Along my journey to where I am now Ive took countless losses from some of my friends getting incarcerated to losing close friends/family in tragic deaths. Throughout middle school and high school I wrote these series of writings to express what Ive seen and been through and to give others a close glimpse of the life the typical young black male faces within my town of Hollywood. Forever Young: The Science of Aging by the Editors of Scientific American Today, an infant born in the US will probably live to see his or her 78th birthday, a 20- year-plus increase over the average lifespan a century ago. While living well into the 80s and 90s is becoming more and more attainable, how many more years can humanity expect to gain? The two main barriers are accumulated damage to cells and organs that occurs over time and age-related illnesses like cancer and Alzheimer's disease. Researchers are divided over where to pour their efforts, and in this eBook, Forever Young: The Science of Aging we take a look at what science knows—and what it's striving to learn—about the aging process. Both genes and environment influence how long people live and how "well" they age, as discussed in Section 1, "A Matter of Time: The Aging Process." The eBook opens with "Why Can't We Live Forever," where author Thomas Kirkwood explains exactly why by way of his "disposable soma" theory. Other theories of how we age, including the role of telomeres, free radicals and caloric restriction, are discussed in subsequent sections. Recent studies have called into question long-held beliefs about the anti-aging benefits of antioxidants and reducing caloric intake. Though there are a number of age-related illnesses, few are so devastating as Alzheimer's disease, covered in its own section. While there's still no cure, a slew of clinical drug trials is underway. Finally, we examine the quest for longevity, featuring stories on both life-extension research and lifestyle choices. In particular, "Fit Body, Fit Mind?" looks at how to prevent age-related mental decline by staying physically fit and socially involved. So while there's no miracle pill on the horizon that will extend our lives to 150, we can certainly make the most of the years we do have.

The Forever Young program is the scientifically based plan that will bring your life back into synch with your genetic identity, restoring your youthful vigor and glow, while at the same time optimizing your health, quality of life, and longevity." --James O'Keefe, MD and Joan O'Keefe, RD In a field plagued by "miracle" diets and sketchy information, The Forever Young Diet and Lifestyle presents a commonsense plan that improves satiety; promotes wholesome, fresh, and easily obtained foods; and reinforces a rational, holistic, mind-body approach to diet and lifestyle. The program is a complete package that can help provide a lifetime of energy and good health. Most of our health problems today result from a mismatch between the world we are designed for and the very different one in which we live. The modern American leading a sedentary lifestyle of automobiles, couches, televisions, computers, and junk food is like a fish out of water. Our genes have changed minimally over the past few thousand years, yet our diets and lifestyles have become progressively more divergent from those of our ancient ancestors. The Forever Young Diet and Lifestyle outlines the path back to our natural needs and rhythms. Firmly grounded in the medically proven Hunter-Gatherer diet, the plan easily promotes weight loss, vastly improves energy levels, enhances sleep and concentration, and restores the natural youthful glow we should have at any age. Cardiologist James O'Keefe and his wife, Joan, a registered dietitian, provide a down-to-earth, sensible program that's both satisfying and easy to follow.

What it takes to save the world from extinction. 200 years from now, the world, in the grip of global warming, is eerily like ours, only much worse. The ultra-rich, a.k.a. the One Percenters, live in protected areas while the rest of humanity faces pollution, plagues and early death. The One Percenters are the only ones who can afford all the advances of technology, in particular the exclusive Age Prevention Program (APP) that lets them live their whole life span looking "forever young" till the day they drop dead. Three friends struggling for survival, Lizzie, a young California golf champion, Jamie, an investigative journalist for the World and US Post and Alice, a lovely Swiss nurse, try to enter the APP. Meanwhile Lizzie's uncle, a determined and ruthless 99 Percenter retired from the military, lurks around, hell-bent on carving a place for himself in the APP. Only two options are open to escape extinction: one, fly to another planet a thousand light years away, pristine and green much like Earth before industrialization - but the so-called “Immortality Trip” is reserved to One Percenters; the other, retreat to Antarctica, the last virgin continent - but it is in the hands of Gary Trude XIII, a Hitlerian-style autocrat. Can Lizzie, Jamie and Alice escape from Gary Trude and join the Immortality Trip? NOTE TO THE READER: This book follows the model of serialized novels and is digitally published in four separate parts, each self-standing. It is however preferable to read them in order and the present book is an omnibus edition that includes all four parts. PART ONE, "Gateway to Forever", explores the costly APP and what it means to belong to it...or remain outside.

The excessive worship of adolescence and its social empowerment by adult institutions is the deeply rooted cause of a serious cultural malaise. So argues semiotician Marcel Danesi in Forever Young, an unforgiving and controversial look at modern culture's incessant drive to create a 'teen-aging' of adult life. Written for the general reader and based on five year's worth of interviews with over 200 adolescents and their parents, Danesi begins by asserting that one of the early causes of this crystallization of adolescence as an age category can be traced back to theories of psychology at the turn of the twentieth century. Since then, the psychological view of adolescence as a stressful period of adjustment has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. This, in tandem with the devaluation of the family by the media and society at large, has led to a maturity gap - a fissure in family dynamics that is eagerly and ably exploited by the mass media. Unlike many academic digressions into the malaise of modern culture, Forever Young provides concrete answers on how the 'forever young syndrome' can be addressed. One solution is to dispel the myth that experts and professionals are the people best equipped to give advice on raising children. The second is to recognize the value of family, in all its different combinations, as the primary institution of child-rearing. The third is to challenge the pervasive notion that teen culture is a sophisticated endeavour - that, for example, pop music can claim to have produced some of the best musical art in the world, surpassing Mozart or Bach. By laying bare the misguided tenets that have brought about, and continue to promote, a 'forever young' mentality, Marcel Danesi demonstrates that the 'teen-aging' of culture has come about because it is, simply put, good for business. Teen tastes have achieved cultural supremacy because the western economic system requires a conformist and easily manipulated market, and has thus joined forces with the media-entertainment oligarchy to promote a deterministic 'forever young' market.

Forever Young offers a wide-ranging survey of the notion of longevity, from antiquity to the present. The author looks at the many manifestations of one of humanity’s most powerful dreams: the prolongation of life and youth with immortality as a final objective. Using a variety of sources – religion, folk traditions, science, literature and art – the book shows on the one hand the persistence of the human spirit (the desire for longevity is revealed as an extremely stable archetype throughout history) and on the other, the innovations specific to each period or culture due to the progress of science and differing ideologies and attitudes. Nowadays, prolonging life and youth has become a major goal of society due to a combination of several factors: the spectacular increase in life expectancy; the advances of science and especially genetics; and, finally, the decline of religious belief in life after death, emphasizing the only remaining certainty – corporeal life. The author, a specialist in mythology and imagination, approaches his subject in an accessible and engaging way.

In the space of one breath, Robbie is launched from his plan to attend community college while living at home with his mom and saving up for a car to the tender yet passionate exploration of intense first love. Little does Robbie know… Brought across during the height of the Civil War, Colt has remained trapped in the body of a lonely seventeen year old. When he spots the slim, blond-haired, blue eyed young man, pushing a line of shopping carts across a parking lot, Colt knows instantly they’re destined for each other. There’s just one major problem: if he survives the impending battle between vampires and the Matarians - an army of brutal vampire slayers - he’s going to live forever. Robbie isn’t…
