"Helena, the mother of the first Christian emperor Constantine, is best known for the last two years of her life, when she traveled around the Eastern Mediterranean, and for something that, in all likelihood, she did not do: the discovery of the True Cross relic. Using a vast range of sources, from textual and epigraphical to visual, and an array of archaeological insights from the places Helena lived at or visited, this book instead investigates Helena in the round, taking seriously the ruptures in her life course and her changing positions within the imperial and female networks of her time. The book follows Helena's life, the majority of which was spent in the third century and during the period of the tetrarchy, and explores the different ways in which she was commemorated after her death, up to the late sixth century. It wrestles Helena's historical significance back from medieval legends, to demonstrate the development and purpose of her role within Constantinian politics and to chart her meandering impact on the image and behavior of the Christian empress in the late Roman world"--

From facing wild beasts in the arena to governing the Roman Empire, Christian women--as preachers and philosophers, martyrs and empresses, virgins and mothers--influenced the shape of the church in its formative centuries. This book provides in a single volume a nearly complete compendium of extant evidence about Christian women in the second through fifth centuries. It highlights the social and theological contributions they made to shaping early Christian beliefs and practices, integrating their influence into the history of the patristic church and showing how their achievements can be edifying for contemporary Christians.

Remains of the Jews studies the rise of Christian Empire in late antiquity (300-550 C.E.) through the dense and complex manner in which Christian authors wrote about Jews in the charged space of the “holy land.” The book employs contemporary cultural studies, particularly postcolonial criticism, to read Christian writings about holy land Jews as colonial writings. These writings created a cultural context in which Christians viewed themselves as powerful—and in which, perhaps, Jews were able to construct a posture of resistance to this new Christian Empire. Remains of the Jews reexamines familiar types of literature—biblical interpretation, histories, sermons, letters—from a new perspective in order to understand how power and resistance shaped religious identities in the later Roman Empire.

A World's Christian Convention A.D. 325 with a Life of Constantine. "The words Council, Synod, and Convention are synonymous. There were many Councils held in Christendom before that of Nice; but they were not Ecumenical, that is, general or universal." "The Council of Nice set the example of trying to compel Christians to adopt its modes of faith. That plan was not so fair as those pursued by the great philosophers." This book contains information on the life of Constantine "being decidedly the most conspicuous figure in the picture.

William was truly at a loss for words. He moved closer to her. As he approached the window where she was standing, the scent of fresh blossoms in her hair filled the air. Helena had a natural beauty that hadnt aged with the years. Life had been good to them both. Over the years, he wanted to tell her so many things about his past, about his life in the Valley. She never asked where he came from; as far as she knew he had no family and no homeland. He had traveled far and wide fighting in many wars securing his own future as an adept swordsman, one not to be challenged with in battle. He had obtained his fortune through his bounties. When he met Helena, war was raging in her land, their land now. Helenas kingdom was being torn apart by the greedy and black magic worshippers of Augustas family. It was this war, which had brought him to her, and now he feared, it would be war again, which would take her from him.
