Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart [what a mouthful for a little dog] or Motezy, as we called him, was a beautiful buff Cocker Spaniel. He was given to me by my daughter, Kathy. He was about eight months old, an adorable ball of fluff, with the biggest brown eyes and big floppy ears. We just couldn't help showering him with hugs and kisses. In 1987, my husband, Ray, and I moved to Utah. Motezy was almost a year old. I was writing letters to my son who lived in California, but soon they became very boring. What was there to write about? Fall is in the air. The leaves are turning to beautiful hues of gold, orange and brown. The frost is on the pumpkin. Nothing I wrote sounded interesting to me. I looked at Motezy and asked, "Why don't you write to your old buddy Pat?" He looked at me with that quizzical expression, the look I have seen so often.

The Cluster and Phoenix Missions

Cluster was one of the two missions - the other being the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) - constituting the Solar Terrestrial Science Programme (STSP), the first `cornerstone' of ESA's Horizon 2000 Programme. After the catastrophic Ariane-5 accident on 4 June 1996 which destroyed the four Cluster spacecraft, the European Space Agency Science Programme Committee gave approval to refurbish the spare Cluster spacecraft and make it ready for flight. This new spacecraft, considered to be the first of a new fleet, is called Phoenix. In the meantime various options to repeat the Cluster four-point measurements are being studied. Since Phoenix, as the fifth Cluster spacecraft, will be equipped with the spare Cluster experiments, the instrumentation articles in this book are still appropriate to the new mission. Furthermore, the objectives of the recovery mission, the ground systems, the ground observation program and the theory and modelling efforts all remain unchanged. Thus this series of articles will continue to be essential to the Cluster community and to the general scientific community as the recovery mission is implemented.

The products of a series of encounters characterized by the negotiation of the desires of artist and sitter, ingriste portraits did not only exist in the rarefied realm of the atelier. The women portrayed included key participants in the artistic and social culture of Ingres's studio, including Julie Mottez, Marie d'Agoult, and Rachel [Elisabeth Rachel Felix]. Charting the convergence of aesthetic investments on the part of artists and noteworthy women subjects around the terms of monumental solidity and 'antiquity,' I demonstrate that operations of emulation exceeded the bounds of the (male) community of Ingres's students and the images of women they produced, and were shaped by the identities of women sitters as salonnieres, art critics, artists and aesthetic interlocutors. This project thereby traces the history of portraits of women within an atelier setting whose 'culture' was not limited to the space of the studio itself, or to the male artists who occupied it.

The Holocaust s Jewish Calendars

“The most comprehensive to date treatment of these precious artifacts of the Holocaust’s Jewish efforts to maintain religious observations and identity.” —Choice Calendars map time, shaping and delineating our experience of it. While the challenges to tracking Jewish conceptions of time during the Holocaust were substantial, Alan Rosen reveals that many took great risks to mark time within that vast upheaval. Rosen inventories and organizes Jewish calendars according to the wartime settings in which they were produced—from Jewish communities to ghettos and concentration camps. The calendars he considers reorient views of Jewish circumstances during the war and show how Jews were committed to fashioning traditional guides to daily life, even in the most extreme conditions. In a separate chapter, moreover, he elucidates how Holocaust-era diaries sometimes served as surrogate Jewish calendars. All in all, Rosen presents a revised idea of time, continuity, the sacred and the mundane, the ordinary and the extraordinary even when death and destruction were the order of the day. Rosen’s focus on the Jewish calendar—the ultimate symbol of continuity, as weekday follows weekday and Sabbath follows Sabbath—sheds new light on how Jews maintained connections to their way of conceiving time even within the cauldron of the Holocaust. “Rosen demonstrates the relationship between time and meaning, between meaning and holiness, between holy days and the divine presence―all of which came under assault in the Nazis’ effort to kill Jewish souls before destroying Jewish bodies.” —David Patterson, author of Along the Edge of Annihilation: The Collapse and Recovery of Life in the Holocaust Diary
