on observatory techniques in settings from Berlin, London, Paris, and Rome to Australia, Russia, Thailand, and the United States, The Heavens on Earth is a major contribution to the history of science. The world's economy is in crisis. Public spending has reached dizzying heights, national debts are crippling governments and economic growth is lacklustre or non-existent. It has been suggested that this is an unavoidable phase in the world's economic development. Not so, says J. P. Floru. Rather, we in the West have sleepwalked our way into a culture that condemns us to economic decline while savvier nations flourish. Heavens on Earth offers both a manifesto for creating prosperity and a fascinating tale of global growth. It takes a sweeping view of traditions across the world and across the centuries, introducing us to the remarkable individuals who made it all happen. Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Chile, the United States, post-war Germany, China and the Industrial Revolution in England all turned the tide from misery to plenty. Across time and space, the economic disease and the cure were remarkably similar. Heavens on Earth is a book for optimists: if we apply the successful formula of the past, the scope for economic prosperity is limitless.

Spirituality is the core of our humanness, the essence of who we are and how we express our vitality - our aliveness - whether we are religious or not. In Building Heaven on Earth, Dwight Webb encourages readers to challenge religion's claim to be caretakers of our spiritual life. He argues that we are spiritual beings by nature and that our search must first and foremost be inward, and not skyward. He ask readers to consider that it is our soul self within, that expresses our tangible apirit as we choose to act with kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. Dr Webb draws upon his personal experiences as well as his four decades of teaching and research as a Professor of Counseling Psychology in the Graduate School at the University of New Hampshire. His book ask us to claim our human spirit and not relegate it to any religions, cults or other institutions requiring devotion and unquestioned faith. It is in our inner life that we will sort our values, our purpose, and personal meaning. It is in our inner life where we make the decisions and take responsibility for contributing to the common good, as each person builds his or her own heaven on earth.

Revelations is the only part of the Bible which claims to produce language which has been precisely dictated by the Lord Jesus. Three times over, the Lord testifies personally to its truth, accuracy and authority (Revelation 22:16, 18, 20). The book reveals to us more about our future destiny in definite terms than any other book of the Bible. Nearly all the contents of the book relate to the events which precede and follow close upon the Second Coming of the Lord. His redemption divides into three parts -- to redeem the earth from Satan's rule, to cause "the meek" to "inherit the earth, and to delight themselves in the abundance of peace."

Middle-aged, middle-class, middle-management and middle-of-the-road . . . David Keating fears he may be all these things. What saves him from despair is his middle-years marriage to touch driven Annet: an attraction of opposites. The passion - and the problems - of their late flowering love give meaning to David's life. But in the physical and emotional turmoil that follow the birth of their daughter Freya, David's sleepless nights are tortured by the memory of an employee he treated shabbily. And as he and Annet struggle to adjust to late parenthood, he is haunted by the idea that someone is watching him. The idea quickly becomes an obsession, and when the mysterious figure disappears he sets out to discover the truth, a search for which he will pay an high price in terms of his own relationships. For the truth isn't always comfortable, and confronting it can be dangerous. Only when David has stared harsh reality in the face does he fully understand that a dreamed of heaven is not 'out there' - but here. And on hold.

Much of the literature on the book of Revelation paints a frightening apocalyptic vision of the end times. Michael Battle offers an alternative look at Revelation in this new work, seeing it instead as a hopeful call to bring heaven on earth. Battle explores the problematic imagery found in Revelation before showing how similar problems play out in our contemporary world. Battle sees Revelation as a guide that shows us that we can live out God's call for heaven on earth by living in community with one another, as exhibited through the writings of Martin Luther King Jr., Desmond Tutu, Rowan Williams, and Ubuntu theology. He writes, “I seek to imagine in my particular Christian context how a view of heaven need not lead to culture wars and further excuses for oppressing others. Heaven, as envisioned by John of Patmos, has much greater purpose.â€

When you read your Bible, do you see and understand Gods plan for all mankind in it? Do you understand why Gods son had to become one of us? Is there really a hell burning with fire? Do you wonder will there really be a rapture, and all will go to heaven? Anti-Christ, is he someone that is yet to come, and do we really have to fear him? Is the number 666 actually a mark that we will have on our right hand or on our forehead? What is it, or what was it, that no man could buy or sell? Do you really want to know the answers to these, and more questions? God has the answers in his book, the Bible. As a Christian, you should know, no, you need to know the answers; you need to know the truth, and the truth is in Gods Word. How can you prove we are in the end-time? And how can you be saved from the wrath of God? Do you believe God as much as you believe man? This book will give answers to believers and nonbelievers alike. It is a book for all ages, written in plain and easy-to-understand language showing that God does have all the answers to his book, the Bible. You will never be so glad you have read it.

In search of the next travel nirvana. If HOTEL HEAVEN'S quest was to find the true essence of a luxury hotel, then HEAVEN ON EARTH is designed to find the true essence of a destination and why it is hip and happening. Nothing, not even terrorism and plague, can stop our obsession with travel. After more than 15 years on planes, trains and automobiles, Matt Brace has carefully selected the hippest and hottest destinations - places that he believes will become 'to die for' spots in coming years, for a variety of reasons. Some of these destinations are exciting and emerging as new travel hot-spots due possibly to the changing of a political ideology (like the end of communism) or new economic prosperity, or after opening their borders and embracing tourism after years of isolation. Others are just simply getting cool because the travel herd moves and is finding new patches of grass to graze upon. As with HOTEL HEAVEN, HEAVEN ON EARTH will delve deep into the soul and character of each destination and reveal the true beating heart. How does it present itself, what does it look, taste, smell and feel like; how is it unique, who lives there, who travels there, how does it celebrate life and let its hair down, and what makes it tick? It's about getting to the underbelly of a place and discovering its pulse, its lifeblood. It's about living and breathing the place intensely and drinking in the atmosphere.

Jesus Christ is not a human man, Jesus Christ is a deity. He can transform himself into anything. Jesus Christ and his angels can make human beings experience ectoplasm and can possess you in broad daylight and at night. Any spirit or deity that can shift-shape himself into anything like a fog, smoke, fire, clouds, insects, people or animals is considered not human, suspicious, unknown, scary, sneaky, secretive, and evil.
