Young adult literature featuring teenage lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning characters is fast growing in popularity. Unlike the "problem novels" of the past, which focused on the guilt, bullying and isolation of LGBTQ characters, today's narratives present more sympathetic and celebratory portrayals. The author explores a selection of recent novels--many of which may be new to readers--and places them in the wider contexts of LGBTQ literature and history. Chapters discuss a range of topics, including the relationship of Queer Theory to literature, LGBTQ families, and recent trends in utopian and dystopian science fiction.

What if you came home for Thanksgiving and your family home had disappeared? Picture this: You started your first year at university a couple months ago and you haven't been home since. You miss your parents, but you've learned a lot about yourself living away. Your family was accepting when you came out queer, but everything's different now that you're questioning your gender identity too. Even if you can work up the nerve to tell your parents, will they ever understand? That's the least of your concerns when you get home to find your house isn't there. It's just... gone! The neighbours have no idea who you are. What happened to your family? How can you find them? And does anyone remember the way things used to be? A Paranormal LGBTQ Young Adult Novelette

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: The level of tolerance towards all types of Otherness has increased during the past years, there is still discrimination against anything other than heterosexuality. Especially in schools, sexual and gender differences are seldom addressed and if, they are presented as deviant sexual behaviour. Teachers often lack professional competences and they even resist to address LGBTQ issues. As a consequence, homophobia and heterosexism are present in many classrooms which can affect both learning and teaching negatively. The problem of heterosexism is also related to the foreign language classroom. Both in coursebooks as well as in literature students are often confronted with heteronormative representations and characters. Placing emphasis on this problem, I will take the LGBTQ-themed young adult novel Will Grayson Will Grayson by David Levithan and John Green into consideration and aim to prove that this novel is a good way to challenge students believes and perspectives about sexual and gender differences and to counter and normalize homophobia in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. To achieve this goal, I have organized my term paper into three main sections, each having two subsections.

Are the Kids All Right by B.J. Epstein is the first survey of English-language children’s literature that feature lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or otherwise queer characters. It explores how LGBTQ characters are portrayed and what this says about contemporary society. The author covers picture books, middle-grade books, young adult fiction and includes an annotated bibliography. Epstein explores why sex, sexuality and gender non-conformity is something that many writers and publishers of children’s and young adult lit appear to shy away from. She passionately demonstrates that the information children get from literature matters, and that so called ‘difficult’ topics can be communicated in entertaining and informative ways.

This landmark volume is the first to bring together leading scholarship on children’s and young adult literature from three intersecting disciplines: Education, English, and Library and Information Science. Distinguished by its multidisciplinary approach, it describes and analyzes the different aspects of literary reading, texts, and contexts to illuminate how the book is transformed within and across different academic figurations of reading and interpreting children’s literature. Part one considers perspectives on readers and reading literature in home, school, library, and community settings. Part two introduces analytic frames for studying young adult novels, picturebooks, indigenous literature, graphic novels, and other genres. Chapters include commentary on literary experiences and creative production from renowned authors and illustrators. Part three focuses on the social contexts of literary study, with chapters on censorship, awards, marketing, and literary museums. The singular contribution of this Handbook is to lay the groundwork for colleagues across disciplines to redraw the map of their separately figured worlds, thus to enlarge the scope of scholarship and dialogue as well as push ahead into uncharted territory.
