Few tropical ecosystems have been subjected to multi-disciplinary investigations as broad and exhaustive as those carried out on the Ilha de Maraca, a riverine island in the Brazilian Amazon. This diverse and remarkable ecological reserve, in Brazil s northernmost Amazon state of Roraima, includes environments and habitats ranging from rainforests and semi-deciduous forests to natural savannas, lakes, rivers and palm swamps. These have been subjected to an in-depth international scientific study whose primary aim was to undertake one of the most detailed ecological surveys ever conducted in Amazonia. The results of this enormous body of research, involving the collaborative fieldwork of some 200 workers, span the reserve s geology, geomorphology, botany, zoology, phenology, soils, limnology, ecology and historical human occupation. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The Index Kewensis was first published in two volumes between 1893 and 185, and its five-yearly supplements have long been established as a standard work of reference. The Index lists the place of publication of new and changed names of seed-bearing plants. Until 1970, only the ranks of genus and species were included. Since 1971, all ranks from family downwards have been listed. The closing date for this supplement was the end of December 1990. Also included is a list of the new generic names from the main body arranged in alphabetical order under family headings. The Index Kewensis is the most authoritative and comprehensive work of its kind, and is the indispensable reference for botanists conducting pure and applied research.
