55% OFF FOR BOOKSTORES Why do diets fail sooner or later? Well, precisely because they are diets, intended as "calorie restrictions". In fact, the human being is unable to follow a diet low in calories (that's Science). This is because our brains are designed to store as many calories as possible, and during the hunter-gatherer era, this made the difference between life and death. "Today there is food, but who knows tomorrow..." Today the situation has drastically changed: we have plenty of food on every street corner, but guess what? Our brain is still the same. It hasn't evolved, which is why ALL diets don't work (yeah, it's simple as that). To really lose weight there is only one thing that works: don't go on a diet, but change your LIFESTYLE! And the Mediterranean Diet has been judged by doctors around the world to be the best lifestyle ever. No calorie restrictions, great food, and balanced combinations... so why not give it a try? This cookbook is the must-have guide for those who want to approach the Mediterranean diet for the first time. Start improving your health and your shape from now. Let today be "day 1". Mediterranean food is the home cooking of many local cultures, a way of cooking derived from generous people, rustic foods, and simple pleasures. Its clear, robust flavors and uncomplicated preparations have made it a favorite of Americans and have earned it an honored place in our culinary tradition. What makes Mediterranean vegetable cookery so wonderful is the way its ingredients have been combined to create a host of delicious dishes virtually unknown until now in American kitchens. Vegetables are high on the list of foods we all want to eat more of, and we're always looking for new ways to prepare them. With Mediterranean Vegetables, a masterful A-to-Z culinary reference and cookbook, Mediterranean food expert Clifford A. Wright gives us a new world of great tastes. Never before has such a wealth of information on vegetables of the Mediterranean been collected in one place. Each entry describes a vegetable and its varieties, explains its origins and its culinary history from ancient times right up through the present, and details how to grow and harvest is and where to buy it. Included are many vegetables that you may use every day, such as spinach, carrots, peppers, and tomatoes, as well as those you regularly see in markets but are unsure how to prepare, such as celeriac, kohlrabi, and taro. There are also those that you can easily cultivate in your garden or find growing wild, such as borage and garden cress. The countries that border the Mediterranean Sea are exotic and diverse, as is their multitude of vegetable preparations. These 200 recipes, incorporated into appropriate entries, tell stories about the people who created them and the cultures from which they were born. Such a connection between food and history makes cooking, and eating, even more satisfying. Here you will find authentic recipes for such classics as ratatouille, gazpacho, and tabbouleh, as well as recipes for less familiar, but no less delicious, dishes including Artichoke Hearts in Citrus Sauce and Golden Breadcrumbs, Fried Eggplant with Yogurt, etouffee of White Beans, Carrot Frittata, and more. Comprehensive and eminently accessible, Mediterranean Vegetables is for anyone who wants to read about, grow, cook with, and eat vegetables. It is, quite simply, a must-have reference and cookbook.

They Wore No Medals On December 6, 1921, Americans were still deluding themselves that we could stay out of the war. The bombing of Pearl Harbor brought hopelessness and despair, especially along the Pacific Coast. Many feared that the Japs would bomb the coast. After the battles of Coral Sea and Midway, the Americans took hearts. The book is partly historical, so the progress of the war, particularly in the Pacific, dictates the plot. The characters are fictitious, but their adventures are based on real happenings. The heroine, Marie Dumont, has many girlfriends. One of them has a husband who came home from the war with one leg, and refused a prosthetic device. Another girl's husband was disfigured, and a third girl learned that her husband was left sterile because he'd had malaria so many times. The main thing on people's minds was the safety of loved ones. Other problems were food rationing, gas rationing, and other shortages. They planted Victory gardens, carpooled, and rode bikes. Many women went to work in aircraft plants and other plants, in "Rosie the Riveter" type jobs. Despite everything, romance blossomed. Marie loved a handsome young actor, but learned he was AWOL from the army and sold black market products. She turned to another man. Lynne's father was born in Poland and changed his name to Benson since coming to America. His brother disappeared when Hilter's troops overran Poland. Benson's young son enlisted in the army and was killed, fighting with Eisenhower's men in Normandy. Toward the end of the war, Marie marries and has a baby girl, Leann, then a baby boy, Lyle.

It's not everyone's idea of a honeymoon - a 12000 mile flight from Scotland to Australia in a single engine, canvas covered plane. Even less idyllic if the pilot has only 44 hours flying experience and the navigator learned her job via a do-it-yourself course. But George and Kathy Wright from Glasgow did it - eventually. It took four months of trepidation and resourcefulness, fear and frustration, and delight and innocent blundering through the formalities of four continents. Refuelling in mid-air... landing at secret military airfields... trailed by police... the plane looted... caught up in the sensitivities of politics... marital tensions. Kathy Wright who, in 1968 was 24, kept a frank and meticulous diary. It is an absorbing, amusing and exciting story of the epic journey across the world of two young and very naive people.

The 2012 edition of Mediterra takes the mobilising potential of the Mediterranean Diet as a basis and proposes a multidimensional itinerary involving sociodemographics, health, ecology, enterprise, geo-economics and citizens' initiative.Consumers in the countries of the Mediterranean Basin have progressively changed their dietary practices as they have gradually become caught up in the dynamics of urbanisation and the globalisation of agricultural trade. They are adhering less and less to the Mediterranean Diet, despite the fact that it is the basis of their identity and one of the major assets of the region. Pressures on natural resources and the emergence of new private actors are compounding the complexity of diet-related issues.Already the subject of widespread sociocultural and scientific debate and research, the Mediterranean Diet merits reconsideration from the political point of view given the growing awareness of the strategic dimension of agriculture and the crucial role played by food production in the stability and development of societies. This diet, whose health-promoting virtues are widely recognised and which UNESCO has now listed as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, is now raising questions in the fields of environmental responsibility and political action to promote greater regional cooperation. This report has been produced under the direction of the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), which is an intergovernmental organisation for training, research and cooperation in the fields of agriculture, food and sustainable rural development in the Mediterranean region.
