Herpes Simplex Virus is the fifth monograph to be published in the Bloomsbury Series of Clinical Science. It provides an authoritative review of the key issues related to this common clinical problem. The characteristics of the virus, its epidemiology and the diag nosis and management of the various forms of infection are all considered. Adrian Mindel is an international authority on this subject; he joined the Academic Department of Genito-urinary Medicine at the Middlesex Hospital in 1980 and has been actively involved in HSV research since that time. His major research interests include the epidemiology and treatment of genital herpes, the epidemi ology of neo-natal herpes and the many and varied features of HSV infections in immuno-compromised patients. The continuing aim of the Bloomsbury Series is to identify the growing areas of clinical research and relate these to current and future medical practice. In Herpes Simplex Virus such aspirations have been successfully achieved. London, May 1989 Jack Tinker Preface There has been considerable interest in herpes simplex viruses (HSV) over recent years. Amongst the many reasons for this are the introduction of safe and efficacious therapy, the recognition that HSV may cause life-threatening infections in neonates and immunocompromised patients, the observation that genital herpes is one of the commonest viral sexually transmitted diseases and the possible association of HSV with cervical cancer.

Although upstaged by the tragic appearance of the human immunodeficiency virus, herpes simplex viruses (HSV) types 1 and 2 continue to be major human pathogens against which we lack acceptable vaccines or other means of immunological control. The virus is large and complex, coding for 70 or more proteins. Although many mysteries remain to be unraveled, our knowledge base regarding genomic organization, gene expression and regulation, pathogenesis, and immune recog nition of component parts is quite considerable. Indeed, meet ings devoted entirely to herpesviruses are conspicuous by their frequency and excellent, yet sometimes exclusive, attendance. The purpose of this volume is to compile in a single book a series of reviews by leading investigators that deal with various aspects of virus-host interactions and which hopefully will pro vide clues as to how to best manage HSV from an immunobio logical perspective. Ultimately, one anticipates that a full under standing of virus-host interaction will lead to strategies useful for the prevention and control of HSV. The state of current progress with conventional vaccines is presented, as is a chapter on intracellular immunization. This latter novel approach to virus infections comes at approximately the bicentenary of Jenner's introduction of a successful conventional immunization strategy.

As a young ophthalmologist, I found corneal epithelial diseases a subject diffcult to grasp. One day, it occurred to me that the reason might be a lack of images showing the nature of the components of the changes visible with the slit lamp. With the slit lamp, the inevitable eye movements that blur the image limited the magnifcation level, but perhaps photography might be the answer. It was not a short journey, but in the end the idea proved right. By trial and error, the quality of the images improved, and after some time, I found that the resolution allowed reasonable comparisons with available images of histological preparations. Such comparisons allowed better und- standing of the substructures of epithelial in vivo lesions and, in conjunction with their in vivo dynamic features, eventually an understanding of at least some mechanisms behind them. This book, originating from over 20 years of experience with observations of ocular surface changes at high magnifcation level, covers several aspects of corneal epithelial lesions caused in humans by herpes simplex virus: various shapes of the lesions, their substructure and mechanisms behind them; morphological features of the healing p- cess, sequelae, complications, and some accompanying signs; and some rare cases. For those less familiar with the slit lamp image, I have added explanatory drawings to facilitate comprehension.

Herpes Simplex Virus Protocols comprises a wide range of experimental protocols that should be especially useful to new workers in herpes virology. Hopefully, it will also provide information for those with experience in the field, as well as those embarking on techniques that are new to them. Obviously the range of topics covered cannot be comprehensive, but we have tried to provide protocols dealing with those procedures that are most widely used; and we have selected expert authors accordingly. We have also tried to cover the range from the more biological in vivo maneuvers to purely molecular procedures, taking into account the topical interest in the potential use of HSV as a therapeutic tool. In this way there should be sufficient inf- mation for most procedures the average herpes virologist is likely to require-- at least at this moment in time! Since the herpesviruses are a large family, we have largely based the protocols on the virus we know best--herpes simplex virus. With this as the prototype, it should be relatively easy to extrapolate and make the necessary modifications required for application to some of the other herpesviruses, especially members of the alpha group, such as PRV and EHV. It would have been an impossible task to include chapters covering the unique aspects of each known herpesvirus.

Herpes Simplex viruses are among the most common viral infections of human worldwide. These viruses can cause different diseases such as: Encephalitis, Genital herpes and Neonatal herpes. HSV-2 is of public health importance because it is as an important co-factor for HIV infection. Serological studies can measure both symptomatic and asymptomatic infections. Seropositivity is a potential indicator of infectivity and can be used to guide and reform behavioral patterns for prevention of HSV transmission. A clear understanding of epidemiology of HSV in different populations is required to develope the most effective, appropriate preventive and control strategies. The present study was the first study to our knowledge on determination of seroepidemiology and important variables of two types of HSV infections in Bandar Anzali, northern Iran.

Do you have herpes? Does your partner? Are you sexually active, and want to understand the best possible way to minimize your risks of contracting this sexually transmitted disease (STD)? Receiving a herpes simplex diagnosis does not have to be the end of the world. This is definitely devastating news. It can come as a shock to some people, catching them totally off guard. Perhaps you have known for a while that your sexual behavior was risky, but you have always been lucky, and unfortunately, that luck has come to an end. You are probably wondering ... - What happens now? - How did this happen? - Will this lead to other health problems? - Will I ever be able to have sex again? - What will my partner/spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend think? - Am I a bad person? I thought only prostitutes and people who had sex with lots of partners got herpes and other STDs. If for whatever reason you or someone you love has been diagnosed with herpes, you should immediately understand there are some serious health issues which could arise from complications of this infection. This is definitely not a health problem to be ignored. It certainly won't go away on its own, as the herpes simplex virus is a lifetime partnership with its host. However, managed properly, which means a combination of particular lifestyle practices, dietary habits and traditional medicine, herpes need be nothing more than a medical condition which is easily treated and managed. If you believe that sexually-transmitted diseases and infections only happen to prostitutes, drug abusers and other "at risk" individuals existing on the fringes of society, think again. If you think you are "bulletproof" against herpes and other sexually transmitted diseases, consider the following statistics. - Nearly 4 billion people 50 years of age or younger currently have a herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-1) infection. - In the United States, 1 in every 6 people between the ages of 14 and 49 has genital herpes. - It is believed that as much as 50% of all people with herpes type 1 or type 2 do not know they have the infection. - Neonatal herpes passes the virus from a pregnant woman to her newborn child, and kills 6 in every 10 infected newborns. - Herpes complications include ulcers, scabs, pain while urinating and having sex, newborn infection, bladder problems, meningitis, encephalitis, inflammation of the rectum and brain-based health disorders when the condition infects the nervous system. Aside from the physical health problems the herpes simplex virus can create, low self-esteem, embarrassment, shame and a withdrawal from society are frequent emotion-based symptoms. When you understand how to treat and manage your condition holistically and naturally, you get from relief from those emotional issues, as well as the following benefits. - Fewer flareups. - Improved self-esteem. - Less visible symptoms. - A healthier sex life. - Lower risk of contracting HSV from your infected partner, or a lower chance that you will pass the virus to someone else. - Fewer emotional ups and downs attached to your herpes infection. - Better overall health and wellness, because of the smart nutrition habits you will learn. When you know natural lifestyle and dietary practices you can follow to minimize the impact of herpes, this infection doesn't need to ruin your life, emotionally or physically. That is why we have created this special book titled ... "Herpes Simplex Virus: Managing HSV Holistically"
