Over the course of his long career of covering major league baseball, numerous players, managers, umpires, and games, as well as unexpected and humorous events on and off the field, have made lasting impressions on John Kuenster. This is a selection of essays Kuenster wrote for "Warm Up Tosses," the Baseball Digest column he has written every month since he became editor of the Digest in 1969. He shares his opinions and insights on managers in columns like "Casey Stengel Was One of a Kind" and "George Anderson Still 'Sparky' When Talking Baseball"; history in "President Kennedy, No Stranger to Baseball" and "Baseball's Brightest and Darkest Moments of 1900s"; pitchers in "Here's a Vote for Whitey Ford" and "Complete-Game Pitchers, A Disappearing Breed in the Majors"; umpires in "Umps, Love 'em or Not, They're Vital to the Game"; infielders in "Derek Jeter, Cornerstone of Recent Yankee Championships" and "Third Basemen, Crucial to Winning but Often Overlooked"; outfielders in "Please, No 'Soft Pitches' for Hank Aaron" and "Barry Bonds Had a Season for the Ages"; and catchers in "Many Catchers Struggling through Learning Process". Also included are some of Kuenster's columns about scouts and coaches, team executives, hitting, baseball in general, teams, ball parks, the World Series, humor, and Hall of Famers.

In her best-selling first book, Home: Tales of a Heritage Farm (2005), Anny Scoones introduced readers to historic Glamorgan Farm. In Home and Away, Anny presents more stories about the joys and sorrows, excitements and mishaps and also takes readers farther afield, sharing with them her travels to other parts of Canada, to New York and to such places as Malaysia and Belarus. Her travel tales offer not only her keen observations on what she sees and experiences while away, but also her perspective from afar on the importance of having a place to return to that truly is home. Anny has owned Glamorgan Farm since 2000. Located in North Saanich, B.C., it's one of the original farms and homesteads on Vancouver Island, established in 1870 by Richard John. She is restoring the historic structures and raising heritage breeds of livestock. The front meadows are gardened by an herb gardener and a group of mentally challenged adults who grow organic, heirloom varieties of flowers and produce. Anny writes candidly and colourfully about real things, from visits with her family-she is the daughter of internationally acclaimed artists Molly Lamb Bobak and Bruno Bobak-to simple pleasures like arranging bowls of pears and hearing the owls in the woods at dusk. She writes about making bonfires, sitting with a dying horse, playing with a 700-pound sow and visiting the SPCA. Some of her tales are told with humour, some in sadness, but all tell the truth about living, observing and creating, whether at home or away.

“An even-handed and stunning portrayal” of the little known street soccer tournament that brings together the homeless of the world (PopMatters). In 2008, Dave Bidini accompanies Homeless Team Canada to the Homeless World Cup—an annual street soccer tournament with goals unlike any other: the most important of which is to create life-changing opportunities for the millions of homeless people worldwide. In Melbourne, Australia, Bidini watches team members play and shares the disappointments, frustrations, joys, and triumphs of forty-five-year-old Billy, who is a former addict; the quick-footed twenty-four-year-old Moroccan immigrant Juventus, who refuses to talk about his past; and most of all, the endearing teenaged Krystal, who carries a photograph of her long-dead mother and dreams of a better life. Bidini begins to understand what this tournament means to all those involved. He sees firsthand the power sports have to transform the lives of those on the edge—how the decision to play this game can mean the difference between survival and heading down a road of addiction, poverty, or crime. Home and Away offers a powerful look at the poor and dispossessed, from the barrios of Mexico City and the shanties of West Africa to the streets of North America and Europe, illuminating the renewed meaning that these players find in such an inspiring game.

David French, potential independent candidate for the 2016 presidential election, and his wife Nancy deliver a powerful story of what happens when a person--or rather, a family--answers the call to serve their nation. David French picked up the newspaper in the comfort of his penthouse in Philadelphia, and read about a soldier - father of two - who was wounded in Iraq. Immediately, he was stricken with a question: Why him and not me? David was a 37-year-old father of two, a Harvard Law graduate and president of a free speech organization. In other words, he was used to pushing pencils, not toting M16s. His wife Nancy was raising two children and writing from home. She was worrying about field trips and playdates, not about her husband going to war. HOME AND AWAY chronicles not just a soldier at war, but a family at war - a husband in Iraq, a wife and children at home, greeting each day with hope and fear, facing the challenge with determination, tears, and more than a little joy.

Although I have penned the odd verse since I was a youngster, I started writing regularly when I married. For the past forty-three years, I have composed for my wife Marion a poem for our anniversary, her birthday on the following day and for Valentines Day. She calls me a dreamy romantic, and I probably am, but I don’t apologise for it. The tradition has progressed so that I usually provide a piece for birthdays of my family, occasionally for friends, and also for special occasions. These have been my main inspiration. Two other stimuli act as my muse: a love of travel and a love of Nature. Professionally and on vacation, I have travelled widely, and on all modes of transport. I am not particularly knowledgeable about Nature, but I love observing the cycle of the seasons and their effect on birds and small animals in the area where I live.

An Indian-born foreign service officer killed in the U.S. embassy bombing in Nairobi, Kenya. An Austrian-born doctor who volunteered her medical skills in Japan, South Vietnam, and Iran. A French-speaking woman from a remote village in Gabon. These are just three of the women whose stories are told in this book-women born in other countries who, through their marriages to American diplomats, became representatives of the United States. While they experience immigrant life in a unique way, they share the challenges faced by other women in cross-cultural marriages away from their own countries.
