Not even Kaspian himself knows precisely what happened to him during his unaccounted-for ninety-six hours -- though he does remember a light, three evil leprechauns, his dead father, and a frighteningly seductive angel-like being. The adults who control the sullen, disaffected teenager's immediate destiny view his disappearance -- and his silence about it -- as acts of passive-aggressive rebellion to be nipped in the proverbial bud. But Kaspian believes his memories and emotions are precious treasures belonging to him alone. Now he must staunchly defend them from his born-again stepmother, a megalomaniacal alternate education tsar, sexually ambiguous counselors, corrupt Washington politicos, and wacko ufo abduction theorists. Recent events suggest that the laws of what's possible on this living Earth are constantly changing. And Kaspian must find his own way into the heart of the Great Mystery.

In late 1937, a young German lieutenant, Oskar Langweil, is recruited to help overthrow Adolf Hitler. An exiled childhood friend introduces him to Lena, another expat and an avowed Socialist, and they contrive to pose as husband and wife to cross the Atlantic aboard a cruise ship crowded with Nazis. But once at sea they become entangled with the feckless son of a U.S. senator, as well as the mysterious SS officer assigned to watch over him, and after docking in Bremerhaven their luck lurches from bad to worse. Now, along with these unexpected companions, they become prey in a manhunt that drives them through the Third Reich—Oskar cut off from his circle of resistance and constantly re-evaluating whom he can trust. From the sordid cabarets of Berlin to glittering parties in Washington, D.C., from the slums of Kreuzberg to a remote Alpine lodge, Richard Grant populates a world on the brink of disappearing with a cast that also includes an evil genius of Nazism, a White Russian princess, a stage artist vampire, an aging brigadier, and a disgraced journalist. A tour de force of historical espionage, Cave Dwellers is a suspenseful, darkly comic, and exhilarating novel in which everyone is playing for the highest stakes imaginable.

The A to Z of Fantasy Literature

Once upon a time all literature was fantasy, set in a mythical past when magic existed, animals talked, and the gods took an active hand in earthly affairs. As the mythical past was displaced in Western estimation by the historical past and novelists became increasingly preoccupied with the present, fantasy was temporarily marginalized until the late 20th century, when it enjoyed a spectacular resurgence in every stratum of the literary marketplace. Stableford provides an invaluable guide to this sequence of events and to the current state of the field. The chronology tracks the evolution of fantasy from the origins of literature to the 21st century. The introduction explains the nature of the impulses creating and shaping fantasy literature, the problems of its definition and the reasons for its changing historical fortunes. The dictionary includes cross-referenced entries on more than 700 authors, ranging across the entire historical spectrum, while more than 200 other entries describe the fantasy subgenres, key images in fantasy literature, technical terms used in fantasy criticism, and the intimately convoluted relationship between literary fantasies, scholarly fantasies, and lifestyle fantasies. The book concludes with an extensive bibliography that ranges from general textbooks and specialized accounts of the history and scholarship of fantasy literature, through bibliographies and accounts of the fantasy literature of different nations, to individual author studies and useful websites.

Long ago, an evil wizard sold his soul to the devil in exchange for supreme power. He betrayed and murdered his fellow wizards as he built an army of half-demon, half-animal overlords that marched against the forces of Videnland. The Knights of Videnland rode against this evil, along with the last remaining great wizards of their time. The forces of good exiled the evil wizard to another dimension and were victorious. This campaign became legendary, as did the heroes of that time. Now, many years later, the war has been all but forgotten. All that remains are the stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. However, the evil wizard that once threatened the land has found a way out of his prison. Renewing his war upon the realm, all that stands in his way are an old wizard and three young warriors who are destined to become legends themselves. The times ahead will determine the fate of each of these young men, who find themselves championing the fight against evil and are thrown in the middle of an epic conflict. Non-stop battle keep the action in high gear, including an amphibious assault on the Elven kingdom, a dragon-led siege on the Dwarven stronghold, and demon gladiators fighting to the death.

In Chapter 1 the methodological principles of systemization and visualization of multidimensional ecological information for its operational dissemination among potential users are stated. Their realization results in creation of the geographic-and ecologic model of marine basin as an information base for diagnosis of the marine ecosystem state, estimation of consequences of economic activity, and modelling of its changes with the use of mathematical tools. In Chapter 2 the geographic-and-ecological aspects of mathematical modelling of marine ecosystems, the possibilities and peculiarities of the most adequate models, the Russian hydrodynamic model of oil spills "SPILLMOD" and hydroecological model of organogenic compound transformation in the sea, are investigated. In the following six Chapters the examples of practical realization of geographic-and-ecological (as information source) and mathematical (as computing apparatus) modelling at the investigations of specific ecological problems associated with consequences of natural hazards and economic activity on aquatory and within the whole Black Sea basin are given.

In the tradition of Cod and Olives: a fascinating journey into the hidden history, culture, and commerce of caviar. Once merely a substitute for meat during religious fasts, today caviar is an icon of luxury and wealth. In Caviar, Inga Saffron tells, for the first time, the story of how the virgin eggs of the prehistoric-looking, bottom-feeding sturgeon were transformed from a humble peasant food into a czar’s delicacy–and ultimately a coveted status symbol for a rising middle class. She explores how the glistening black eggs became the epitome of culinary extravagance, while taking us on a revealing excursion into the murky world of caviar on the banks of the Volga River and Caspian Sea in Russia, the Elbe in Europe, and the Hudson and Delaware Rivers in the United States. At the same time, Saffron describes the complex industry caviar has spawned, illustrating the unfortunate consequences of mass marketing such a rare commodity. The story of caviar has long been one of conflict, crisis, extravagant claims, and colorful characters, such as the Greek sea captain who first discovered the secret method of transporting the perishable delicacy to Europe, the canny German businessmen who encountered a wealth of untapped sturgeon in American waters, the Russian Communists who created a sophisticated cartel to market caviar to an affluent Western clientele, the dirt-poor poachers who eked out a living from sturgeon in the aftermath of the Soviet collapse and the “caviar Mafia” that has risen in their wake, and the committed scientists who sacrificed their careers to keep caviar on our tables. Filled with lore and intrigue, Caviar is a captivating work of culinary, natural, and cultural history.
