This volume is derived from a symposium on High Latitude Limnology held during the 23rd Congress of the Societas Internationalis Limnologiae in Hamilton, New Zealand. The symposium stemmed from our belief that an exchange of views between limnologists working in the north and south polar zones would be timely and productive. Over the last decade there has been a major increase in the limnological research effort in Antarctica with the expansion of science programmes there by many nations from both the northern and southern hemispheres. Freshwater research has also continued to develop in the Arctic, stimulated by the need for basic information to assess environmental impacts of the oil industry, mining, urbanisation and other human activities. By bringing together aquatic investigators from both poles we hope to draw attention to the distinctive features that high latitude systems hold in common, and to the marked contrasts between and within each zone. The dominant impression from the assemblage of papers presented here is one of great limnological diversity. The studies include clear, turbid and brown water rivers in the sub Arctic (LaPerriere, Van Nieuwenhuyse & Anderson); chlorophyte dominated streams in the maritime Antarctic (Hawes); streams on the antarctic continent lined with thick cyanobacterial mats (Howard-Williams & Vincent); meromictic waters in the Arctic (Ouellet, Dickman, Bisson & Page) and Antarctic (e. g.

Truly high altitude aquatic ecosystems are found primarily at lower latitudes: vast regions in the tropical part of the Andes, the Himalayas and Tibet, considerable areas in East Africa, and minor zones of Oceania. However, despite their abundance in these regions, their biology and ecology has never been summarized in detail. A current synthesis of the topic is therefore timely. High altitude waters are ideal systems with which to address a broad range of key and topical themes in ecology, both at the regional and global scales. From specific functional adaptations of aquatic species to harsh environmental conditions through to global diversity patterns along altitudinal gradients and extinction risks of mountain populations due to vanishing glaciers, ecological patterns and processes found in high altitude waters are both diverse and singular. Although poorly considered in classical textbooks of ecology and limnology, high altitude waters have much to offer existing (aquatic) ecological theories and applications. These often threatened and exploited habitats are also ideal for studying the intimate interactions between social and ecological systems that characterize the majority of ecosystems in the Anthropocene.

Diminishing water resources are becoming of increasing concern because in many countries the sources of drinking water are close to being exhausted. Therefore, there is an urgent need to study and assess the various components of global water resources, of which freshwater lakes are one of the most important. This book discusses contemporary limnological problems on a local, regional and global scale with special emphasis on the application of remote-sensing techniques to monitor lake dynamics, thermodynamics, biodynamics and water quality. An interactive approach is used to assess various processes from both the numerical modelling and observational standpoints. The authors recommend a combined use of in situ and remote-sensing data, giving a specific comparative analysis of the lakes of north-western Russia and the American Great Lakes as an illustration. The role of GIS is discussed and emphasised.

This book contains the Proceedings of the Symposium on Perspectives in Southern Hemisphere Limnology which was held from 3-13 July 1984 in Wilderness, South Africa. It can be asked why this Symposium was necessary at a time when conferences, symposia and other gatherings of learned people abound. Limnologists in the Southern Hemisphere have for some time been pointing out that limnological theory and inland water management practices have been developed almost exclusively in Northern Hemisphere temperate latitudes. Most of the land masses of the Southern Hemisphere fall within lower latitudes, 0 from 20-40 S, where the climate tends to be dry, with low cloud cover and with high levels of incident radiation and high water temperatures. Wide extremes are experienced in both rainfall and runoff, which occur mainly in summer. Sedimentary geological structures give rise to dispersive soils and highly turbid waters. Physiological, behavioural or developmental adaptations in the floral and faunal components are necessary to cope with desiccation and low visibility.
