The Phenomenon of Studio Goldsmithing When the history of art in the 1980s is written, much of it will be etched in gold. This is the time of the contemporary goldsmith, an artist who chooses to work in precious metals rather than oils or marble. The contemporary jeweler-as-artist has only recently become a re cognized force. With rare exceptions, the whole field is little more than thirty years old. But it is only within the past fifteen years that these jewelers have entered the jewelry mainstream. The phenomenon of contemporary goldsmithing embraces an eclectic group of artists, each with a unique vision, each taking a per sonal path to jewelry producing. They have as little relationship to the typical, mass-produced jewelry as a champagne maker has to a bottler of orange soda. They approach a piece of art, not a piece of metal. The work is personal and a perfect expression of the "back to the land" movement that spawned it. Many of these goldsmiths were looking not merely for a way to make a living but for a way to make a life that was worthy of living. Running a business while trying to remain a creative metalsmith at the same time is the ongoing challenge. The jeweler-artists have solved or resolved these often conflicting needs in slightly different ways and in a beautiful variety of techniques and styles. Their meth ods, their growth, and their work are discussed here.

She battles lost love, guilt, and remorse due to a regretful past, as she struggles to navigate her life onto safer paths. Jennifer was born in Norway in 1966 to an acclaimed international supermodel and a mediocre musician. The result of a one night stand, her parents tie the knot in an attempt to save face, but soon discover that family and the local media are unforgiving. They escape to America. Raised in Beverly Hills by jet-setter parents and deprived of parental love and attention, Jennifer is angry at the world. To clear their minds and organize their ideas, artists will often start projects by drawing sketches. Drawing asks why artists and designers use drawing in that way to kick-start their creative thinking, considering the application of drawing and its various uses across disciplines. From the interdisciplinary perspectives of archaeology, jewelry design, illustration, and landscape architecture, this innovative volume highlights how drawing is used in the professional world. With examples from both contemporary and historical contexts, Drawing will be an invaluable resource for practitioners and scholars seeking a rationale for why we draw.

Two Turtle Doves is the story of a life spent making things. Growing up in 1970s Suffolk in a crumbling giant of a house with wild, tangled gardens, Alex Monroe was left to wreak havoc by invention. Without visible parental influence, but with sisters to love him and brothers to fight for him, he made nature into his world. Creation became a compulsion, whether it was go-carts and guns, cross-bows and booby-traps, boats, bikes or scooters. And then, it was jewellery. From full-out warfare waged against the local schoolboys to the freedom found in daredevil Raleigh bike antics to the delicacies of dress-making and the most intricate designs for jewellery, Two Turtle Doves traces the intimate journey of how an idea is transformed from a fleeting thought into an exquisite piece of jewellery. It is about where we find our creativity, how we remember and why we make the things we do.
