In the autumn of her life, Landis harvests the stories of her seventy years. Here are stories of friendship and forgiveness, heritage and hospitality, generosity and gratitude, loss and love, and the people of a lifetime with whom she has broken bread. The memoir is a series of key words arranged alphabetically to construct a dictionary of her life. She coins the work "Kitchenary" to link the significance of food, its flavors and aromas, to memory. Because food evokes strong emotions, it recalls people and places to mind. When Landis tastes the smoky tartness of hot bacon dressing it conjures up a picture of her mother gathering the early spring shoots of dandelion along the farm fencerows to make a green salad. Food is the theme that binds the essays together. Realizing how our need and enjoyment of food remain constant, even though many aspects of family life change, she uses this medium as the connecting point across generations. Fifty-seven recipes are included, all from the kitchens of Landis, her family and friends.

It is in the everyday and the mundane tasks of life that we become who we arein the split-second decisions, in the moments we prove what we stand for, how we treat others, and the values we hold no matter the circumstances. It is in the shared experiences with those who have walked life in front of us that we learn the values and traits that define our actions. Character, by definition, is the attribute that makes up or distinguishes an individual. Often it is difficult to describe yet instantly becomes recognizable in ones attitude, feelings, actions, responses, and behavior. Character is a choice, and those who daily choose it display integrity, trust, loyalty, dependability, and leadership. The author identifies seven character traits, or life values, that have been passed down through four generations and are currently being taught to the fifthtraits learned through hard times and positive experiences of the author and his ancestors. Through his stories of life growing up in Montana to the day-to-day experiences in his career, raising children, and his relationship between his own son and grandson, the reader sees years of inner character in action. Character is measured by what one does when no one is watching. It is an outward expression of a persons inner values. These traits are not inherited or inborn; they are accepted, learned, practiced, and in time, become habit. Inner character traits are those qualities that make a person distinctive and help to shape families, friends, and societies. When our days on earth are done, the most important gift we leave to those coming after is our legacy. Will yours be a life of character?

This volume pays tribute to Luisa Passerini, whose scholarship has had a major impact on feminist and other scholars around the world. First known internationally for developing new conceptual approaches to oral history and memory studies based on the recognition of the subjective nature of memory, Passerini has more recently written about autobiography, the history of emotions and concepts of belonging in Europe, and reimagining a more inclusive Europe. In this book, scholars from North America, South America and Europe engage Passerini’s groundbreaking insights into the nature of subjectivity, intersubjectivity, autobiography, and love in relation to the themes of borders, emotions, and memory. The contributions deal with topics including Mennonite refugee women's food memories; the testimonies of far-left Chilean women who survived brutal sexualized violence; and memories of the war between East and West Pakistan, and India and Pakistan. Other contributions to the volume situate and reflect on Passerini’s career-encompassing scholarship. Passerini speaks with the editors of her latest work on oral and visual memories of human movement, and also offers a thoughtful response to the essays, whose authors represent a transnational and multi-generational group of scholars. This book was originally published as a special issue of Women’s History Review.
