Service-Learning has proved to be a powerful and practical methodology and tool with far-reaching implications. Benefits have included increased civic engagement, enhanced sense of purpose, greater feeling of fulfillment, nurtured creativity, and promotion of problem-solving skills and social responsibility as traditional classrooms have moved to the communities and students have become service providers and learners. The purpose of this work is to improve service learning research and practice through strengthening its theoretical base. Contributing authors include both well-known and emerging service learning and community engagement scholars, as well as scholars from other fields. The authors bring theoretical perspectives from a wide variety of disciplines to bear as they critically review past research, describe assessment methods and instruments, develop future research agendas, and consider implications of theory-based research for enhanced practice. This volume, 2B, opens with chapters focused on defining the criteria for quality research. It then addresses community development, and the role of nonprofit organizations in service learning. It focusses on institutions, examining the institutionalization of service learning, engaged departments, and institutional leadership. The focus of this book is on the ways in which service learning and multicultural education can and should be integrated so that each may be strengthened and consequently have greater effect on educational and social conditions. It offers a significant attempt to forge a dialogue among practitioners of service learning and multicultural education. The overriding theme is that service learning without a focused attention to the complexity of racial and cultural differences can reinforce the dominant cultural ideology, but academic work that seeks to deconstruct these norms without providing a community-based touchstone isolates students and schools from the realities of the larger communities of which they are part. Although the chapter authors provide varied perspectives on the benefits and challenges of integrating multicultural education and service learning, they all are committed to a vision of education that synthesizes both action and reflection. None of the authors pretend to have all the answers to what this integration should look like, nor do they believe that today's social problems are easily ameliorated through education. Rather, they share theories, practices, failures, and triumphs in order to further the conversation about the importance of aligning what educators say about the world and how they act in and on it. These authors share the view that multicultural education is truly transformative for students only when it includes a community action component, and likewise, service learning is truly a catalyst for change only when it is done from a multicultural and socially just perspective. It is their hope that the ideas explored in this book will further the work of those who share a commitment to the integration of action and reflection.

Social justice and leadership education are inextricably linked. In order to move social justice forward, we need to develop leaders with knowledge, skills, and values to engage effectively in the leadership process. We need socially just leaders now more than ever. At a time when our elected and appointed officials agree on very little, our communities are divided and distrustful of one another, and individual citizens struggle for fairness in the face of discrimination, society is at a crossroad. In one direction lies the reproduction of oppression and marginalization, continued distrust, and further fragmentation. In the other, a route toward healing, compassion, and fairness. How then do we prepare our leaders of tomorrow to walk the path of justice rather than take the road to ruin? Changing the dominant narratives in society involves preparing skilled social critics and knowledgeable advocates for positive and sustainable change through education. However, when leadership education fails to consider social justice issues, or when social justice education omits leadership learning, both fall short of their goals. This texts links issues of social justice, equity, and equality, to leadership knowledge, skills, and values, with the intent of offering theoretical, practical, and policy recommendations to improve the work of educators charged with preparing undergraduates for the complexities of leadership in all its forms. Collectively, the contributors inform much needed practices and pedagogies toward socially just leadership education. No single one of us can change the narrative alone, but together, we can amplify the voices of those leading toward justice. Adolescent risk behavior is a growing problem in the global context. In many places, efforts are carried out to prevent the occurrence of adolescent risk behavior and to identify the best intervention options. In view of the growing magnitude of adolescent risk behavior, one question is how we can explain such behavior. Traditionally, people tend to find answers within adolescents. Explanations such as weak mindedness, lack of determination and laziness have been shared in people in different cultures. While these beliefs are widely held, there is no scientific support for such explanations. Fundamentally, promotion of psychosocial competencies is at the heart of positive youth development and psychosocial competence is closely related to leadership skills in adolescents. In view of the developmental issues faced by Chinese university students and taking advantage of higher education reform in Hong Kong, a subject entitled Tomorrows Leaders is offered to around 2,000 students every year. Based on our evaluation of this project, we strongly encourage colleagues to make similar initiatives elsewhere to create leadership for the future.
