As I travel around the United States and Canada as a safety consultant and motivational speaker for schools, colleges, universities, and private industry, I am amazed at the information found on cooking located in bookstores and restaurants. Why write a book about popcorn? Because I love popcorn, but more importantly, like a student in a classroom, I had a need to learn more about one of my favorite snacks. This book does more than just explain how to pop corn. This book can be used by teachers as a history lesson and be used in home economics, science classes, math classes, agricultural classrooms, etc. Hopefully, this book will be used as another fun tool to educate children. Everyone loves popcorn! It is my hope that you enjoy this book.

"She's the female Nicholas Sparks." — Redbook magazine Following her bestselling debut novel Come Away with Me, Karma Brown returns with an unforgettable story that explores the intricate dynamics of friendship and parenthood Hannah and Kate became friends in the fifth grade, when Hannah hit a boy for looking up Kate's skirt with a mirror. While they've been close as sisters ever since, Hannah can't help but feel envious of the little family Kate and her husband, David, have created—complete with two perfect little girls. She and Ben have been trying for years to have a baby, so when they receive the news that she will likely never get pregnant, Hannah's heartbreak is overwhelming. But just as they begin to tentatively explore the other options, it's Kate's turn to do the rescuing. Not only does she offer to be Hannah's surrogate, but Kate is willing to use her own eggs to do so. Full of renewed hope, excitement and gratitude, these two families embark on an incredible journey toward parenthood…until a devastating tragedy puts everything these women have worked toward at risk of falling apart. Poignant and refreshingly honest, The Choices We Make is a powerful tale of an incredible friendship and the risks we take to make our dreams come true.

"This book begins by pushing back on the kind of rote routines that lack opportunities for reasoning (like the calendar) that teachers often use in early childhood and primary classrooms. Instead, the author offers innovations on old routines and some new routines that encourage reasoning, argumentation, and the development of important math ideas. She focuses on using math routines in playful ways with your children. See chapter titles for the different routines featured in the book"--

Bruce Delamitri makes movies about killers. Great movies, stylish movies. Bruce's movies are hip. Post-modern cinematic milestones, dripping with ironic juxtaposition. His killers are style icons. They walk cool; they talk cool. Getting shot by one of them would be a fashion statement. Enter Wayne and Scout. Real killers. Appalling, demented maniacs who kill people they do not know. Popcorn by Ben Elton is an international success, prevailing at number one for five weeks on London's Sunday Times bestseller list. This taut and darkly funny novel also poses a serious question: In a society addicted to murder, is there anything such as a responsible person?

Doubt is Their Product

"Doubt is our product," a cigarette executive once observed, "since it is the best means of competing with the 'body of fact' that exists in the minds of the general public. It is also the means of establishing a controversy." In this eye-opening expose, David Michaels reveals how the tobacco industry's duplicitous tactics spawned a multimillion dollar industry that is dismantling public health safeguards. Product defense consultants, he argues, have increasingly skewed the scientific literature, manufactured and magnified scientific uncertainty, and influenced policy decisions to the advantage of polluters and the manufacturers of dangerous products. To keep the public confused about the hazards posed by global warming, second-hand smoke, asbestos, lead, plastics, and many other toxic materials, industry executives have hired unscrupulous scientists and lobbyists to dispute scientific evidence about health risks. In doing so, they have not only delayed action on specific hazards, but they have constructed barriers to make it harder for lawmakers, government agencies, and courts to respond to future threats. The Orwellian strategy of dismissing research conducted by the scientific community as "junk science" and elevating science conducted by product defense specialists to "sound science" status also creates confusion about the very nature of scientific inquiry and undermines the public's confidence in science's ability to address public health and environmental concerns Such reckless practices have long existed, but Michaels argues that the Bush administration deepened the dysfunction by virtually handing over regulatory agencies to the very corporate powers whose products and behavior they are charged with overseeing. In Doubt Is Their Product Michaels proves, beyond a doubt, that our regulatory system has been broken. He offers concrete, workable suggestions for how it can be restored by taking the politics out of science and ensuring that concern for public safety, rather than private profits, guides our regulatory policy. Many believe there is nothing like seeing a good movie, one that is enjoyable both in itself and for the thought processes it stimulates. From The Usual Suspects and When Harry Met Sally to Gandhi and The Color Purple, this handbook functions as a guide to watching and reflecting upon 75 great films. The author, a philosophy instructor, presents a text designed to lead readers through a series of intellectual gymnastics; to help strengthen critical thinking abilities and to inspire exciting and philosophical thoughts and discussions. “Civil Disobedience,” “Death,” “Fate and Determinism,” “War,” “Sexism and Women’s Issues,” “Gay Rights,” “The Greatest Happiness Principle,” “Anxiety and Inauthenticity” and “The Holocaust” are examples of the 18 different categories into which the films are divided. Each chapter includes the author’s introductory comments to be read prior to watching movies along with a section of “Questions to Ponder” to be considered afterward. Photographs of many movie scenes are included throughout the text. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Hugely acclaimed author of THIS IS UNCOOL and FEAR OF MUSIC turns his attention to rock 'n' roll movies. From BLACKBOARD JUNGLE to QUADROPHENIA, from 8 MILE to ABBA: THE MOVIE, no one has seriously looked at the strange phenomenon that is the rock 'n' roll movie. Garry Mulholland turns his focus away from classic records to the best, the worst, the weird and the completely deranged from the world of the rock movie. Part serious critical appreciation, part celebration of B-movie trash, Garry Mulholland's inclusive approach is the key to his success. He is as comfortable deconstructing the likes of PERFORMANCE, GIMME SHELTER or JUBILEE as he is celebrating FOOTLOOSE or JAILHOUSE ROCK. As he writes: '... Anyone who rejects the joy that the likes of GREASE or DIRTY DANCING or FAME have brought millions of people without even attempting to engage with why such unapologetic trash works can't really be that interested in filmgoers at all.'
